It's about 6 months old, but yes, still new :p I stopped and got some carpet cleaner on the way home and cleaned it off strait away. I'd already sponged it off. The sheet/towel/blanket that's been touched is now soaking in the washing machine ;) I didn't realise that they could just leak whilst asleep. That's really gross. OH and I felt really sorry for Sally because she's more of the dignified dog, looks embarassed when she does a poo in public and doesn't like people looking. Poor girl for some k y and a finger up the bum. She looked horrified (as I would if I had a finger up MY bum!). Poor Leia (who's had previous anal gland problems) was sitting in the corner with her bum firmly planted on the ground! The vet advised us that we should start giving them some metamucil(sp?) twice a week to help them. Their stools have always been of normal consistancy, so I'm concerned the fibre will make them constipated! If you give your dog metamucil, how do you do it? I was thinking of mixing some up and putting it in ice cubes because the girls like eating ice. Any other ideas?

Just wondering what would cause a dogs anal glands to empty while they are asleep? Sally and I were having a nap on the lounge this afternoon and she got up to go outside and woke me up. I stretched out and felt something wet. Looked down and there were two patches of that horrible horrible smelling liquid on the lounge. It was right about where her bum was, so I knew it was something to do with her bum? We are off to the vets in 10 minutes, but I'm just wondering what would make her anal glands express like that? I'm pretty sure it was her that had vomited this morning. Not sure if those two things are connected. Her bum looks like it's still leaking a little bit. As gross as this is, I've tried to clean her bum up a little bit (whilst holding my nose) and she was starting to squat like she needed to go to the toilet. Maybe she's constipated? I have no idea... Any ideas would be great. Worry wort me is off to the vet with her. I'm taking the sheet that was on the lounge with me so the vet can see what it was (lucky him!).

Thanks Laffi. I got a bit worried and rang the vet. As you've just said, Sentinel is a monthly wormer and we'll continue with that until their vaccination on the 17th February and we'll talk about alternatives then. For some reason I just had this thought in my head that we weren't meant to be worming them every 3 months after 12 months of age! Silly me.
-
Oh. We've been worming every month till 12 months of age. Hrm, might ring the vet

I've searched and can't find anything. For some reason I had a thought the other day, do you stop worming monthly once your puppies are over 12 months old? We use the sentinel spectrum for both girl beagles and I'm wondering whether we need to stop giving them monthly worming now and if there is another option? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I know how you feel jillybean. My sister asked me the other day how I go about going to work... I just go with white hairs on me. Nothing I can do about it! Ok, well maybe we could not allow them on the lounge where we sit, but pfft. I was thinking of trying the furminator because my friend got one and she said they are excellent. Might try the rubber mit too!

Just wondering why breeders get their bitches desexed during ceasarians? Is it because they can't go on to whelp another litter after a ceasar? Or they have had a few litters and this was their last? Or are their many reasons as to why? I understand it's easier to do the desexing whilst under the anaesthetic for the ceasar, but just wonder why breeders do it. Just curious after Kaffy's thread about her bullmastiff.

Maybe ring up the vets in your local area and ask them if they know of any current parvo outbreaks. I know I rang my vet a few weeks ago to ask about human parvo virus and they informed me that there was an outbreak in Brisbane at the moment.

Oh my, another DOL puppy gone before their time. So sorry to hear for your loss, I'm sitting here with tears streaming down my face. I hope that time will heal your empty heart
-
I don't normally read these posts as I sit here with tears streaming down my face only feeling a smidgeon of the pain you are feeling. So sorry to hear about Max and I hope your pain eases soon. I couldn't help but smile at that gorgeous face in the photos you posted. Run free Max and enjoy chasing your possums over rainbow bridge.

Hehe, that's gorgeous. Looks like Ralph just licks Rocco's slobber!

Youch, that looks horrible Poor Boris. I hope he's feeling better soon and recovers fully! -
Very sorry for your loss, another young life taken Run free little girl and play in the fields on the other side of rainbow bridge with Oakley.

OMG, I'm.. I'm in shock. I, like many others on DOL, have watched Oakley grow through the photos you've posted of his puppyhood. From a gorgeous little puppy, to a dashing young boy. How devistating for you and your family. Thinking of you all at this sad time. RIP Oakley, you were a gorgeous boy who didn't deserve to have his life cut short.

I've just taken her outside and she walked out. I think that woke her up a bit because she came back in and started playing a little bit with Sally. Now they've both walked outside. It's been raining all night in Brisbane non stop (wooho), but the girls don't like getting their feet wet (doh!).

LOL norti kitty! The vet commented to say that they shouldn't be given cooked bones, I said they aren't, it was a raw bone. She's slept all night on the lounge all night after peeing in their bed. Sally was cracking a narna at 1am this morning and I got up to see what was wrong. She couldn't find anywhere cumfy to sleep because their bed was wet and Leia had stolen the other bed. I let them in onto the lounge where they could both fit and go to sleep (so I could go to sleep). She's wagged her tail this morning when I got up and said good morning, but she's still snoozing on the lounge. I'm actually starting to wonder if that bone had been there a while because she's been a bit funny with eating things (like she's got tender teeth) for a few weeks now. She only started the mouthing and pawing Tuesday night, so I'm wondering if the bone was pushed into her gum which made it hurt. She's just moved from the lounge to the blanket on the floor :S
-
She's still out to it? The vet said that he expects her to be fine in an hour, but she's still sound asleep on the lounge and when we've tried to stand her up, she looses her footing..
-
Well, after having to be sedated (poor thing is frightened of the vet), we got to open her mouth right up and there was the culprit! A chicken bone stuck length ways on her bottom rear right gum. It was about an inch long and left her gum bleeding, so it was imbedded very well! OH kept telling me I was stupid to be taking her to the vet, but I just had a feeling something was wrong. Showed him, mummy knows best right? ;) She's now sleeping off her tranquiliser and there's no dinner tonight. Vet suggested to stop giving them the chicken bones, but I'm not sure. I think she just had to be really un lucky for it to have gone over the top of her teeth/gum to sit parallel to her gum. We'll see.

Well it's lunch time and she's still doing it. I would have thought if it was an ant bite or something, the irritation would have subsided now? So, we are off to the vets this afternoon at 5:30.
-
She's still kinda doing it this morning, not as bad as last night tough. I might see how she is before I go to work and then again at lunch and decide then.
-
I wouldn't say the saliva is sticky... and she's not all frothy or anything. Still doesn't look swolen or anything. I'm worried to go to bed incase it was a toad
-
I just had a feel through the top of her mouth and I couldn't feel anything. She's moved away from me now and is still doing the chewing mothing, but not as much as she was before. If she's still doing it in the morning, I'll take her to the vet.
-
I thought of a toad because we have a lot around here, but normally they just bark at them and not attack them. It's only the right side of her mouth, so I don't think it is that because otherwise she would be irritated on both sides. She's getting annoyed with us touching her mouth now, so I'll try and have a look at the roof of her mouth. Thanks Echo.
-
Leia has just come inside making chewing motions with her mouth. There's nothing in her mouth and she's pawing at it like she's trying to remove something and she's scratching. OH and I have both tried to have a look in her mouth and there doesn't seem to be anything obvious.. We can't see her tongue properly because she keeps withdrawing it into her mouth. I've started to feed her ice, to try and numb or help any pain she's got in her mouth. I'm wondering whether she might have been bitten by an ant or something outside? She's had her chicken bone tonight, but we can't see any bones or anything stuck in her mouth. Doesn't seem to be swelling either. Does this just sound like she's been stung by something and it's irritated? Should I keep feeding her ice?

We buy our sentinel spectrum and advantage through priceless pets and they've always been great!
