  1. So sorry, cute or not, they are a feral pest. Report them.
  2. So the Australian goverment had all those cases doses of rabies vaccine handy???? Maybe it was nearly out of date (as we don't have rabies here but I suppose a stock pile in case is a good idea!) so good on them for finding a good use for it before turfing it out, if that is the case. Of course there is also the thought that helping to decrease the incidence of the disease in Indonesia also helps to decrease the chances of it coming here via a fishing boat or something. Win win all around, really. ETA more sense. How many doses in a case anyway? :D
  3. How do you know the noise is what yours really notice if you haven't tried one? Just curious Actually a very good question, because I am deaf myself and cannot hear the noise (although now that I am learning to hear again with the cochlear implant the day may yet come ). It's an assumption on my part - although I haven't tried these, I have tried the collarless fabric leashes that are worn check chain style, they check in the same manner, but obviously without the rattle. I find they are fairly useless for training, my dogs' responses are much delayed if they notice any check at all so I assume it is the missing noise making the difference. Also if someone takes the leash (with normal check chain) who doesn't know how to use it properly, then again you don't get the same crisp response if that rattle is missing. So I'm pretty sure the noise is what gets their attention. But as you and others have said, if you're not using it as a training tool but just as bling it wouldn't matter. EF typos
  4. Wouldn't it muffle the noise of the chain a bit??? And the noise is what mine really notice.... Surely it defeats the whole purpose? ...but I've never tried one so I don't know.
  5. This is very interesting...I was quite happy with the breeds I was familiar with (expecially the warts and all warnings) but I did wonder how one person could know 180 breeds intimately...hmmmmm...sounds like the answer is she doesn't...just pretends to with cookie cutter descriptions. The comment about different temperaments being prevalent in US lines in some breeds I have heard before. Temperament is not really changed in US vs European vs Australian in the breeds I am best aquainted with, but there are hereditary conditions that are rare in one country and common in another, so I suppose it could be the same with temperaments up to a point. Certainly you can have a line where the temperament is usually at one end or the other of the bell curve instead of in the middle.
  6. Look at her stylish silver face!! Yay! for remissions!!
  7. RIP Jake Left us too soon. Do your unique stuff up the at the Bridge while waiting. Hugs to the family especially young Ben
  8. Good grief, you're right. ;) And yet she has breeds such as Norwegian Lundehund, Norwegian Buhund and the Xoloitzcuintle (no offence anyone, Wazzat etc) Are they in the "too hard" tray then, lappiemum? :D
  9. I don't imagine that one single one-off splurge of fat is going to trigger pancreatitis, I would relax on that score. Just keep an eye on her in case of a tummy upset.
  10. I quite like this US site giving descriptions of breeds, including an honest assessment of their good and bad points and who is suited to own them. Apologies if this has been discussed before. You can elect to look for breeds by name, or grouped by size. Admittedly it is a sales sites for the author's books etc., (this post is not a recommendation for her methods or books necessarily, but I quite like the assessment of the breeds I am familiar with). Want to look at her assessment of your breed and see if you agree that it is helpful for someone trying to pick the right breed? Does it fit with your breed type here in Australia? Let us know what you think... Dog Breed Reviews
  11. Exactly right! Relax, sardines and mackerel are ok.
  12. Hi I will be chauffeuring someone up to Shepparton Showgrounds in a couple of weeks for the aggie up there and need to budget for fuel etc. My LPG tank is smallish so I will need to refuel in or near Shepparton for the return trip. Can anybody recommend a good fuel outlet there please? (I have a VicRoads so should hopefully be able to find the street if you name it). And could you please tell me what the LPG prices have been averaging there lately? Thanks!
  13. Oh no. So terribly tragic to lose one so young, so suddenly. Hugs to you at this sad time. Run free at the Bridge, Luna.
  14. Since it is all over it is either something drying out the skin (too much washing?) or a food allergy. Mites and topical allergies tend to be localised to start with. If he is itchy as well it may be a food allergy. Hopefully some of the cavalier experts will see this and give you some suggestions, it does seem to vary a bit from breed to breed whether the most common food allergens are grains or protein type.
  15. Oh wow! They're just like miniature cloth nappies! LOL I used to cut up worn thin nappies and use them as "bum wipes" (when all the face washers were in the wash) or "spew rags" (for burping). Men's hankies were good too. They didn't actually make baby wipes in those days - oops my age is showing now.
  16. Organic baby wipes? WTF? Are they pure cotton or something?
  17. She could have a food allergy or topical (grass, carpet etc.) allergy as well as the flea saliva allergy. Try adding omegas to her diet (flaxseed oil, fish oil etc) to boost her immune system. I have been really happy with Fido's Aloe Vera Gel Soap Free Shampoo for relieving itchy dogs.
  18. Re this poll, I am "other". My own dogs are on regular monthly preventatives (which I now use 6 weekly with the agreement of my vet.) Fosters and passers-through etc. I always test before STARTING preventatives if the dog is more than five months old (my vet showed the preserved heartworm infected organs of a large breed puppy that had been infected soon after birth. Oh Boy, ;) that was a wake up call! That puppy died at age 6 months during the treatment to try and kill the adult heartworms. ) I do not gap, because I want to retain the option of travelling with my dogs and if I need to go somewhere in a hurry I don't want to have to worry about whether they have heartworm prevention coverage, the risk where I'm headed etc.etc. Some of my family live in areas where the risk is 365/365. (Maybe the mozzies take Leap Year Day off? )
  19. NO, it isn't normal. Heavy shedding is normal for pugs (all times of the year) but NOT what you describe. You will need to get him vet-checked, if necessary the vet will do a skin scraping for mange mites. But many pugs have allergies, they can be topical allergies (grass, carpet etc.) food allergies (especially to grains) or toxin allergies (chemicals, fleas etc) which can cause skin and coat problems. The site you describe (base of tail) makes me wonder if it could be an allergy to flea saliva, another very common one. You wouldn't necessarily see a single flea on him - one could have bitten him days ago, jumped off since and you would still see a reaction if he is sensitive. Well worth a vet visit IMO. Edited to add: I can recommend a shampoo to ease him if he is very itchy, but better to find and treat the cause first. Let us know what the vet says.
  20. Comments in blue added by me. Edited to add: In my state, if you sell used cars (I think more than 5 a year) then you have to have a LMCT licence. I would like to see a law that you cannot sell a "baby" pet (e.g. puppy, kitten etc.) without a licence. If you sell less than 10 in a year, then you can have a limited licence - the more you sell, the more you have to prove you are not shonky, so to speak. The selling is where the money is, not the breeding. So regulate the selling more than the breeding. Accidental backyard litters can be given away, but not sold - unless all puppies AND both parents are neutered before sale. Again, the devil is in the details.
  21. I could collect you from Bacchus Marsh train station, drive you to the pound and then back to Melbourne with cavvy if you want to do it that way. Any day except Tues or Thurs. PM me if you need that. You would need to set it up with the pound first. From my memories of several Melbourne councils, it took weeks for a multi-dog permit to be finalised, though...
  22. Australian Champion Chaipore Crystal Bubbles 31/12/1994 - 19/09/2010 Daughter of one of my mother's stud dogs and my mother's spoilt princess for the first seven years of her life. After being shown to her title and rearing two (or was it three?) litters she joined us here in the Pugtirement Home to demonstrate her Inner Fawnness and become leader of the pack. Even my Mastiff bowed to her rule. For so many years, she featured on our Christmas cards, like these: She out-stubborned death in August 2007 when she was diagnosed with idiopathic vestibular disease. She was started on steroids but suffered a very severe reaction to them and very nearly died. I am convinced the puggy vibes and goodwill thoughts sent by the bucketload from throughout Australia and all over the world helped her through that time. She was switched to NSAIDS and ever after had a permanent head tilt and a drunken sailor stagger. The facial paralysis led to an entropion-like condition and the removal of the eye on that side. After that illness she gradually gave up her pack leader status but became the chief welcomer and nurturer for the temporary fosters that passed through. As each year passed, she because a little more philosophical and a little greyer. She took longer and longer naps and was slowing down, but still enjoyed her days, especially meal times and cuddle times. She insisted on the front passenger seat when in the car, not in the back like the plebians. She had a state visit to the vet a few days ago, and came home with meds for a bladder infection and the knowledge that we would have to tweak her diet to adjust for early renal disease, but her heart and lungs sounded good, and although she was advanced in age, no-one dreamed that she would be crossing the Bridge this soon. But Crystal always did things her own way. As I dug her grave in a lovely spot in the garden, half-way through I had to evict a hibernating frog, and I knew that that was right. She was always one to seek a bed that somepug else had already warmed for her, and was even managing it in her grave. Run free at the Bridge, my darling Crystal. For Crystal, and for all of the other senior pugs who have crossed the bridge after giving so much to us, please light a candle at http://www.gratefulness.org/candles/candle...eng&gi=pugs. You are asked to light a candle there for each of the senior pugs and senior honourary pugs that have left before us and you have been blessed to know. We've sorrow enough in the natural way, Our loves are not given, but only lent, At compound interest of cent per cent. Though it is not always the case, I believe, That the longer we've kept 'em, the more do we grieve: For, when debts are payable, right or wrong, A short-time loan is as bad as a long-- So why in Heaven (before we are there) Should we give our hearts to a dog to tear? 23. Hey I actally have a breading pear of those. One in silver and one in the rare bronze/mica. But i can't bread them anymore cause the ranger lives next door and says I have to macrochip pups befour sail and it costs to much. Here is a thumpnail pic Deshonko can I trade this breading pear in on a Giant Pug please? One that is trained to poop in my neighbours lawn and not mine.
  24. Hello, my name is Angela and I am a pedant. ;) Another one that really irks me is the all too common use of "draws" when "drawers" is meant. I indignantly corrected an ad agency on that one once and the reply came back : ..."and I would like to drawer to your attention...". I bet that was a big hit around the office. [attempts sarcasm] Does that make me a card carrying member of Pedants Anonymous? (You can be Chairperson, Chewbacca!)
