  1. I think you are a very caring and responsible owner and seeing as you have caring parents who will look after the dog......then I would say you should go. Its not as if its forever...its only for a couple of years and don't forget you can always come home for a visit during holiday times.
  2. As disgusting as it is to us.....its a normal behaviour in dogs. I agree with Sandra777, in some dogs its a learned habit from watching other dogs do it..then it becomes a habit and with some its the type of food they eat. Some foods are so strong in smell...when the dog poops it still smells like food..so they eat it.
  3. My beautiful Aussie 'Bobbie' would wag his entire body when he wagged. It would start from the tip of his nose and continue in a "wave" action right through his body down to his bum....so we gave him the nickname "Wobbily Bobbily" I lost my darling Bob three days ago ...aged 13 1/2
  4. Lovely story and lovely photo.........but then he is a SHEPHERD !
  5. I didn't see it but I have read some very detailed stuff in the past on what the koreans do to dogs before they kill and eat them and its nothing short of disgusting cruelty. Its no wonder they have a reputation for being one of the cruelest peoples in the world.
  6. julzjc, stay positive ! Hugs to you and your two babies. You have got on to it quickly so I am sure they will pull through.
  7. When judges, surveyors or other breed enthusiasts refer to 'correct type' , they are referring to conformation/structure .
  8. Sounds like it could be a Chondro dwarfism pup?
  9. TrinaJ, you're right ....Goats milk is an excellent milk and much easier to digest than cows milk.
  10. Maybe in another week or so then........just get your butcher to mince them finely. They need the bone as that's where the nutrients are. If you would like to know more on better feeding then check out any of Ian Billinghursts books......particularly "Grow your Pups With Bones".
  11. Check the bitches teats everyday to make sure they are supple. Any slight hardness or heat...get the pups to suckle from that teat to help bring it back to supple. If you are worried at all......ring your vet for his her advise. The more you are weaning the pups the less you feed the bitch. This, along with the fact she will want to be with them less and less will help dry her milk up.
  12. Remblak, Don't feed them weetbix and milk.......as there is no nutritional value in it. Why people insist on feeding their dogs that rubbish I don't know (not meaning you here as everyone who gets a dog seems to feed it weetbix and milk *sigh*) There are some great puppy porridges (not milk) out on the market today. I used to use Mera Dog's meaty puppy porridge but that is no longer available . I also fed them raw minced chicken necks. Even Farex (from chemist) ..mixed with a little minced chicken necks or minced lamb is far better for them than weetbix or any other adult human breakfast foods.
  13. I've seen it before and I loved it...its very clever. IMO its one happy dog and dog and handler have a very special bond.
  14. I think we all might be jumping the gun here ...and we should wait until after that ANKC meeting ??? The item in question was already on the ANKC's agenda for discussion for the October meeting prior to all the fuss and Hugh Gents subsequent letters assuring us the item is dead and buried. So maybe they just have to "go through the actions" , raise the item at that meeting so it can be rescinded ???
  15. My doG there are some evil disgusting human filth in the world today. I agree with PF, take the dog to the Vet for a complete check up. At least the dog is alive and 'seems'(?) unhurt ........as anything could have been done to the poor dog. Haylz ....this is the sort of story the needs bringing to the attention of someone like Neil Mitchell on 3aw...or Derryn Hinch (3aw). I hope your friend and her dog recovers from this terrible ordeal.
  16. What I find most frustrating with the GSD's are people claiming breed standard compliance of dogs that are not work tested (Schutzund titled) Couldn't agree more SpecTraining (and please don't dig up old arguments over it) but there is not a lot we can do about it . A helluva lot has been done in the past to try and have the situation changed but to no avail....and now that the DPI are involved here in Vic......I very much doubt it will EVER change........well not for Schutzhund anyway...but there is a very small light of hope in another sport being looked at. (?)
  17. EXCELLENT EXCELLENT Post Shadow Walker and I very much agree with you !
  18. I understand what you are saying RKD and I think most breeders can 'see'...but others turn a blind eye or are in denial. Some judges do the wrong thing to by putting up these animals at times. In the end though , like everything else, it will all settle down and improve ...those dogs falling by the wayside . It all comes down to the ethics, morals and ideals that I hope ALL breeders would have, however, don't. I agree ! It happens in all breeds of dogs, cats and other animals.........where the unscrupulous breeders don't care other than the money to be made. Sorry to read that about your bitch too. How did she do that in a crate?
  19. Frankston Obedience Dog Club is an excellent club with great people and facilities! i can highly recommend it !
  20. RKD92, "I think (not entirely sure) what the breeders call the roach back is "type" maybe." Not true. Roach is a fault as is the over angulations in the hind legs that we occasionally see in some of the dogs today....which gives them that horrible cow hocked action as if they don't know where to place their feet when walking. Now please note...I said "some" and NOT "all" for those who like to read "all" into everything.
  21. Ohhh my doG Kateshep ,didn't take you long did it?........5 years on and you have learned nothing. Obviously all those magz I sent you were a waste of time. Like EVERY breed out there today be it Mals, Kelpies, Borders, Labs, Goldens, Malts, poodles ,cattle dogs , Aussies, Boxers etc etc etc ......there are a small percentage who do not conform to the standard in some way ,shape or form ...whatever that may be........and GSDs are no different. It just annoys me when people take that SMALL percentage of dogs and then refer to those problems as being "the entire breed". Isn't this topic supposed to be on LOW PREY DRIVE????????????????????????
  22. Tapua, I think the easiest way to find a trainer with experience in training guide dogs is to ring Guide Dogs Australia direct or get in touch with someone like Michael Tucker ..ex guide dog trainer who has, now and again , also trained guide dogs privately. He would be someone who could point you in the right direction . Michael Tucker 03 9439 7577 . Email: [email protected] Michael Tucker has been a dog trainer for over 50 years. His career started as a hobby. It led to training police dogs in the Royal Air Force, then 20 years training guide dogs for the blind in the U.K. and Australia,
  23. It's a little more than that here. People are saying that one of the techniques being promoted is too potentially dangerous to recommend without direct knowledge of the dog and handler involved. OK as an emergency control measure in a crisis maybe, but grossly irresponsible to recommend as a training technique sight unseen. They are saying the advice could get the handler or the dog seriously hurt. And that is more than a disagreement over technique, that's a disagreement over duty of care and personal responsibility. The other theme I read in this thread is that GSDs are different to other breeds, that dominance and sharpness are desirable characteristics in a good GSD, and therefore only experienced GSD trainers can handle what the breed 'experts' on here see as typical GSD adolescent aggression. The message is that aggression is so common and so stereotypical in GSDs that ways to manage it can be reliably prescribed over the internet, by GSD trainers only and again sight unseen, and they need to be very forceful methods indeed. I don't buy that last argument, but it's the most convincing damn argument for restrictions on the ownership of a particular breed I have heard for a long time, given that it comes from people claiming decades of breed experience. I'm saddened that a breed community that has been through that once isn't more careful in how it presents itself. That 'theme' is absolute garbage and those who believe such garbage, especially those who have Shepherds, should be ashamed of themselves. Tin pot experts they are...nothing more nothing less .
  24. SecretKai, Thanks for that. I have had a very sad day and your post has brightened me up!
