  1. "Has hip displasia" is a very vague diagnosis - what is the score? Many dogs "have hip displasia" but have such a low score it's irrelevant. As already mentioned the pup is to young to have been scored officially except by pennhip so first thing is how has the diagnosis been made and second thing is talk to the breeder. What were the parents scores? Grandparents? EFS
  2. All my pups (and adult rehomes) are sold on the very clear understanding that I will always take the dog back. The fact that 6 years we moved across the ditch would make this difficult admittedly, but I have had one person from NZ contact me about their dog needing to be rehomed and I contacted a long-term breeder friend still in NZ and the problem was solved, so there are always ways. Prior to moving I had taken two dogs back, one I sold again and gave the previous owner the proceeds (not much less than they had paid). The other will haunt me forever - and I would have paid ten times what I did to get him out of the situation he was in, even though he ended up getting his wings. I made them, they're mine forever.
  3. Clear or white-ish mucus discharge is normal - green is rarely good. Is she peeing more than usual? Does she seem itchy around her vulva? Is she spayed? Not an emergency situation, but I would keep an eye on it and suggest a vet check if it continues for more than a week or gets heavier. Could be just a little localised infection in the vagina which usually fixes itself in a healthy pup but if she's peeing a lot it's more likely to be a UTI which is more serious and will almost certainly need a vet visit.
  4. How much pain is that poor dog in....
  5. People like this drive me crazy. But of course we all know Labs are born trained - they're guide dogs you know (every one of them lol)
  6. Black Hawk made my dogs flabby and soft, but as perse says the best food for any dog .... I prefer mostly raw but I have never had a problem with using "low end" food like Bonnie - all ours are currently on Bonnie Working and doing great, but they get raw too. For a brief time ours were on Nutro and I would go back to that if I won the lottery.
  7. Wouldn't surprise me, except they were both from Victoria, which probably explains a fair bit :-)
  8. With two pups you really don't need to think or worry about weaning until the pups are getting on for four weeks old. Yes, mum will spend more time away from the pups, this is perfectly normal. She needs to have the option of being near the pups but not in the box, so fix her up somewhere comfy. Our bitches aren't walked until the pups are at least 9 or 10 weeks old. She shouldn't be out on the streets, running the risk of bringing random infections back to the pups (not necessarily anything as bad as Parvo) Wean on to protein IMO, highest quality human-grade mince you can find, I start with beef. No cereal until they're fully used to meat. One meal the size of a marble first day, two meals the same size the next day, then see how they go. IMO variety is essential from as soon as they are coping with solid food.
  9. Must be the day for crazies - someone just offered me a box full of remote control cars for a puppy. ARGHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!
  10. Sounds exceptionally scary - except that dogs don't sweat? Hope he's recovering well.
  11. Fair point, but a pure bred Fox Terrier is a very distinctive animal!
  12. Just been offered 2 bottles of Johnnie Walker and $300 for a puppy. Anyone else had some "interesting" conversations with crazies potential puppy owners
  13. Success has little to do with it surely - if the dog doesn't thrive in a pack situation what is best for the dog is more important to me than how much it won/could win/might win. Funny "foxie cross" being the real deal
  14. White dogs of any breed or cross can be deaf, it's not a bull breed thing. Very simply put, the specialised hairs inside the ears which vibrate to transmit sound don't work as they should if they're white. If all of them are white then the dog is probably going to be deaf. If the dog has no pigment on the outside of it's ears it's more likely to have no pigment inside it's ears. This can be actual coloured hair or skin pigment, it doesn't appear to make a lot of difference which. Yes dogs with coloured external ears can be deaf but it is less likely. The fact that this is not a white-to-white mating makes it very unlikely the pups will be deaf, but OP does need to be aware of the possibility. I have just been through this with a pup from a brindle sire and a pied dam, he is white with a brindle eye patch. For several days when he was about 5 weeks old we were wondering if he was deaf, but he's not.
  15. People have died separating their own dogs during a fight - an unknown dog - can't say I blame OP for not getting involved. Sorry you lost your dog in such horrible circumstances. I would make sure the council fine the owners and I would certainly be taking them to the small claims court or whatever it is called in your state for vet fees at the least.
  16. Glad she only had a few - hope all went to plan with the birth. Hare lip without a cleft palate is very common, certainly not unusual. I wouldn't raise her but that's your choice. Weighing regularly will be important if you decide to persevere with her.
  17. Just be careful about her digging if she has milk and or a discharge - bacteria from soil can do horrible things.
  18. Four years. Incredible. My thoughts are with you and those that are waiting for you.
  19. Pale to mid yellow I've always thought. Darker urine indicates dehydration but certain illnesses also darken the urine so there's no way I'd suggest you diagnose one thing or another from the colour She may have gone all night without a drink, so woke up thristy, had a big drink and then needed a pee and because she hadn't drunk all night she was a little bit dehydrated which showed up in her urine. No different to us if we forget to drink while we're out and about, nothing serious just 'oops, haven't had a drink for hours!' How has she been for the rest of the morning?
  20. Bitches whelp 63 days from ovulation, not from first mating, last mating, middle mating. When using AI "more" people would also prog test and inseminate at the 'right' time -usually immediately after ovulation - bitch whelps 63 days after ovulation so is one or two days "early" When doing a natural mating and not prog testing the bitch might be willing/interested several (or more!) days before ovulation, 63 days from first mating could be up to a week early than 63 days from ovulation, so bitch is "late".
  21. Teething probably hasn't helped, but dogs are also very clever at training their owners, it all starts by the owner only wanting the best for their pup. You feed her plenty of good food so she doesn't have the idea that she has to eat or starve. She doesn't like something very much she just picks at it because she's really not that hungry You worry she's not eating enough so you give her something tastier She learns that if she refuses to eat what she's given she'll get something better One owner successfully trained :) Personally I don't like a lot of dry food, but if this is what you want to feed her then stick to it. Serve out the amount of food you think she should have, put the food and the dog in a quiet place (laundry? crate? en suite? puppy pen?) Leave them alone for 20 minutes (10 minutes for an adult). Any food that's left after this time gets thrown away and pup gets NOTHING else until the next feed time. This includes no training treats, no bits off the bench, nothing. Repeat until the dog realises it eats when food is served or it is hungry until the next meal time. As she is teething you could soften her food just for now if it makes you feel better but IME most pups actually prefer to chew while they're teething, it seems to help ease any discomfort they are feeling. ETA: raw meat by itself is not good for dogs, it's very unbalanced nutrition, so if you are going to give her meat make sure she eats dry food too, or bones and other sources of vitamins & minerals.
  22. I don't understand... Why is it ok to desex these new puppies at 8 weeks, but it wasn't ok to desex your female dog at 8, 9 or 10 months before she had her first season? Different vet Tatelina :)
