It all comes down to training Jordalake :-) I'm 5'3 (okay, but very wide !) and I have no trouble with mine at all. I've had a few little junior handlers take mine in the ring. any dog trained from puppyhood to heel, and discouraged from jumping behaviour can be handled by us hobbits. Of course an adolescent male can be super playful and a handful, but as long as they have training you can usually get them to settle. fifi

Very good advice Showdog. All will be needed to make a case. the dogs doing the killing near where I work are traditional companion breeds & their crosses, backyard pets who form a pack at night. All the real hunters in this area have their dogs well secured. fifi

Oh god how horrific :-( our vet practice has had to deal with the innocent victims (dogs, sheep, and more) this week of uncontrolled dogs, and the ranger & police are gunning for them. that poor wee pony and his owners. fifi

My OH loves dogs & all critters, he's NOT into showing though, and I banned him after he attended two shows with me and made...ahem.....obvious but innapropriate comments on dogs !!! He's happy to stay home and look after the menagerie while I scoot off to dog shows. He still finds it hard to believe that I would spend heaps in fuel, camping fees, ect...for a ribbon or a bit of cardboard (challenge certs !!) and he is positivley in shock at the amount dog or horse people will spend on equipment, importing, ect.... If we have a win he's very supportive of my excitement, its just not his thing ! I, on the other hand find it difficult to be enthused about a new mother board, ipad thingy or anything remotely geeky !!! but like pointexter, I smile and indulge his passion :-))

No photos to share, but at an afghan specialty in Canberra some years ago, I wore my pretty pantsuit, lovely embossed satiny thing, problem was it had wide & long leg cuffs, tearing around the ring - the toe of my shoes got caught in the hem ! one near perfect somersault later, on the ground seeing stars ! true to being an old horsewoman though, I never leg go of the lead ! Judge helped me to my wobbly feet and I completed the lap. leaning on the ringside rail, thinking that perhaps I'd broken my neck.... I looked over to see a video camera operator ! I told him if that footage ever gets to funniest home videos - he was a dead man !!! fifi

Oh, I'm so sorry j, you gave little Occy the very best of your love and vet care - and with those long battles, there comes a time when you look into their eye's and you know they've had enough. And thats what makes a loving owner - selfless in your love, and letting them go. You'd have to be pretty brave !! I did a few runs here with some sibes, behind only two dogs on a trike thingy, on dirt roads and I thought I was going to die !!! These guys were powerful and it was all I could do to steer & hang on. so much faster than you imagine its going to be. fifi

One of the lovielest rescue people up here, Neen Brown took here dogs over & did the Iditarod, and she brought them all back again !! imagine the costs ! Not sure if Neen is the only aussie to take dogs over & compete. fifi
