  1. Can these be done at 5 months?(sorry, I have never done either, so don't know) with a pup showing behaviours as described, perhaps doing this , where other dogs are would not be a good thing at present ... Basic work in both agility and flyball is about getting the dog to focus and move to and with the handler which can be started at 6mths (so the pup would be old enough by the time clubs started back in feb). I would expect that there would be experienced working dog handlers that would be able to encourage je33ie to go and see someone for help but also encourage her to work with Zulu just be motivational. I have seen other rescue Kelpies begining dog sports in the same way and have also seen them improve quickly once the dog focused on the handler. I acutally had a Kelpie (my first dog and not a rescue) that was barking and lunging and was told by someone that I shouldnt take her to obedience. So I took her to flyball and she is now a champ and has flyball titles. She wasnt aggressive, she just didnt care that I was on the other end of the lead. It wasnt until I saw a professional (in this case a trainer) and I worked through the focus issues with her that she stopped doing it. We actually had a rescue Kelpie recently at out FLyball club with a similar story (barking, lunging) and I have to say within a few weeks of focus work the improvement was amazing! They didnt work next to the rest of us training but on a long line a about 50 meters away and slowly moved toward the rest of the group doing the same exercise until she was actually doing her exercises with dogs around her.
  2. I think proffessional help as well- idealy with someone who has worked with Kelpies!! It sounds like you have a focus problem (common in rescue kelpies because they have not been taught to focus on a human for direction and they can be very independant). They have been bred to herd and so the movement of other dogs or any stimulation is causeing that instinct to kick in and she is getting frustrated so barking/lunging. It may/may not be fear aggression (without more details) so I suggest seeing someone soon and nipping it in the bud early on because they are smart dogs and will learn the wrong thing quite easily (which I found out the hard way) and it is probably something easy to fix at this point!! Until you get proffessional advice I would be trying to get her to watch you and channeling that frustration into other exercises such as sit/drop. Another focus game I play with my kelpies is 'follow me'- I have heaps of treats and it just involves walking/jogging and changing directions and getting them to follow/keep up with you. Bascially you are thier sheep and you feed them for following you- this will get the focus on you as being 'fun' and everything else as being boring! Also some Kelpies just dont play well with other breeds. It took 2 yrs for one of my Kelpies to understand how other dogs play and often young Kelpies are very rude and get into other dogs faces so perhaps instead of trying to get her to play with other dogs get her focused on playing with you when other dogs are around. Perhaps look at something like flat work agility training of begining flyball training (again ground work) to burn off some energy. It is more about mental stimulation with a Kelpie to tire them out and a tired Kelpie the best kind to have!!
  3. I cant wait for this. I have ordered my new lens- 50mm f1.4 (of course) so I am hoping with this and the challenge I will be able to get motivated again! I cant wait for it to arrive!
  4. It was also amazing how she drank- Mel doesnt Lap water: she puts her head in up to her eyes and slurps it down! She really is a scuba dog!!
  5. Double post but I still LOVE IT!!!
  6. I take it you didnt like the response? Why ask the question. As indicated photos allow the breeder to asses the situation. When you paid 'alot of money' you were not only paying for the pup but the years of experience and research the breeder has done in the breed. Perhaps just let the breeder know that you feel uncomfortable sending pics- just remember for a lot of breeders their pups are just as important to them as they are to you. It also allows them to asses the entire litter for thier breeding plans- did one pup turn out the way they envisioned or were all pups of a similar type/style. ETA- if you are planing on showing your pup pics will allow the breeder to identify faults and give feedback on how your pup is growing out.
  7. I always step off on my left foot regardless of having a dog (In my brain it is 'stay right foot' the left is default!). Particularly when crossing a road!!
  8. Are you getting the 1.4 or 1.8? Let me know what you think coz I have my money ready- I just need to get organised and buy it- I am thinking the 1.4 as it is birthday money that I need to spend (And I cant think of anything better to spend in on coz I am not allowed to spend it on the dogs LOL)
  9. Oh Abby is blushing- well not really more like sitting there going "yep I know I am amazing- everyone look at me NOW" followed by "Ball? what ball? wherzaball? no the B-A-L-L. What- are you stupid or somthing throw the dam ball NOW!"
  10. So Nik told be about the "101 things to do with a box" clicker game. In my second session with Abby she new EXACTLY what was going on and was sitting watching me and doing a massive backhand swipe at the box- which ended up about 2m away from me. Thus she decided the quickest way to get a treat was to run back and jump on the box. I was quite pleased considering she had no idea prior to this about leaving me for food! Distance work here we come!! Pics of the poor box Yep there is even the word fragile on the box!! Abby clearly doesnt understand THAT word!! Safire on the other hand (on the right) would much prefer to have photos taken than work with a crappy box!! OK next step- getting her to do anything but 'shake' the box.......
  11. Cardboard!! Great for throwing, leuring and at the end of the day if they are hungry they will settle down and have a snack!! Grose after it gets soggy though! Rockmellon sends abby off the deep end though!

  16. Well since one of my dogs has already made it onto the thread I may as well put the others up too!! ( I think you can do it!) Bluey: Go to Steve at K9 force and work out what I am doing wrong... Stand for exam (a big one since he wants to eat ppl atm) AFDCH (also big as he wants to eat the box loader NB doesnt want to kill them, just nibble LOL) Get him out of the bottom class at obedience (which you cant do until they do the stand for exam Safire: Get focus and confidence at agility Milky: HT Abby: FDX Get her to Nik enough so that they can do obedience

  18. I am going to ask for books on dog training for christmas and wondered which you would recomend (for a blonde :D )! I have just started clicker training with my pup and do dogsports with kelpies so anything relating to these areas would be helpful! Thanks
  19. Could you ring a 24hr Vet and talk to them. At least then if you do decide to go tonight they will be prepared. I would also look at geting the x-rays done by someone experienced and get them read professionally. It is commonly misdiagnosed!
  20. What do you mean by Agility/flyball not being an indication of temperament- do you mean in their ability to work stock or their temperament in general?
