  1. Oh, thanks for the heads up Tilly. I will check it out before I buy some :p
  2. Dreamy is definitely a broken beagle, Gills luvdogs: IMO you need to be more careful and precise when you are raising a pup on a raw diet than simlpy feeding table scraps and RMBs. Dogs need the right balance of bone, meat, offal, vegies etc.
  3. If you're worried to start off you can buy pre made BARF patties to try them on and see how they go - I've used the Dr Billinghurst ones. I do it myself now, but am looking at changing Cherry over to them if she keeps going well on her elimination diet as they make a roo based BARF which is what she's eating at the moment (roo). It's not as hard as you think, but the BARF patties are a good place to start if you want to try them on it to see how they go
  4. Ruth, I don't have any suggestions for you, I just wanted to say I'm sorry you had to come home to such an awful sight I hope you can figure out a solution that works for all of you.
  5. Erny - Troy banned Midol a few weeks ago. AFAIK it wasn't for one specific post.
  6. Can they? How disappointing . The last thing dogs need are more correctional tools available in supermarkets where there is guaranteed absolutely no possibility of any hints/tips/advice on their use. Not that they necessarily would or could get that from the Vet clinics and Pet Stores where they were previously commonly purchased, but at least there was an underlying chance. I agree Erny, IMO no correctional tool be it head collar or check chain should be sold in the supermarket - just MHO though
  7. Suzanne Clothier has an article on her website called 'The Problem with Head Collars' that I think gives a good perspective on them, you will have to join up to read it but it's worth it (and it's free): http://flyingdogpress.com/content/view/54/97/
  8. Besides that, I don't think Midol will send his DVDs to Germany.
  9. Ok - what kind of obedience do you want to do? Would you like to work towards trialling with you pup? Are there behaviouial problems you want to work on?
  10. Me too! Until I actually read it and it said 'man stopper' training!
  11. I second Kavik's question. What do you want to get out of the training? What is your goal? ETA: Looking at the link in your OP, are you trying to train your dog for attack work?
  12. Why on earth would you wear WHITE pants to dog training?? That's just asking for trouble!!!
  13. That's the point Beagles are supposed to hold their tails high and erect, as well as have at least the tip white, so that they can be easily spotted from a distance away when on a hunt Daisy rarely carries her tail down, it's always up and full of business
  14. Could she be more prey/toy driven than food driven? The first night I had Daisy at obedience club as a pup she couldn't care less about the food I had (dried liver) - the other dogs were WAY too exciting! It was a case of us going from training at home, which was a relatively low distraction environment, and then going straight to a very high distraction environment at obedience club - naturally it was going to be hard to get Daisy to focus at a place like training club when we'd only ever trained at home. She'd gone from practically no distractions to 100! Having said that, I train with high value treats and only ever use them for training - things like boiled or roast chicken, boiled steak, left over roast, sausage or kabana, cheese etc. Anything soft and smelly is usually a good place to start!
  15. Welcome to DOL! What a gorgeous puppy I agree with other posters in regards to not taking puppies to dog parks - I don't even take my two year old beagle to dog parks, I've had far too many bad experiences. If you are keen to go to a dog park I would hold off until your pup is through her critical development period and is closer to 12 months old - a bad experience in their critical period can mean behaviourial problems for life. I'd have a read of K9 Force's Puppy Development Calendar that's pinned at the top of the puppy forum here - it will give you a good idea of what to expect. I would look for a good puppy pre school and then I would enroll in an obedience club. Controlled socialisation is the key, another reason I would stay away from dog parks with pups as they tend to be a free for all and you have no idea on the temperament of the dogs you are socialising your pup with. As PPS suggested, beagles are generally happy, confident little pups - when my beag was a pup we took her out and about from day one (sensibly of course as she wasn't fully vaccinated) - she met lots of people and had a variety of POSITIVE experiences - socialisation is more than just meeting other dogs, it is giving the pup a variety of new experiences and assigning them a value. I would also be inclined to do a search on the forum for crate training and consider getting a crate - my beagle loves her crate and they can be handy when it comes to toilet training. Beagles can be a handful as they are stubborn and quite strong willed but they are very food driven and tend to learn things quite quickly, if you use food as motivator I started training my pup from the day we bought her home at eight weeks and we're now training to compete for our obedience title - as long as you give them boundaries and a clear set of rules to follow you will be on the right track! If you like, I also suggest having a read of this article about the NILIF training principle - it's how I raised my beagle: http://k9deb.com/nilif.htm I also started Daisy on the Triangle of Temptation from when she was a pup, it works well for beagles as they are generally very food driven http://www.dolforums.com.au/index.php?showtopic=64101
  16. Let us know how you get on Belinda, Jane is lovely and very experienced when it comes to dealing with aggression. I'm positive she will be able to help you
  17. Got a quick question for all of you I'm just about to buy the dogs some heart worm tablets. I am looking at getting the Interceptor Spectrum tablets. Previously they have been given the yearly heartworm shot but I'm not keen to continue it. I noticed this particular brand has tablets that are for 11-22kg, Daisy is 17kg and Micha is 27kg. Can I be cheap and lazy and buy the same sized packet for both of them? Or does Micha really need the tablet that is 5kg more in his weight range?
  18. I will have to have a look for her mobile number when I get home but her email address is [email protected]
  19. Try this on the wrong dog and you'll be on the receiving end of a very serious bite. What works on a dog of one temperament doesn't automatically work on another. A serious resource guarder would be provoked by such actions. I'd never ever behave in a way that deliberatley provoked a dog to to bite me. Ever. Hi poodlefan What is your method for a biter? Belinda I agree with the sentiments that this is really a case that needs a professional to assess the dog and then decide on the most appropriate course of action for dealing with his behaviour. Scruffing him is obviously not working for you atm, I doubt adding in a poke will either - corrections may work in this situation, they may not, what you need is an experienced trainer who is able to show you the method that is most appropriate for you and the dog.
  20. Try this on the wrong dog and you'll be on the receiving end of a very serious bite. What works on a dog of one temperament doesn't automatically work on another. A serious resource guarder would be provoked by such actions. I'd never ever behave in a way that deliberatley provoked a dog to to bite me. Ever. I agree. Some dogs wouldn't tolerate being poked and having their food continually taken away from them, in some cases the resource guarding could very well escalate when the dog decides to take you up on the challenge and tell you it's had enough.
  21. Thanks I think she's pretty cute too Do you mean a trampoline bed? We have one of those too for outside and the dogs love it
  22. Apparently sweet potato makes a huge difference, Cherry just scoffed up the same roo mince she turned her nose up at this morning once it was mixed with SP
  23. Daisy's doesn't sleep in her crate over night (she usually sleeps on one of our beds!) but she goes in it all the time and it's really useful to have a crate trained dog. She loves having her own place to go when she wants her own space or to escape, she eats her dinner in her crate and spends a lot of time in there of her own choosing. In fact she got a new crate tonight, as her old crate was too big and I wanted to give it to Micha. I was wondering how she would 'transition' to the new crate but she was scratching at the door trying to get in as I was setting it up! She went in it instantly and is in it right now As you can see, she loves the new crate and has only had it for about an hour She'd be lost without it.
  24. ohh yeah! the cats LOVE roo meat!! even my fussy girl who wont eat any other raw meat (only whiskers cans ) will eat roo! It's bizarre I chopped up some of the roo pieces I had to give to Cherry, she turned her nose up at them, so Shandi pushed her out of the way and gobbled it down. Then Cherry came over to her and looked like she was thinking 'why are you eating out of my bowl?' and Shandi did a cat growl at her ;) Shandi scoffed the roo mince this morning too, when she saw me take it out of the fridge she ran over and did her demanding 'rawrrrrrrrrrr' meow and followed me around rawrrr'ing until I gave her some
  25. That must be it Adele, because Cherry is hardly eating any of it at all. I will mix in some sweet potato tonight and hopefully she will start eating again. She's barely eaten since the day before yesterday when I ran out of sweet potato/roo mince mixture. Oddly enough, my cat is obsessed with roo mince!! She's normally a bit picky about raw meat but omg - she PUSHED Cherry out of the way yesterday to eat the pieces of roo I cut up for her (before I got more roo mince). It's hillarious. I gave her some mince this morning and she scoffed it She even growled at the dogs when they walked past her when she was eating it
