  1. There is published information about the risks of juvenile desexing. There is evidence to show that it may be detrimental to the growth patterns of young dogs due to the influence of hormones on developing bones. Dogs desexed as juveniles in some breeds grew taller and finer in appearance than their sexually mature littermates. I also recall reading somewhere only recently that early desexing has an influence on bone density, possibly leading to a higher risk of fractures in later life. I agree Ellz and I have read quite a bit of info on the subject too. There is no way I would desex puppies that young due to all the problems it can create..including five times more likely to suffer certain cancers later on in life. IMO those who do have "babies" desexed are a disgrace and should get out of dogs ! Apart from the known evidence against early desexing......what sort of breeder(person) would see their six, eight or ten week old baby puppies butchered ?
  2. What a fantastic idea !!! I will definitely be sending a package across. Thanks for posting this Mackenzie 11. Do you mind if I crosspost this to another dog forum? The more who know the merrier I say !
  3. I would love to have an entire house of non slip slate floors !
  4. Oh geez that's scarey! Might be best not to walk at the same time everyday. Mix it up when and where you go. At least you were able to give a description and number plate to the police.
  5. Ohhhh poor frog I think most people love frogs....I know I do . In the area where I am we used to have thousands of frogs croaking all night long. It sounded wonderful. Then the council decided to put in roads and footpaths everywhere and in doing so ,killed off all the frogs. At night now it is dead silent for miles. So much for caring and thinking about the environment hey
  6. They look like fly maggots to me. ( fresh "live" meat for the dawgies)
  7. Good on you toofarnorth, the more you do with him to occupy that mind of his the better......but you need to also satisfy the "gun dog" within him if you can. Why don't you ring the gun dog club within your State and ask them if there are any gundog retrieving "games" you can do with him to help satisfy that need in him.
  8. A couple of years ago I was given a sample of Phuds to try and I was quite impressed with the ingredients and the dogs seemed to love it.....so I ordered a large box. What I got was nothing like the sample I was given. At least 90% (if not more) of the ingredients was nothing but husks with VERY LITTLE of anything else. Since then I have never ordered it again nor would I recommend it.
  9. ABSOLUTELY . ......and is the same in my household MelzaWelza. I also don't favour one dog over the other...........ALL parties cop it !!!
  10. The answer is right in front of you ! He is a hunting dog, a bird dog and this part of him, this "need" in him is not being satisfied ...and as a result he is barking through frustration. In affect he is trying to satisfy his own hunting (bird dogging) needs. Perhaps you should think about 'working' him in this area? You might find it will help him enough and therefore settle his barking down. ??
  11. Don't forget the weather has been a little warmer over the past few days and the pup will be feeling the heat ..........and this will increase his breathing rate.
  12. GREAT STUFF !!!! . Reminds me of my first Tenterfield 'Poppy' who was also excellent at the C work in Schutzhund !
  13. ..and I bet the poor snake had the crapper scared outa him too . So what happened? Did someone go "shoo" him away? I go to Skye and have never heard of that snake story.
  14. To rehome is to duckshove the problem onto someone else. Better and safer to have a dog like that pts.
  15. Sorry subzero but you would think you would have learned your lesson after the FIRST fight ! Why would you try and have these two bitches (of those breeds) together again after such a serious FIRST fight? You were only asking for trouble......especially as one is a American Bulldog..a breed that IMO is the "new" pitbull about to flood the market ..selling to tough dog seeking yobbo's here in Australia. Not saying you're a yobbo........but why on earth would you or anyone want such a breed when there are so many NICE breeds available? I suppose I will get flamed for that comment but the fact is I have come across at least half a dozen of that breed in the last 12 months and NOT ONE has had good stable temperament or character. The breed is a disaster waiting to happen....as you have found out through th fight you had on your hands. JMO.
  16. My JR 'Daisy' has a bad habit of cleaning my German Shepherds ears now and again ...much to my annoyance ....because the end result is my Shepherd ends up with ear infections .
  17. Why would you want such a collar ? What's your dog doing to make you think you need one for your dog? If you get one do you know how to use it effectively without damaging the dog physically or mentally ?
  18. Kaffy, I hope your beautiful little pup gets better very soon. Hugs to you at this very worrying time. Are the Vets or Vet going to be there through the night to keep an eye on him? If not.....you might be able to stay with him at the surgery?
  19. However, they got a dog anyway and he is beautifully loved and cared for even though they really couldnt afford the dog so you just dont know. You could be causing the dog to miss out on a fantastic home. (likely not but you just dont know). lanabanana, I understand what you are saying which is true of a lot of people who are struggling financially..............but these people, according to the OP, have clearly said they cannot afford to even feed the dog properly ,let alone vaccinate it or desex it. With these type of people, the pup will be a nine day wonder and once that puppy wonder has worn off......the dog will be ignored for the rest of its life.......if not dumped in the mean time.
  20. Sorry to the OP , but these people you are writing about sound like prize d*ckheads and , if anything, should be banned from ever owning a dog. If they can't meet the needs of a puppy in feeding it good quality food plus getting its very important vaccinations.......then they definitely need to be stopped from getting one (if that's at all possible) I agree with everyone else........ring the breeder/s and tell them the people in question are not suitable owners.
  21. Its about time something was done to improve the rubbish they dish up to us that we are expected to feed our dogs on. I can't see it changing much though.......because as it says its 'not' law....only a (guideline) standard.
  22. I agree! There was a German Shepherd in the film on Channel 9 ...I turned it on just as the dog was being strangled ..so I quickly turned off. The star is Will Smith in some futuristic film and he was killing his own dog (I think)
  23. I couldn't agree more HH, the owners of these dogs need to have the book thrown at them. I feel so sorry for that lovely old woman and her dear little Westie Hamish...what a shocking way for him to die. I believe only one of the Huskies did the attacking and killing...so I don't think it is right that both dogs should lose their lives. But the owner/s on the other hand need to feel the full force of the law for their irresponsibilty and stupidity !
  24. Me too Ishy, I could never leave my dogs...not even to go on a holiday..unless they can come too....but as most places these days don't accept dogs.......I haven't had a holiday for quite some years.
