I did it many years ago and survived No I haven't been to the new venue - but I believe its a much easier ride that the old one which used to involve big pothills and lots of water. The obedience test at the end is nothing to worry about.

I have entered Scoota in open and UD both days. We are flying over the Thursday before the trial and I am coming with Deb and her Aussie Brooklyn. Now if anybody finds my missing sits in the meantime - please let me know....... :D

Scent Detection, Targetting Etc
Ptolomy replied to Snuffle's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
http://www.dogscouts1.com/Dog_Activ-_Scent_Discrim.html Great scent games! I have taught my last 4 obedience dogs scent discrimination using this method and it is brilliant. -
There is also Perth Training and also Cloverdale.

I still think the sit stay is a dumb exercise (especially when you are sitting on 97/100 or 199/200) Our brag from today is Sexy Lexi won novice agility and this was her title. She also came second in strategic pairs - but what was special is that Lexi's partner is a 500 height dog and Lexi jumps 400 and is only knee high to a grasshopper - she also had no bars down Yee Har. Not to be outdone Beans and her toller partner Jaffa got a pass in excellent strategic pairs AND To top it all off the toller boys Alex and Scoota showed all the BC's how to do it and won Masters Strategic Pairs. Have to laugh as Alex is feral and Scoota is semi retired - but they didn't put a foot wrong. YEE HAR!

Do you have access to a pool as swimming would help. I would like a $1 for all the lame agility dogs trialling. Unfortunately lameness is uaully harder to pick when they are running compared to walking. I have seen a judge in WA ask a dog to leave the ring because they were lame.

I use Vetwest Canning Vale - the last lot I had done were earlier this year - I did Parvo and Distemper and it cost me $88

Teaching Hand Touch When Stay Signal Is The Same
Ptolomy replied to 4 Paws's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
Are hand touches worth teaching - they sure are - you can take them into the ring with you and use between exercises. What can you use instead of a hand signal for stays - I tend to use a pointed finger -
Teaching Hand Touch When Stay Signal Is The Same
Ptolomy replied to 4 Paws's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
Yes I have problems. I taught hand touches using both hands and I give my stand signal with my left hand above the dogs head - so the problem I have is that the dog tends to want to jump up and touch in the process of standing. Actually have to say it is only affecting one out of 5 so I guess he is either the smart one or the dumb one of the group - still trying to work that one out. -
Crabbing - argh I hate it when my kids do it......... Where is your food - it can be caused by having food in your right hand or right pocket. Are you standing up straight with your left elbow tucked in when heeling? Is your dog actually in heel position or are they now too far forward? Is your dog sore (this is why mine crabs and since having his back looked at - he doesn't do it now)

Hormonal Issues With A Spayed Bitch?
Ptolomy replied to baileyb's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
It took my bitch 12 months after spaying before the "attacks" stopped and we haven't had one now for over 12 months TOUCH WOOD! -
Hmm - it might be the one the dermatologist mentioned last time we saw her - the one she was talking about was a steroid though.

Sorry - being on the other side of Oz - I can't help with where to train but from previous experience if you are really interested in trialling it would be well worth the money forking out for a private lesson with a positive trainer once every 4-6 weeks, especially if you have little previous experience. The right person would be able to give you plenty of training ideas to continue on with and would be able to set you up for what you need for the higher classes early on, and would also be able to pick you up on mistakes prior to them becoming ingrained You could then use the club training for distraction training and to proof what you had learnt.

I kept a diary and the same thing happened each season. For a couple of weeks before she came into season we would have vague episodes where simple things that she knew well fell in a heap - you know like "come" Once she came into season she would be back on track - although there were 3 days when I guess she was ready for mating, that she would be a little less switched on. Then 9 weeks after being in season we would get a week or two of the lethargics. Funny enough, this usually coincided with the Royal Show. Argh the joys of trying to trial an entire girl........

Yes - bigtime allergies to fleas, dust mites and a truck load of other things. For 8 months of the year (Sept - April) we are on a 1/4 Capstar every day - which is doing the trick.

Hand Signals For Obedience Trials?
Ptolomy replied to squeak's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jgZTFW9Y0Fs Scoota UD - should include signals. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YXYyyl7otIA Blaize open obedience will include change of position at the end and heel free is the first exercise. -
End Behaviour For A-frame
Ptolomy replied to DeltaCharlie's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
I use 2o2o for 4 of my kids. Lexi who is now 2, is height challenged (41cm) and is being trained by somebody else, is doing running contacts. Most of the new kids on the block - who are all hanging around in novice waiting for the Nationals (we have something in WA called not for competition - where the dogs can compete in any class under trial conditions but they are not in the competition) are using either 2o 2o or the 4 on the floor. Have to say this crop of youngsters, there are probably 4 or 5 of them, are awesome because they are still in novice yet they probably have 12-15 runs under their belts. -
Some advice ......make sure you buy more than one because you are forever losing them  I have just purchased 12 from Clean Run - think they worked out $1.15 each + postage

Do a search on the net for Kong Recipes - there are a truck load of sites and suggestions.

I'm going to the obedience Nationals...... and the Agility ones next time in WA!
