  1. Glad they moved, hopefully new people will be better!
  2. Oh, don't get me wrong- the dog will certainly not be rehomed. But for the moment, it's just not something I can cope with doing so she stays. I have enough christmas related stress to deal with, without giving the AR nutjobs more reason to stalk me and my family. So sad that people can judge others without being in their shoes You will do what you think is right.
  3. Greyhounds can be a little different. Mine are not allowed offleash for their own safety and the safety of others. I don't do off leash areas as my dogs have skin like tissue paper and they can be hurt, people also don't want my dogs (especially my very highly prey driven girl) running their dogs down. I would never let them off at the beach either for the same reasons and the fact that I can't run 70k's an hour to try and catch them as they are chasing a flapping plastic bag that could blow across the road. The last time Stan was 'allowed to explore new territory in his own way' we were on holidays when a friend let him out of the house on the fully fenced property for a wee and he suffered a fractured skull and smashed sinuses requiring two surgeries and months of only onlead toilet breaks in his own backyard. Hardly mentally healthy for him OR me. My greys don't need a social life they have each other, they are walked twice a day, they play in the backyard together and enjoy their favourite past time which is laying on the lounge with their legs in the air. I make the extra effort to keep them safe because of who they are and I know them better than anyone. This, Harry doesn't get let off lead (except in a yard that is fully fenced). Whitney does get let off lead whilst we are walking in an off lead area, but sticks close to us anyway. She doesn't run around a lot, except when she has been sniffing something and realises we are too far ahead of her, and then she runs to catch up again. They both have a run around in the backyard, which is big enough for zoomies if they feel like they need them, but as they are 9 (Harry) and almost 8 (Whitney) they don't run around as much as they used to.
  4. Harry had his stitches out yesterday, and was given the all clear. His red cell count is back to normal We are over the moon that he has recovered from all of this, and so thankful to our vets at North Nowra Veterinary Hospital for saving his life and being so wonderful with his aftercare (and with me!).
  5. Harry is a bit like that, he's always up for pats and cuddles. Being a greyhound, so many people talk about how their family/friends/uncle used to have greyhounds and aren't they a lovely breed! I like the fact that I can tell people that aren't familiar with them about how special they are, although sometimes I just want to get home! My Auntie in Finland has an Australian Terrier and is always stopped and asked what sort of dog he is! She tells people that she has one because her sister lives over hear, and it's a good connection between them! I've had a police car stop next to me and ask about Whitney (she is a small dane) because she looked like his one, that he was trying to rehome He asked if I wanted him, because they were having a baby. I referred him to Great Dane Rescue, and always wondered what happened to him!
  6. Last night he slept in the lounge room on his bed the whole night, didn't come into the bedroom! Also, this morning he ate breakfast, YAY! No poo for today yet, but there's still time. Rescue remedy might be a good idea, bit I Have to buy some because the only one I have here has the dropper in the dogs' mouths, don't think I want to use that one.
  7. Aaawww, thanks for checking!! Harry had a vet visit this morning for a new blood test, and his red cell count is at 36 The vet said physically he is fine, now we just need to deal with his idiosyncracies. He didn't eat until tonight, and I think that it was only because we had Chinese takeaway, and he wanted some. He enjoyed the prawn cutlet tails and prawn chips  My brother and his wife came to visit, and he met them at the door with a wagging tail, and tonight is the first night that he's spent the evening in our lounge room on his bed, instead of being in the bedroom. All in all, he is doing well, I just need to get over my paranoia that something is going to go wrong
  8. Best wishes, I hope you can find answers.
  9. Persephone - All good ideas to get him going, will try anything if he tries to stop again
  10. Hope you work it out. It's sad that our pups age so fast
  11. DH just texted me and said Harry ate some BBQ chicken "with gusto" He'd gone and bought a fresh one just for him!!!
  12. Last night Harry ate a few Arnott's wafer biscuits!! He came out of the bedroom about 10pm, lay on his bed in the lounge room, looked at DH as if to say "where's my bickie" as he does when DH is eating biscuits. DH took a small piece of biscuit, threw it to Harry who ate it. He probably ended up eating about 4 biscuits in total. Vet visit again this morning for a check up, full blood count came back good (a great relief) and his red cell count has gone up 2 points as well. All good news, now just getting him to eat regularly is the battle. He didn't want breakfast this morning. He is much more active and normal in his behaviour, he even went outside to sniff his brekkie before rejecting it, which is a huge improvement. Thanks for all you good wishes and advice, I really appreciate it
  13. Thanks! We also have a great dane, and I've always thought she (or her predecessor) would be the ones to bloat, not Harry. Please stay conscious and look out for the symptoms. The dry retching and hanging head and salivating and panting were my warning signs, even though his "belly" was soft. His stomach is further up in the rib cage, and I saw that his ribs were bulging out where they normally don't, so that's when I called the vet. Luckily it looks like surgery went really well, now just have to get him back to his silly self. Oh, I assumed it was your Dane that bloated... what breed is Harry? Thanks for that information. Hope I never need to use it. Lots of healing thoughts to Harry. Harry is a greyhound we adopted when he was 18 months old, he's now 9 years old. Thanks, I'll try the chicken broth and rice and the ice cream, they may work. He is a princess though :D Today he turned his nose up at warm porridge, fish fingers, hot dogs, gravy and peanut buttered toast, all usually guaranteed to get him eating He is drinking well.
  14. Thanks! We also have a great dane, and I've always thought she (or her predecessor) would be the ones to bloat, not Harry. Please stay conscious and look out for the symptoms. 15. Thanks for the hugs, they DO make me feel better :) He loves BBQ chicken, fish fingers, hot dogs, etc, etc but just turns his head away from the food. This morning he sniffed the fish fingers that had BBQ scrapings from the hotplate on them, licked them and left them. At least he sniffed and licked, so hopefully will soon start wanting to eat them. I just want my clown back
  16. Poor Harry had to go back to the vet yesterday, and then again this morning! He had a bad night on Monday night, in pain and distressed, and not wanting to stand, but settled again by morning. I called the vet about 4am and she said to give him more pain meds, which seemed to work. He doesn't get up to toilet, so we need to get him up and walk out with a lead so he'll go, and he collapsed when he was coming back in. His gums are very pale, and his red blood cell count had gone from 32 to 28 yesterday, and he won't eat anything. Yesterday the vet gave us some tablets to stimulate his appetite, so far haven't worked. We took him back again this morning for another blood test this morning and red blood cell count is now at 26. A full blood count is now being done, although the vet said she in not overly worried, but wants to see if there are any underlying issues. About midnight last night Harry seemed to turn a corner. He all of a sudden relaxed, stopped panting, curled up into his cat position, sighed and slept!!! I have never been happier to hear a dog snore At the vet's this morning he was much more alert, and was sniffing up on the desk!! When we got him home he sniffed food, licked it, but didn't eat yet, but at least half interested. Now fingers crossed pain is managed well enough (won't eat so has to have Zymadol which makes him high, so trying half dose), he poos and blood count comes back good, then I will be happy!
  17. Yep, did that  ETA: I've never quoted within the quote before!
  18. He's home!!! He hadn't pooed at the vet's, but as soon as he got out of the car at home, he did! He's now lying in his favourite spot, on the floor next to my bed. Tried to get him onto his own soft bed, but he didn't want to know. He's very quiet and keeps dozing off, so hopefully he'll sleep a bit and help the healing. They did stitch his stomach whilst they operated, so at least it shouldn't twist again. Thank you everyone, you've been so supportive to a stranger and her dog, this really is a great community.
  19. Thanks again, all. I am on tenterhooks until that 48 hours is up (about 2am tomorrow) and then I think I'll start to feel a bit more confident. The vets have been wonderful, and explained everything so well. It's sort of a bad thing that I have read so much about bloat since having great danes, so I know all the bad stuff! I am being more hopeful with each call from the vet. The one that was on today called about 6.30 and told me he is still going well. He's not eaten, but they know that Harry is not food driven, so feels that he will eat once he gets home. I rang my boss and told him what had happened and that I will need to go home when he is discharged, hopefully about lunchtime, and he was do good about it. He said that if I needed to get him in the morning and not come in at all it's ok. I have the best bosses in the world. They are doggie people and understand how important ours are to us. I am grateful for so many things, and am humbled by everyone's thoughts! Thank you from the bottom of my heart
  20. I visited Harry this morning and he is on the improve. He is looking good, but very tired. Hopefully he will come home tomorrow, as long as his bowels start moving and he is keeping food down. Thanks to all for your concern. Jaana
  21. I've spoken to the vet again, and he is improving. He's on painkillers and seems to be coping okay, even being a bit more alert. He's had another pee walk as well. She said she would call if anything changes. I'll go and see him in the morning and find out when he can come home. Thanks for all the we wishes and support, I now know how much this all means when something like this happens
