  1. budgieW- perhaps ask you parents about this story- ask them to explain it now you are adult ;)
  2. ..and , to be a bit more graphic .. young vets-in-the-making need to FEEL with their fingers different textures and thicknesses of things- they need to SMELL odours which may be so useful , and they need to SEE organs behaving normally , what cancers look like, how a body reacts to pregnancy ....
  3. I guess the same way any vet does .. by assessing all the vital signs , and seeing that things are working as they should .Obviously no healing takes place - but there should also be no bleeding , or poor breathing - all that stuff and much more.
  4. As for students practising their skills at Vet surgeries .... would you want your dog to be the subject? Yes, they do watch, and learn ..but actual surgery, watching how the body reacts, just seeing how the inside of an alive, breathing body works- and what happens when you do X .. that learning is priceless, and I am pleased that the poor dogs/cats who otherwise would have just been needled are contributing to the health/wellbeing of all the loved/owned ones out there. The world is full of unpleasantness, folks - and some of the unpleasant things need to be done for good things to happen. There are MUCH WORSE things happening to dogs & cats & budgies all over the world.!!!
  5. What a lovely photo of your dear old man Thinking of you :D
  6. ..regarding tests... please don't forget the xrays /barium - which may pick up any foreign body .Depending on where something is lodged, there are various symptoms...not always vomiting/diarrhoea.
  7. If he is doing zoomies, etc- then I suspect he has a medical problem ..and his not eating is not all pining.... Please get all teh tests you can... and I hope the vet hospital will give him some nourishment via whatever means they can! thinking of you
  8. yes That is always a scary comment!
  9. lambo.. your pup's personality/attitude will be greatly influenced by his upbringing, and in particular the dogs he meets as a baby.Pups DO submit, it helps save their life when an adult is not happy. The temperament of his parents is, of course very important !Were they happy and confident ? Pups need to play with other pups/safe dogs, to learn the skills needed to interact with dogs/experience different dog body language and behaviours . THIS is what will help build confidence- or if it is a lot of bad experiences, this is what will do the opposite. Whether a pup has testicles or not - careful socialising is very important. I'm not sure if you want a pup who will 'stand his ground' . all the time .. sometimes that is not a polite or healthy behaviour You ideally want a dog who will RESPOND to your direction , who will RESPECT you, and dogs who it meets .Your dog should be able to interpret what the other dog is 'saying', and REACT appropriately - whether that means to submit , to walk away, to engage in play, or to be neutral. We can not tell a dog how to respond to dog body language ..but we can oversee and help control situations.
  10. The best time for humans' convenience is 5-6 mths . The best time for a growing puppy is around 12 months . I have only known vets charge by weight - so, yes, you would probably be paying a lot more for a 25/30 kg dog, as opposed to one about 1/2 that weight
  11. Raw pineapple is what I have used with success ,years ago. That, and a mostly raw diet , with lots of nice soft bone . Unfortunately, a lot of dog foods smell pretty good AFTER they have been digested raw /bone based diets don't have the same consistency/smell ..and so are not as attractive as food items (and dogs only see smelly faeces as food items ..not as 'toilet' things) (only my opinion )
  12. That's really bad vet asap ..and yes, if he is apparently physically healthy , perhaps a drip or stomach tube just to get his metabolism going again ! He needs intervention now ,I think. Is he drinking? Will he drink egg flip or home made (no onion) chicken soup ? Will he show interest in canned foodat all? Gosh - I hope the vet can help. Re: rescue remedy .. dose every 20 mins or so this evening ..drop it on his gums , preferably , and continue often tomorrow - see if it helps..
  13. ?? Do you mean as flooring? They 'could' walk on it for short periods .. but if it was permanent, then their feet may get damaged . Toes can easily get stuck /claws rip out/pads get cut...
  14. there was an explanation/photo in your first thread Trouble with fence jumping is ..that once it has happened, you can bet that whatever they find is MUCH more exciting than the same boring stuff they smell/ see every day at home ..that they do it again...and again...
  15. I am so pleased to hear you have made the decision to take away his pain. The next couple of days will be bittersweet , but you can spoil him ,and tell him you love him ..and make him as happy as you can :D Do you have any painkillers or anything which will keep him pain/itch free for a few days? Thinking of you - it will be a very hard time . The quick and confident diagnosis is because the Derm. sees skin all day everyday- he sees things which many general vets maybe will never experience- and so not know what to look for Take care ...
  16. I still think a vet visit would be the first step..however I remembered once when I was looking after very valuable shedded sheep- and one wouldn't eat! I resorted to rescue Remedy Put a few drops on his gums... then a couple minutes later, offered food .To my surprise, he ate ! I had to do this a few times a day for a couple of days .. but it worked . No appetite- RR- eat something ! Don't ask me why ...but perhaps it will help Indie?
  17. I would strongly advise a vet check . if he is lethargic and apathetic- he needs to have bloods etc done . he 'may' be fretting, but the stress of losing Bonnie may have lowered his immubity, and he may now be ill with who knows what ... Vet first- then a behaviourist, if his physical self is OK. meanwhile- perhaps cut down on the exercise? Fasting and working out are not a good combination for anyone
  18. I just went back & checked... found the description of your dog and would suggest that if she does get out and get picked up for roaming/attacking /harassing - you may have trouble with her breed I D . You also did get lots of advice in your first thread- but have not said if you tried any of it ? (or did I miss that bit:o)
  19. I hope it's GOOD fencing - underground/very high,or roofed ..and chew proof material Having them in th e house together is just not fair on either one , and difficult for you. A full male constantly exposed to bitch scent everywhere he walks is going to find being calm and ignoring his instinct very difficult.
