  1. I understand the poster is a friend of the family but really it's impossible to know what really happened without having witnessed it. I'm not saying that what she's saying is incorrect, but it's really hard to judge this sort of incident from second hand information.
  2. No one said that the child shouldn't have been able to go to the salon. Everyone agrees the kids should feel safe, which is why everyone is emphasising the fact that she should NEVER have been put near a strange dog who was eating. Are you saying that it would not be your responsibility to keep your child safe, nor your problem, if you let your child near a strange dog who was eating, and it attacked her? That the dog was eating a bone really shouldn't make a difference. Dogs can resource guard inanimate objects, any scrap of food they can get their paws on etc. I know kids who have been bitten by a dog resource guarding a bowl of kibble. What the dog was eating is not important. The dog was eating, it should have been confined and that little girl should not have been anywhere near it. She could have done something as simple as look the dog in the eye to have set it off. She was obviously close enough to the dog for it to grab her quickly without warning (or without warning that the owners or parents could recognise). I don't think the parents are solely to blame but I do think any parent should be responsible for their children when they are around strange dogs.
  3. Do you use the same system for training, the same conditions you would have at a trial? It took me ages to get Daisy to a point where she would switch on to the level of drive I wanted every time we trained, even with food in my hand I would go back to basics and do baby steps, like another poster suggested (forget who it was, sorry). Get her focus, release her to her food reward. Get her focus, take a few steps, release her etc. Mix it up so you are releasing her to the food before her focus has a chance to wane. Although I'm sure you probably do lots of stuff like that already ;) If I take Daisy out for training and can't get her to focus and switch into drive after giving the ready to work command then I run away with her reward and the game is over.
  4. Another noob here so stop me if I'm making a bad suggestion ;) Do you ever put the food down and then release her to it? That way when you're trialling it will be no different to a training session, you just put the food down in front of the dog before you go in the ring and then release her to it when you're finished. And, she won't lose drive at the start peg if you don't have food on you. My dogs are fed in the morning and I take Daisy out to train when I get home from work at night, I feed her dinner after training not before. We won't be trialling till early next year but I will fast her before each trial. I love having an energizer beagle
  5. OOOOO Steve's going to buy Camp Tailwaggers and we are all moving into the cabins for permanent training :D :D Sounds like a plan  Awww Maree, Chook is such a good dog though!! He was brilliant at the workshop!
  6. Oerrrrrr, now you have me all intrigued, Steve :D :D
  7. K9: Evidence was blurred due to a woo woo wooing!!!! Looks like your hand holding the leash??? Thank you for teaching me how to get the best out of her! Better hurry up and let us know when you'll be up next so I can give Daisy a dead line to work with
  8. I should add that plenty of otherwise friendly dogs can be resource guarders. Many kids have been bitten by the family dog because they hassled it when it was eating - it's important to remember that even if a dog is great around kids at other times that resource guarding is a natural instinct which is why we should never let kids approach a dog who is eating - even if the dog is known to that child and is otherwise friendly.
  9. Ignorance does not remove the responsibility the parents have to supervise their kids especially around dogs. Just because they are ignorant, does that mean it's ok for them to let their kids race up to strange dogs and get in their faces? Not unlike the example I posted about earlier where parents bought their kids over to my house and let their son unlock my back door to go out to pat Micha when he was eating - he has never been a resource guarder but it really is common sense not to allow your child around dogs when they are eating.
  10. Since when is a hairdressing salon an appropriate place for a dog to eat? It's not. But at the end of the day, the dog was in the salon, it was eating, and the parent still allowed his child to wander around and approach the dog. Does the dog being in the salon mean the parent doesn't have to remain responsible for his child, because the dog shouldn't have been there in the first place?
  11. Oh no! Here I was thinking that I was just a trialling noob who had no idea where to find stuff Fingers crossed the dates are released soon! I hate waiting for things *stamps feet* Actually this reminds me I should probably join the CCCQ
  12. Why would a parent let their small child approach a dog who is eating? Both the owner and the parent are in the wrong in this situation IMO. That doesn't mean that it was ok that the parent let their child approach a strange dog when it was eating. Just because some people think the dog should not have been there does not make it ok for the parents to be lax when it comes to allowing their kids to approach dogs they don't know ESPECIALLY ones who are eating. I agree with Ash - both the parent and the salon owner are in the wrong here. This accident was entirely preventable and now that poor little girl and the dog will have to pay the price for peoples sheer irresponsibility and stupidity ETA: We had people with two small children over to our house a while ago. My dogs are not resource guarders in any way shape or form and anyone could take food off them if they needed to. However, I gave them both a bone and put Daisy away in her crate and locked Micha on the back deck so they could eat in peace, where no one could disturb them. One of the kids snuck inside our house (we were all out in the yard), unlocked our back door, walked on to the back deck and over to Micha who was eating his bone. The parents actually WATCHED him doing it and said and did NOTHING. As soon as I saw the kid out there I ran inside and bought him back in, explaining to him and his parents that you never approach a dog who is eating. They didn't get the big deal because Mish is such a friendly dog Even though Micha is great with kids and fine with people near him when he's eating, no parent should be so relaxed about letting their kid approach a dog when it's eating.
  13. Hey guys Just wondering how I can find a list of what trials are coming up next year? I had a look on the CCCQ website and the only one I can find is the pdf for 2009. I am a total noob when it comes to this stuff so if someone could point me in the right direction I would really appreciate it TIA
  14. Here's there website: http://www.metrodogclub.com/ Not sure if they are running puppy school through December though
  15. Hey, I see you down there Steve!! Shouldn't you still be working hard at CT??? Love the pics Ren!
  16. Can't wait to see them Ren! I didn't even take my camera out
  17. LOL MrsD just ask Spotty or Miss Monster who had to sit next to her all day
  18. Ah yes Maree was telling me about the DwD trial tomorrow! Whereabouts is it, MrsD? He looked great at the workshop
  19. Sorry, but do you think that any dog wouldn't touch that if they found it? Jarrah would have them quicker than you could say Jack Robinson so I guess he must be evil too . (so would Whisper or Jonty , hang on, I think you are right - they are all evil ) I know I know, but she was just so quick dammit! It was zipped into the pocket that's on top of her crate and she had it unzipped and eaten in no time at all - I found the empty packet in her crate Lucky she's got a gut of steel
  20. Oh yeah - the doggy dancing was fantastic! I don't know how you guys do it, it's so complex!
  21. For those of you who have been saying Daisy's not evil... I had a packet of chocolate freckles zipped in the back of her crate and I forgot to take them out... guess who just unzipped the compartment and ate the ENTIRE packet??
  22. I'm sure Fly will be right, Daisy didn't start training with Steve's program until she was two and she's three now (we'll get there eventually ).
  23. CM Nala is so gorgeous, I just wanted to squish her the whole time she was sitting next to me
  24. I think I really only spoke to 2 people from DOL (Seita & Huski cos they are the only 2 I recognised), it's really hard cos you look like a right d*ck going around to everyone saying "Are you a DOLer?", most people must look at you & think "Are you one of the crazies?" . ETA - Ohh & of course BC4Me is from DOL, but she doesnt count cos she's crazy and a DOLer :D ETAA - it's easier too when you have an easily recognisable dog ie Daisy being a Beagle & Jarah being a kelpie, also when you are made to get up in front of everyone & do something (Daisy's demo & our dancing routines ). It was nice to finally meet you MrsD!!! Thanks Erin :D No I didn't hear a peep out of her the whole way back! Typical! She and I were both exhausted when we got home Me too If she could be half as a good as Ella I'd be chuffed :D And Steve with the poodle PLEASE tell me someone who has photographic evidence will post it soon :D
