  2. Look here for the Planet Dog Orbee-Tuff Orbee Ball with Rope - large is only 10.5cm but is very strong Petstock has the 19cm Action Ball in their latest online catalogue: But maybe consider getting a Horse Ball toy - they usually have moulded in handles to which you could easily fasten a rope handle to to suit the owner. They are of course designed for horses to play with so are pretty tough. They mostly look like this: Just realised you could probably add your own rope handles to those Jolly Balls as well. EFtypos
  3. OOOOOH, I must be norty I am not a loyal customer. I don't think I've ever bought it from the same place twice running. I do an intense price search every time, ignoring any obviously dodgy ones. Just checked - my last lot came from Pharmacy Online aka Chemists Direct, I get a lot of my own vitamins etc from them. Great service and prompt postage. Was probably on special as it's not very cheap there right now LOL.
  4. My first thought, too, was "But I don't see any Shih Tzu". Then I looked again, not quite sure if it is perspective or if you have a minuature human in the background, but he might be a sort of large economy size Crestie? LOL How big is he? What weight? Then could the Crestie experts please tell us if he is in the normal range.
  5. Gee I'm too late!! BUT one of those boys needs to be Storm Trooper! ;)
  6. Here is a nice simple explanation of reverse sneezing I came across. I wish I'd had it before to explain to panicked owners certain their beloved dog was dying! Becky Lundgren on Reverse Sneezing Reverse Sneezing (Pharyngeal Gag Reflex) Authored by: Becky Lundgren, DVM Reverse sneezing is a disconcerting event in which a dog makes unpleasant respiratory sounds that sound like it is dying -- or will die in the next few minutes. Reverse sneezing sounds similar to the honking noise made by a dog with a collapsing trachea, but reverse sneezing is a far simpler condition that usually does not need any treatment. It is called reverse sneezing because it sounds a bit like a dog inhaling sneezes. The sound the dog makes can be so scary that many owners have rushed in a panic to emergency clinics in the middle of the night. The most common cause of reverse sneezing is an irritation of the soft palate and throat that results in a spasm. During the spasm, the dog's neck will extend and the chest will expand as the dog tries harder to inhale. The problem is that the trachea has narrowed and it's hard to get the normal amount of air into the lungs. Anything that irritates the throat can cause this spasm and subsequent sneeze. Causes include excitement, eating or drinking, exercise intolerance, pulling on a leash, mites, pollen, foreign bodies caught in the throat, perfumes, viruses, household chemicals, allergies, and post-nasal drip. If an irritant in the house is the cause, taking the dog outside can help simply because the dog will no longer be inhaling the irritant. Brachycephalic dogs (those with flat faces, such as Pugs and Boxers) with elongated soft palates occasionally suck the elongated palate into the throat while inhaling, causing reverse sneezing. Small dogs are particularly prone to it, possibly because they have smaller throats. Reverse sneezing itself rarely requires treatment. If the sneezing stops, the spasm is over. Oftentimes, you can massage the dog's throat to stop the spasm; sometimes it's effective to cover the nostrils, which makes the dog swallow, which clears out whatever the irritation is and stops the sneezing. If the episode doesn't end quickly, you can try depressing the dog's tongue, which opens up the mouth and aids in moving air through the nasal passages. Treatment of the underlying cause, if known, is useful. If mites are in the laryngeal area, your veterinarian may use drugs such as ivermectin to get rid of the mites. If allergies are the root of the problem, your veterinarian may prescribe antihistamines. Because reverse sneezing is not a severe problem, do not worry about leaving your dog home alone; if it occurs when you're not there, the episode will most likely end on its own. If reverse sneezing becomes a chronic problem rather than an occasional occurrence, your veterinarian may need to look up the nasal passages (rhinoscopy), and may even need to take a biopsy to determine the cause of the problem. Sometimes, however, no cause can be identified. Some dogs have these episodes their entire lives; some dogs develop the condition only as they age. In most dogs, however, the spasm is a temporary problem that goes away on its own, leaving the dog with no after-effects. Cats are less likely to reverse sneeze than dogs are. However, owners should always have the veterinarian examine the cat in case it's feline asthma, and not a reverse sneeze. Feline asthma requires more treatment than reverse sneezing does. 7. Sorry, Steve, but could you reword that one? I believe I know what you are trying to say but it doesn't read that way. To me, anyway.
  8. OK this is really weird. I was just looking at the Breed by Day list for the upcoming Melbourne Royal when I noticed that most breeds are listed in the singular (e.g. Cocker Spaniel, Field Spaniel) and a few are listed in the plural (e.g. English Springer Spaniels). All the Bull Terrier types are plural but the other Bull breeds are singular. No; wait! The Amstaff is plural too. Pugs and Papillons are plural but Pekinese and Pomerian are singular. What can it all mean? I know it can't possibly mean that I will only see one each Chihuahua and Golden Retriever on Sunday. Hmmmm, all the breeds listed for Sunday (when I am attending as chauffeur to an exhibitor in another group) are singular. Do you think it might be some sort of secret code for an international spy ring? Or is it more likely that I am just procrastinating and should get off DOL and do some work?
  9. OOOOPS!... Re thread name I thought this was in Off Topic and you were talking about teenage kids. Very glad you're not. I'll back out quietly now....[hangs head in shame...]
  10. The solution to your problem is - send him to me!!!!! AWWWWW! How totally cuddly is he????
  11. Phew! haha cant tell you how much of a relief to hear all this! I have been feeling so guilty for starving the poor thing! But still just out of curiosity.... If a dog was starving, kibble was available but she didnt like it- would she end up eating it? Or rather go hungry? Yeah, that's what I meant about seeing ribs - she looks fine in the pics. Drastic measures just mean play evil momma and offer her nothing but kibble until she gives in and eats it, which she will, eventually, rather than starve. I've had some fussy fosters through, in spite of what their surrendering owners say, they will always eat what they don't like within a few days. Also assuming that her teeth are healthy because sometimes crunchy dry kibble can hurt damaged teeth, but if you offer her something she shouldn't be having, like a sweet bikkie for instance and she doesn't wince while eating it, then that is not a problem. EFS
  12. If you can't see her ribs and her coat is glossy then all is well. If it is only the kibble she leaves then she probably just doesn't like it, try soaking it in warm water for 10mins first. Kibble is not a huge part of my dogs diet but I usually soak it to minimse potential bloat issues. But do make sure she has plenty of toothbrush foods (like chicken necks) if all her kibble is soaked. If she still won't eat it soaked, it is then up to you to decide if you want to go to more drastic measures to avoid creating a fussy eater.
  13. That's a handy find. I have bookmarked it. Thanks, Anne!
  14. I see what you mean Kirty. So what does that reporter (or, more likely, sub-editor) care? Just insert the shock-horror "bull" prefix as often as possible, don't let the correct facts get in the way.
  15. Interesting. So the treasure CK was guarding was happy Sassy? Or do you think it was just dog-in-the-manger stuff? That he didn't want it himself, and didn't care if the cat ate it, but he was determined that Xena was not getting it? Which do you think? And where did the wing afterwards come from?
  16. We are assuming that the breeder is ethical and the general consensus is more ethical breeders should be advertising in direct competition with the shoddier ones. Could have been a spur of the moment thing, I suppose, and sounds like the advert doesn't really differentiate (sp?) from the "rare" blue staffy breeders etc. which is a shame. OT but out of curiosity, what area are you in?? (Picking my brains for breeder )
  17. I think the OP only wants to keep them off the grass for a few weeks to let it establish properly. The radio fences (work for some, not others) are supposed to teach permanent boundaries, aren't they?
  18. All in the name of the mighty $$$$, I'm afraid. Most here wouldn't bother except it is law, so it cheaper to PTS then rehome, so sad. Many councils in here in Vic wouldn't even give a discount for desexing unless it was State law, sometimes Vic govt. leaves A LOT to be desired with companion animal laws but the can't rehome unless desexed is basically a good one. The missing part is attribution for genuine rescue orgs so that pounds can release to them, the desexing etc to be done by the rescues. Try getting a pollie to understand that, though?
  19. Errrrr, yep, errrr today is Thursday, not Saturday. :D He's a lovely man, but things do get confused around his Tardis. Better go back and edit stupid earlier post... I don't expect to see too many Tollers, I might pick you correctly!
  20. Used to be a regular occurrence in our house when I was a child... the homemade ginger beer was kept in the laundry under the concrete washtrough as that was the coolest place in the house. The doggy door was only inches away. Easily 10 - 15% of each batch would explode from the yeast plant overworking. Never had a dog showered in glass although two of the pekes, for some reason, used to race to the laundry every time they heard an explosion and lap up as much as possible before one of us scooped them up away from the broken glass. Weird.
  21. Is tomorrow!! ETA: Ooops, nope, is actually Sunday 17th Jan. Seems to be all profits to Cancer Council via Ballarat Relay for Life so excellent cause! Found a flyer with classes for pet competition - fastest ferret through tunnel should be a hoot! Gates open 12 noon so plenty of time for Melbournites to motor up if they so choose. I'll be the middle-aged santa claus shaped lady with a boofy Pug boy (hmmmm I guess that narrows it down LOL!) ***Imagines all DOLers intro'ing themselves to every large middleaged lady with Pug! Could be confusing LOL!*** Here's the flyer: Ballarat Pet Expo Competition Entry Form ETA: fill out and print above entry form if you want to enter your pet(s) entry is free. AFAIK not VCA sanctioned though. PPS This is also a full show for miniature horses (makes sense as they are the organisers). No full size horses/ponies allowed - anyone bringing a Dane or a Wolfhound? The photographers would have a ball with pics of a Dane towering over a horse!!! Where are you Sway? Program Miniature Horses Assoc
  22. AAARGH! Warning! Do NOT get one of the cheapie ones from reject shop etc. I had to use one of these (brand new) helping out a friend who was in hospital...the damn thing bent every which way whenever you tried to use it (and this was only on cat poo, mind). It was like trying to eat soup with a spoon made of bread I have a bad back and use the proper pooper scoopers like these: ebay pooper scooper They are great, no bending or stooping. You should be able to find them at good pet shops. Or if you have a friend who welds they could build some for you. EFS
  23. It really does sound more and more like a pain issue, maybe one that is causing bad habits to develop. I can see why his owner might think it is behavioural what with the home direction walk being eager etc. I know when I have back pain and MUST lie down, the going towards the bed/couch is a lot faster than the getting up & moving away bit, might be something the same here. I really feel for you wanting to have the dog looked at NOW, but having to wait until his owner returns. I can also see that unless new symptoms appear, your hands really are tied on that. Just let him go at his own pace, if nothing else he will pick up some confidence that no-one will force him to do stuff that might be painful. EF typos.
  24. Oh be still my beating heart - I do so love the seniors!!! Those silver faces are totally gorgeous! KittyKats story OMG! Praise the heavens for rescue angels... Look at that wonderful face on the little Aussie (can we still call them that? People these days always seem to think it means that American developed herding breed...not that they aren't nice too!) Got the terrier character and heart and drive in spades that little one, judging from the pic - doesn't look senior and is certainly not Silky, so what is the story there? Ooops = meant to say lovely pics but got carried away with the models...
