  1. :D RIP Charm So sorry for your loss BB to you & your family!
  2. Its sad to hear others have also witnessed instructors do this kind of thing or have had it happen to their dog.
  3. One of the instructors that does this is deputy President others are on the committee, very clicky group & I know of at least one instructor at the club that is a DOL member I will report this to the president as I believe she wouldnt ever handle a dog like this. My attempt to find a new club was when the instructor slapped Ruger,it was the first & only time we went there, so I went back to the original club as it doesnt happen all the time & I figured they all might be like this. Also seems to be only big dogs they do this to, never medium or small ones, as Ive trained Asia for years & havent had anything like this happen with her. They do insist I check her alot though but Ive made it clear to them we will not train like that as Asia will just plant her feet & refuse to move. Their advice on that was just to give up obedience altogether I do believe its the club holding us back as Asia easily got her CCD title & I know she could go further without the boring repetitive training & in the right club. I will definately be going to another club to have a look as there are a few other clubs fairly local to me
  4. It happened tonight with a young German Shepherd bitch, she took off running around having fun & when she was caught she copped it, grabbed by the scruff lifted up & NO screamed at her A few of the instructors in the higher grades do it & everyone seems to accept it. They club is so clicky I know nothing would be done about it if I put in a complaint.
  5. WTF is wrong with some instructors at obedience clubs...... Just because a dog does a runner during recalls does not mean its ok for the instructor to lift the dog up by the scruff of the neck sometimes off the ground while shaking it & screaming NO in its face I have seen this done quite a few times now. I have also attended another club where the instructor deceided to do food refusal, a new exercise for us. While my dog was sitting nicely on my left hand side the instructor waved food around in front of his face & as my dog stretched his neck out to sniff the food he copped a huge slap in the face which was heard by the whole class. The instructor then laughed, then said he shouldnt have done that to a Rotty. Years ago I also had another instructor "check" my 55kg Rotty so hard that he was off the ground. His check chain broke then some how rejoined so it was so tight my dog was gasping for breath. No one could get the chain off so someone had to race home to get bolt cutters while my boy could have died. Ruger could have been a great obedience dog but due to some instructors he was too nervous to let a judge approach him for stand for exam & would shy away every time ;) I have been a member of obedience clubs for 19 years & cant believe this happens & not just at the one club No one but me seems to think this is wrong and are shocked to see it. Who is there to report it to when the clubs are so clicky??
  6. Thanks for another great meet Adelaide people! Heres some of my photos from today.....
  7. Despite socialisation a Shar pei still needs to be watched carefully with other dogs?? WRONG!!! No more than other breeds. If you socialise & train from day 1 they are fine, you dont have to be a lot firmer with a Shar pei than a lot of other breeds. Not true at all they might not start a fight but wont back down from a confrontation. Both my Shar pei are not fighters & will back down if a dog has a go at them. We have had Shar pei come to every dol meet from all different type of homes. Maybe I missed something but the Shar pei are far from being the breeds who have to be watched carefully, not once have I seen any issues with them & other dogs when they are all off lead! Im sure a lot end up in pounds due to people impulse buying a cute little rolly puppy, then they grow into a dog that is not so cute, lack of training & socialisation, BYB breeders still believing they are are rare breed & can make lots of money, owners lack of knowledge or not prepared for the skin, eye etc problems that arise that can be an ongoing cost. I dont believe its the breed at all ,just uneducated owners! A Shar pei can suit many different homes from apartments to farms, families with young kids, singles to the elderly! Sorry I wont go on as what do I know! Do the research meet the Breed & Im sure you will see that all you hear about them is not correct.
  8. I have met quite a few people who own a Shar pei as their first dog, if you are keen on the breed, have done you research & are prepared to put in the time to socialise alot & attend obedience classes, I cant see why not? They are a beautiful loving breed in my experience I have no idea why they seem to be made out as extra dominant & nasty dogs that are extra hard work. Yes some of the rescue dogs need a lot of work due to owners not putting in the work when they are young & being firm from day 1 ,but Ive had plenty who are just beautifully behaved & so good. My Shar pei are not overly dominant, very dog friendly & sit, behave & accept strangers patting them when we are out & about Very true about the hair though Its everywhere! GayleK Why kind of home do you think is suitable for a Shar pei???
  9. Any chance I can please have the details Ness? I rang a lady whos contact details were in the SACA journal not long ago to ask about herding. We ended up chatting about the Shar pei history of being a herding breed & how to have Shar pei recognised to compete but I completely forgot to get any details of anyone who gives private lessons
  10. Hi Gemma Good to see you here Maylee was a very good girl at the last meet & had a ball running with the other dogs, cant wait to see her again. Yes the meet is at Eastwood & I should be there a bit before 12 to set up the temp fencing. Bet Earl has grown heaps KHM, how much weight has he put on since his last meet?
  11. I will try & come for a while,I have a few rescue dogs at home so dont want to leave them for too long!
  12. Tali has asked if she can post an update on Marnie as her 1st birthday is in Feb. She is at her dads until Sunday so will be back then! Marnie is going great, she is beautifully behaved girl & they have done so well with her being their first dog
  13. Stella is booked in for Thursday to see an eye specialist Ill be back with an update after her appointment ;)
  14. Thanks for the replies Stellas does have dry eye in both eyes,so it wouldnt be good to remove both her eyes they are really clear since using the drops & dont seem to bother her at all. I will try the Viscotears & the tea to see how she goes & also pass on all this info to her new owners. One possible home has an older boxer with a dry eye & another works full time with wildlife, koalas, so Im sure they both know what they are in for & would be committed to putting drops in her eyes for the rest of her life
  15. My current foster dog a Shar pei has "dry eye" her Schirmer test result was 8mm which is not good. Her vision is not 100% but is good enough to lead a perfectly normal life! She does have drops(artificial tears) at least once daily in her eyes sometimes 3 times a day & is such a good girl. She will stay perfectly still for both eye drops as she knows she gets a treat after :p We met with a potential new family for her today, who are very willing to do her eyes everyday & they would be perfect for her Im just after anyones experience with this condition to pass on info to any potential new owners I did find info after googling "dry eye" on liquid capsules for this condition that can be added to food once a day? has anyone tried these? Info on dry eye! http://www.darwinvets.com/dogs/kcs.htm
