hold him, cuddle him and spoil him rotten tonight, kiss the top of his velvety head and know that you are releasing him, better one day to early that one day to late. my heart aches for you, having had to make that decision so many times over many years. When his time comes, hold him while he gets his wings, talk to him and remember all your years together. Dont go alone, have someone who understands go with you. when they are this frail, they go very quickly. Its the most unselfish and strong way you can repay his loving loyalty. I'll be thinking of you tomorrow too. damn I wish their lives weren't so short. fifi

oooohaarrrggg, my guys decided to 'self serve' with a 'fresh' barf meal this morning, some silly bunny rabbits must have hopped into the dog yard, I didnt hear a thing, but came out to bunny giblets & fur everywhere! especially very yummy, were the bits they'd saved for later on, all tucked up nicely in the doggie doonas ;) and I really did not enjoy finding two bunny heads at the back door.... the dogs looked pretty happy with the carnage though.... and for the bunny-philes out there, these were feral rabbits! fifi

So sad for you Tiger, Irial looked like a little blossom. Having big dogs, and rescues over the years, we are always careful, however, we've had some close calls, and often one's that I least expected. Please don't blame yourself, little Irial was here for a special part of her life with you. cry as much as you need, most of us have lost our loved furbabies and know your grief. hugs from fifi, Danny & hounds

Hey Jeanne, speaking of raw food stuff, have you figured out a way to start getting the Bigdog meat supplies? fifi
-
sigh, it would be nice if this thread could be about the food folks!! and yes, no one likes to be preached to, Greatdanz, maybe you could re-name the thread - meat based diet DISCUSSION! I'd hate to see it deleted because its become a bloody slanging match. I think calling it a challenge and daring us to try it, immediatly puts well informed or enquiring minds into a defensive position. And feels like you are being morally superior. Its easy to be passionate and over zealous about dogs and health. I'm enjoying the variety of sources and information though. fifi

Fifi, it's nice to hear that you are making such a grand effort to give your dogs the best you can. That really shows a lot about your character! ;) And might i say, I LOVE Irish Wolfhounds! They are just such an outstanding breed, friendly and amazingly calm temperaments. Have you ever considered raising your own stock? Now I know this isn't for everyone, I personally could never do it, but I know that people raised in farm/livestock areas often have a different view. Hi Danz, I only have a small acreage, but any locals that butcher a beastie, come on down with the all the 'giblets' & bones!! the local 'roo shooters often drop off some legs and tails if they pass our place during the night! My best Christmas morning, was waking up to a bunch of drunken locals (think 'deliverance' music!!) yelling out Merry Christmas, and tipping 44 gallon drums of freshly dead cow onto my front yard! they were in ripped shorts & singlets, santa hats and staggering about my front lawn with chainsaws cutting up cow bits and clutching beers - AND singing christmas carols!!!!!! aaaahhh, the country!!! I'm also a vegetarian, so killing and butchering my own critters is out of the question! my old wolfie girl was very adept at killing and eating her own rabbits though! I dont mind handling the stuff, but not the 'killin' bit! My mum had danes, so I don't think any other size of dog was ever in consideration at my place! Whilst we do appreciate the challenge that you've offered, I think you'll find as has been said, that you are preaching to the converted, or at least the contented with what we do!! fifi & the hounds

Great danz, you also need to look at the local supply and availability. I live in a small country town, I virtually live at the four or so butchers so that I can be there to grab the raw meaty bones, offal and chicken carcasses. There is stiff competition to get it too! lots of other dog folk! I also drive for nearly an hour once a fortnight to a small pet meat abboitoir and try and buy in bulk if available. I always have to have good quality kibble on hand and freeze as much fresh meat products as possible. I also stock up on tins of sardines, fresh eggs, ect. I juice / pulp vegies to add the diet. There would not be enough raw supplies to feed my pack based on local supply, so I think its an important factor to include. Not all of us have access or the funds to have stock sent from far away. Our other consideration; we are in drought, and meat suppliers are hard pressed to cover demand at present. fifi

they are the best things since sliced bread for us!! I LOVE my coat king!! for showing wolfies, we thin out the neck ruff, and tidy up the loin / tuck up area. The Mars does it in seconds. I have a small one for finishing and a large wide blade for the 'overgrowth' and the dogs are happier too, hand stripping is uncomfortable for the big sooks, this way, its just like a quick going over with a slicker brush. You would need to be very careful with a silky or very precise outline / shaped coat, as it can whip through a large amount of hair very quickly. but for a coarse coat, I've found them ideal. fifi

wow, looks yummy (from a dog point of view!) thanks for the taste testing Molasses, we are hoping to somehow get a regular supply down here. fifi

oh Dogbesotted, to lose both your heart-hounds in one week, we can only offer our hugs and know what you are going through :D I like to believe they check in on us, until we meet them again at the bridge. hugs and empathy from fifi, danny & hounds.

may the longtime sun shine upon you Bella, hugs to your human mum and grandma. fifi

tears for your family's loss, you did the right thing, nothing would have been worse than a tradgety that resulted in Ophelia being put to sleep in fear and anger. We have had a dane with a brain tumour, and I think it was a release for her when we had her PTS - no more fear, or uncontrollable body, just held in our arms while the vet softly sent her to the bridge. You gave Ophelia her freedom at the right time. Thank you for being strong for her, hugs to you all and Charlie. fifi & hounds xxxxx

I phoned them on Friday and left a message, their voice mail said they were out in the factory and could not get to the phone. I'll try phoning again on Monday. If I can get a bulk deal Jeanne, I'll let you know, and maybe we can work out something regular if its good stuff. fifi
