  1. Some certainly do value them, and are doing great work with cultural preservation of Salukis, Falcons, Goats, Gazelle and all sorts of heritage animals. Unfortunately like everywhere you also get people doing the wrong thing, and some of it is very unpleasant.
  2. That one he made a while back? Yep - got it on DVD here somewhere, think we bought a copy at the NSW Spec when he judged a match there after the Speciality a couple of years ago. Got a nice glass UAE saluki centre paperweight for Mr Jadir's Inter in Match. I boggled at the prices quoted in this latest one for puppies tho', assume that is USD he is quoting in....
  3. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-middle-east-10832444 Interesting video, might take a little while to load.
  4. No pix?? No, no pix. They have a dignified reputation to uphold, and no-one needs to see a Saluki bitch sandwiched between an Afghan dog and a Saluki dog. I checked the calendar and have my explanation, she's never been backwards in coming forwards when it comes to the dogs...
  5. I don't mind a one off but it if happens more than once I intervene mostly because I don't like it. Why don't you like the idea? For me it's because it's often fairly rude behaviour in dog terms as well as human terms. The thing is, I will intervene even if the humpee doesn't appear to mind. So it may not be completely rational on my part, probably there's a fair whack of WASP uptightness as well. Love the hold information at the vet that says "does your pet embarrass with inappropriate behaviour? We can help" - took me ages to work out what that meant!!!
  6. Just curious, we don't have a problem humper but we had a three hump chain just before which got me thinking Do you permit your dogs to hump each other? If not, why not? If so, are there any circumstances (outside risk of mating) where you wouldn't allow it? I'm assuming for the purposes of this mini survey that polite DOLers don't let their dogs hump strange dogs or people.
  7. Our Afghans love the water and the mud, I think they have themselves confused with gundogs. Our Salukis dislike it, particularly the smooth. Go figure. There must be some Universal Law that dictates that the longer and more high maintenance the coat, the more the dog likes to get filthy....
  8. - did you report the attack to the ranger? The person walking the dog has been calling to offer to help with the bills (almost $3k to date) but they also say they are unemployed, so I don't know whether to insist they help with bills? I'm more concerned with making sure the dog is never off the lead again. This person seems to think the dog was just playing but my husband (and Sid's injuries) tell a different story. Yes report. From what you say it seems unlikely that they will come through with the cash and I'm afraid anyone who says "just playing" about those injuries is in denial and trying to minimise what has occurred. This is really hard, but Sid is unlikely to be the last dog that gets attacked unless the owners really have to face up to the consequences. - did your puppy become timid and /or aggressive after the attack? Our Afghan was attacked while out walking and also ended up surgery, a drain etc. He has very good temperament, but someone commented to me at the time that he may now "get in first" if he's in a situation with a rude/aggressive dog. That has been true to a minor extent, he is more wary and reactive around dogs that resemble the breed mix that attacked him. Afghans are not Frenchies so I can't even begin to guess how your boy might react, but the attack will have an impact. How big the impact is and its effect on the rest of his life is up to you. Remember tho' not to "overdo" it - an experienced trainer friend once said to me that apart from appropriately planned introductions to dogs again, the rest is a matter of benign "neglect". Ie, just try to treat him confidently and normally as you always have. - How do you go about re introducing the puppy to dogs? And how can I ever let Sid off the leash to play at a dog park again? Or should I just never let him play at a dog park again? Cosmolo's advice is good. With our boy we picked one nice, laid back, incredibly well tempered slightly flirty bitch for his first free-run with dogs after the accident. He had a ball. We did NOT do it at a dog park, reintroductions to dogs have to be controlled by people who understand what they are seeing and are able to intervene if things are heading south before it gets into a fight situation. Dog parks are a terrible idea for this reason, and worse for puppies. There are just too many idiots with dogs at most dog parks. I second the advice to join an obedience club, there your dog will learn life skills that will give him and you confidence and you can free run him on their grounds. - Do I ever let him see the staffy that was his regular playmate but who turned on him once the mastiff started attacking? I wouldn't. EFS
  9. I chuck something interesting in the bottom of it, a stinky piece of garlic sausage or tuna or roo treat or something - often bits of leftovers from our dinner (not the roo treat bit). Usually our guys empty their kongs - it's rare for them not to. One thing I found, Kongs are really a "I'm bored, might as well try this" kind of thing. Ours never used to play with them when we were around but if we're out at work all day they usually decide to winkle that last bit out.
  10. Pfft. Howie has two supermodel girlfriends and got to do a little "wrestling" with one in the sunshine on her mat. What else could a whippet want for?

  14. Thanks for the information Julie. I agree with your comments about street address to and I use a PO Box for all my mail. I'm happy to meet anyone anywhere else and talk dogs, but until I've "vetted" someone as being the real deal they don't get an invite to our home. A number of DOLers have been to my home tho', so they know it's not a puppy farm/squalid/whatever, ie, it's not a matter of having anything to hide, it's a matter of security. I am sure breeders of breeds that are commonly BYB and breeders of dogs using for pigging and fighting mixes would have even greater concerns.
  15. Hmm. We're in an election period. Say the RSPCA gets agreement for its policy platform from its members. The next step would be to get their policies enshrined in law somehow? How would they do this? At the state or federal level?
  16. I think paying attention and applauding the oldies is a matter of respect and good manners/sportsmanship - whether or not you get a tear in your eye
  17. Other Secretaries may have a different view, but from my perspective it is easier for the steward to call three times than it is for me to muck around changing the paperwork/contacting the cataloguer to change it. So don't worry about it being a matter of courtesy. I'd say the same thing with my steward hat on.
  18. Definitely not after. They will still cash your cheque. Before entries close can be a little different but it still inconveniences the Secretary especially if it's because someone has sprayed entries to 3 different clubs and then tries to cancel 2 entries once they find out where the competition is going. If the Secretary feels that you fall into that category they're not obliged to return the entry in the ACT. Don't know about other jurisdictions. However, if something serious happens I'll return the entries. An obvious example, I refunded once after closing because the dog had died. The person actually hadn't asked for a refund, she had asked that I not put his name in the catalogue as she would find it upsetting - she had other dogs entered to show. Happy to help out in that situation (and yes I knew it was true, and not just a line). In short, I personally wouldn't ask. If I enter and don't go and am out by 21 bucks I can live with it.
  19. We'll be there with your favourite Womble Afghan puppy.
  20. Have you thoroughly checked ears? They can bleed a lot if nicked just a little bit.
  21. Try posting in the rescue thread. And sorry to hear about your boy, heart disease is tough.
  22. I think I've heard more than one trainer say that if your neighbours don't think you're crazy then you're not training your dog correctly. I don't even care about busted, I'll roll out "who's the cleverest? Yes it's you, it's you sweetie, you're the cleverest, the best dog in the world!" no matter who is listening.

  24. Without taking away from the great work people do at shelters and pounds, they are not nice places to be. If it is almost certain a dog will be put down I think it is kinder not to put him through 24-48 hours of fear and separation from his family before he is put down. That goes double if the dog has already been through rehomes a third or fourth time.
