Yes, it's how they suck you in. And then you find out they are evil ;)

Awww, when I was in this morning I heard a little dog barking and I asked the vet if that was Boo the Cav and she said "What? Boo, no way, he's the most perfect dog you can imagine!" ;) And then she raved about Boo and how good he was and how cavs were all kinds of awesome Daisy only had a little bit of stuff that needed to be expressed, not much at all but enough to create that awful stench The vet said her poos were firm and she's on a great diet so there's no reason as to why she should be having anal gland problems. So fingers crossed this is just a once off and won't be a regular occurrence The vet did offer to teach me how to do it myself if it ever happens again so let's hope that it doesn't

LOL, my mum has had a blocked nose and thought I was exaggerated the problem stench - until tonight when her nose cleared up and she got a whiff of the smell :p

Will he be in until tomorrow? I thought he was going home today I will say hi to Boo when I go in, I'm in first thing tomorrow morning :D When do you pick him up?

I don't ever encourage mouthing or biting on my hands, but I would encourage it on a toy.

I thought they were only banned in Vic?

I would recommend consulting a professional first - at least then, they can assess what training and if necessary, what tool is best for your dog. If that happens to be a prong collar then they can show you how to fit it and use it properly. They can also explain how the collar works and will prescribe a training program to go with the use of the collar. Where are you located, maybe we can recommend a trainer for you?

Ok, I've booked Daisy into the local vet tomorrow morning (couldn't get in today). Hopefully my vet will email me back between now and then, if not, hopefully it's a simple thing to solve and it's nothing serious.

LOL no she's not too small at 17kg I don't often have her on my lap as she generally isn't allowed up on the lounge, but I've been home more in the last week so I have been a bit lazy. I just sent an email to my holistic vet who did the dogs yearly check up only about a month ago. Hopefully she'll reply soon, although I think I might just take her to the local vet to be on the safe side.

I try to stop her eating them as I'm paranoid about her getting a blockage, but there are so many of them, even when I think I've raked them all up she still finds them ;) I find most of them in her crate so I don't think she normally eats them but I have seen them in her poo occasionally. I just had a good look at her anus area and it looks a bit damp but not obviously fluidy. Although I've never had this problem with the dogs before so I'm not quite sure what is normal and what isn't I noticed the smell yesterday when she was sitting on my lap and jumped off the lounge, and again today when she was sitting with me. It's definitely more than gas as I could still smell a bit of it on my pants

Since yesterday I've noticed an absolutely foul off smell emanating from Daisy's bum - she's never had this problem before but it's FOUL. I'm assuming it's an anal gland problem?? She's not licking her bum area or scooting. In fact I don't think I've ever seen her do either. She's fed on a raw diet. The only symptom is the foul stench. Is it best to take her off to the vet now? I'm really worried about it becoming a regular problem. I caught her eating a seed from our cocus palm tree recently, and I found one in her poo Could this be causing the problem?

I agree with Miranda. Is there any way you can leave him outside or give him access to outside when you aren't home?

Erny, I think this is the thread you were looking for: http://www.dolforums.com.au/index.php?show...c=43795&hl=

Daisy is a terrible barker, she loves the sound of her own voice, my advice is to enjoy the peace and quiet!! That beagle bay can be ear piercing. By 9-12 months beags are about as tall as they will get, after that they may fill out a little.

Check Chain Or Halti?

Ah sorry, I didn't realise how easily it can happen with prongs -
Puppymum - maybe you're thinking about a martingale or limited slip collar? I agree with others who said try training her to walk on flat collar. Lots of beagle owners walk their dogs on harnesses but I find it does nothing to stop pulling and I found it was easier to train her to walk nicely on flat collar/martingale first. If you were still keen on progressing to a harnesses, I'd wait until she walks nicely on a collar first.

Has Your Dog Ever Choked On A Raw Bone?
huski replied to puppymum's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
I feed raw bones every day and I've never had my dogs choke - but my dogs chew their food -
I'd just give him the whole frame too. I've fed raw chicken bones for years not once had a problem.

Check Chain Or Halti?

Thanks for that Rommimum, I've never seen or heard of them before. I see people walking dogs on head collars quite a lot and they've always just had the leash connected to the head collar. Maybe the head collars should come with these or at least with instructions on using them along with the HC! -
Check Chain Or Halti?

Ah ok, gotcha now I guess head collars make me uneasy after my experience with Micha. It's terrifying to have them get loose like that all of a sudden! I'd be reluctant to have one on a big strong dog for the reasons I mentioned anyway - would hate for the big strong dog to get loose. Maybe the design of the halti has changed since I used it, but I prefer to stick to something I know is fool (and husky) proof! -
Check Chain Or Halti?

That's funny as one of the reasons I will never recommend or use haltis is because I don't think they are very safe at all... not just because of the neck/spine damage that can occur but from when I've used one on Micha. He could slip out of the head collar and backed out of it multiple times, I also had the clasp come apart twice when we were walking - and he was instantly lose along the street. If it was a matter of safety I'd rather have something on the dog I knew it couldn't get out of like a check chain/prong/martingale. -

We're on the 'same page' PF. I didn't know you were no longer a member. I'm no longer a member either - the APDT here refused to permit me to renew my membership because I publicly campaigned for a change in the law to permit (with restriction) use of the PPCollar in training. At least I am honest and upfront about it. That's amazing. What a backwards and hypocritical organisation. -
Awww, glad to hear it went well! The pic of Bailey with the husky pup is very cute I teach the 'give' command when I play tug of war with the pup/dog. I move the toy around and let the pup capture it, then tug with her for a few seconds. Then I pull the toy toward me and hold it still so it goes "dead". I calmly and slowly say 'give' while holding the toy still, most pups will release it when it goes still. Once they release it I reward by making the toy come alive again and moving it around so the pup can grab it again, as well as praising the pup for giving.

Check Chain Or Halti?

What do you do when you change direction? I used the change of direction technique with my two and it helped a lot. Make sure you aren't holding the leash too taut, so it's nice and loose, and the instant she pulls and the leash tightens turn quickly on your heel in a 180 degree turn, so she has to hurry to catch up to you. I reinforced the right behaviour with treats, so when the dog caught up to me and was walking on a loose leash beside me I'd say 'yes' and would give them a treat. I would also reinforce them if they stayed walking on a loose leash after a while by saying 'yes' and giving them a treat and verbal praise. You might not get far the first few walking sessions but if you're patient and consistent it works well. Some people train it with a clicker instead of saying yes. I know you feel like an idiot, but if you are consistent with your timing and rewards you should see results - although you might find it helpful to consult a trainer for a one on one session or two so they can show you where you might be going wrong? -
What are Pointers like to train? Are they fairly biddable or can they be stubborn?
