  1. We had 1 grey who after badly damaging her tail tip required 2 inches to be removed & in all honestly she never looked back after that. The hair roller is the best way to allow air flow.We also dunked the tail tip in Betadene or similiar but as already said make sure its a drying cream. Our girl was a show girl so we could crate her for healing time . The sad reality is once severely damaged it does re occur often & in the end that tail tip dies & goes black
  2. Flaxseed powder does work wonders on schnauzers,we have seen the results. Schnauzers are also prone to vomiting eggs.
  3. As a schnauzer breeder her diet is totally unsuitable for the breed. How old is she & what diet did the breeder suggest??Have you contacted the breeder for suggestions aswell?? Rice & pasta are the worse things to feed a dog with skin issues & im amazed the vet hadnt addressed the diet area. Schnauzers need a good diet high in essiental fatty acids, her diet at present doesnt give her any qualities at all nor truley being a good stable diet even if she didnt have issues. what biscuits do you feed, what treats does she get,how often is she clipped,do you have any plants in your garden that are toxic to dogs?? Does she have a good coat or is it harsh with very little under coat?? We bath all our mini in Heads n Shoulders(human ) any clients whose dogs have issues we also bath there minis in this & found it to be a great product on schnauzers. It sounds like she is over heating aswell.Does she wear a dog jacket alot?? I would also presume that her underbelly is very dry & scaly looikng plus being very itchy?? I suggest the first thing you buy is Flaxseed powder supplement for dogs(Melrose omega pet) Add fish to her diet for bad skin issues we suggest Kangaroo meat in small portions I will also add there are some breeders that do have major skin issues in there lines In WA we can pick the lines of many of the older dogs who have skin issues
  4. "The reason that he should not be allowed to fall asleep on your lap is because to a small breed this shows dominance. He doesn't see you as a leader if he can sleep in bed with you and on your lap." Sorry to say totally do not agree with this at all. This would mean the dog never ever has touch time or quality time which no breed of dog can live without. I have 2 setters that sleep on my bed,we have mini schnauzers that curl up daily on our laps, beds etc & never is there any dominance issue simply because there is more to leadership than that. If your dog knows where it fits in the pack than you will have leadership under control at any time. geez even my setter babies curl up asleep on my laps & there is certainly no behavioural issues there
  5. Firstly i would address the feeding ,im not a believer in leaving food down it doesnt teach the dog when to eat . I would start giving his dry & meat mixed ,if he leaves it pick it up & he gets it again for tea. Your the leader so you set the eating rules not the pup."I'd be suprised if it was anything medical. He is still young (11 weeks) and is a small guy. He is full of beans and very healthy." UTI infections dont make the dogs any less healthy.I have a dog that has battled the problem for 5 yrs,we also had a pup at 8 weeks with stones who still did all things normal we just new his wees where not right.
  6. Im not sure what your situation is regarding grass areas but if this was my pup i would be placing him onlead & going outside as many times possible during the day & night. When he pees in the house are they small puddles?? Many pups & adults can suffer from UTI problems & it can be the cause of many toilet training issues as simply the pup cannot help itself as it cant hang on.You need to check this to rule out any medical reason for weeing so when you start being a tad tougher you now the pup medically is capable of holding on. Also diet wise ,some products can affect dogs differently. For example if i drink a can of coke i can guarantee you i will be up 2-3 times during the night & countless times during the day,i avoid it like the plaque as it reaks havic with me. So maybe give us an idea of what you puppys diet involves. weeing when meeting guests can be a real issue. Often the insecure kind or more inclined to wee as there not sure where they fit in. Given this the way people greet the pup can enhance or minimize the issue.because the pup is cute everyone comes down to there level & go crazy in there greetings & then the pup wees everywhere . The pup needs its confidience built up so when guest say hello ignore it until pup settles & then ask all guests to say hello simply. "I think he loses the plot when he feels he is not the center of attention" Sorta right but im more inclined to say he doesnt feel full trust yet so hes unsure whats expected "It's hard to accept that a tiny little innocent looking thing is 'testing' us to see what he can get away with." Sorta true agian hes actually relying on you to give him instructions & reassurance, trust & respect. From the show ring point of view i have found some of the TT to be very nervous dogs so i would place alot of emphasis on ensuring pup is well socialized to the outside world & has good rules set at home, the most important thing is to take small steps that with each week achieve long term goals, patience now will achieve a happy life long pet. Also depending on the size crate (if its big) maybe make the area smaller
  7. You can feed the same diet but in smaller portions but you must ensure both dogs are feeed seperate otherwise you will never stop the problem. Also Hills contains corn/wheat & daccies can be intolerant to both so not a diet i would feed. Also what tip bits does the dog get?? A fat daccy is a giant health risk & if he goes down in his back whilst over weight it could be devasting. Also start to do light exercise but the truth is your incharge of his food & feeding regime & only you can make his body weight healthy for his breed
  8. Prior to the door being fixed did puppy go outside at night for pees or from day one to the laundry on the pee pads??
  9. Yep i agree our show greys who where around the 40-45 kg werent feed barf but a good dry plus raw mutton. Although if your having bad issues get his thyroid checked
  10. Also remember this is her first week in her own big world, suddenly has a new place & it can be quite overwhelming. Put a little time when home into the shed is for protection & its still outside for toilets but in all honestly the shed will be her source of shelter in winter & summer & far more suitable in the long term than a kennel. Also maybe partition the garage so her area is smaller, make part of it her own hang out
  11. "killing machine ' so this dog killed every living thing that came near it ?? "I am not a new comer to the world of dogs so please don't attempt to treat me as such"...but if he stuffs up again than I'd be sending him elsewhere to live. :D
  12. Not before 8 weeks if there a registered ethical breeder. We place out our puppies from 8 weeks, giant schnauzers can easily strt to go to there homes from 8 weeks. If there being sold under 8 weeks then i would be asking alot of questions as to why & generally its because the person who had the litter doesnt want the hassle of dealing with the 6-8 weeks mark
  13. More puppy playing/no stress intros in appropriate areas & time to be treated as a dog. Via grooming & the kennels we see alot of feral Shih crosses simply because theyve not been treated with the respect of being a dog & allowed to get away with things due to there size & cuteness but when they get bigger it becomes a big problem. Its important to remember your little fluffy is no different to a Rotti ,GSD or Dobe they all need the same training, acceptable behaviour levels & pack order respect
  14. We never feed beef it is well known for causing the runs, skin issues ,pancretitis & in some breeds too much contributes to bladder stones & it often over heats the dogs so hot spots aswell. we avoid rice & pasta aswell as there just cheap fillers that often have ingredients not ideal for dogs. many RR seem prone to pancreatitis aswell. Pumpkin is great for loose tummies, colitis we have found giving our old girl who has suffered from it for 14 yrs apples to be the best maintance. "Are things like acidopholous and bifidus capsules beneficial?" We use them alot, yes you can use yoghurt but not all dogs can tolerate dairy so the tablets are super. We dont cook any meats & we dont give vegies.
  15. Has the pup ever been inside over night or been in a position to learn to hang on??If not then i would presume no the pup wont simply due to not understanding the concept but some pups are very good at it,i have had 8 week old that never messed but they where inside from day one & confined at night
  16. Have used human shampoo only for well over 20 plus years & my showdogs are often bathed twice weekly .The greater majority of dog exhibitors also use human products with no ill effect at all. Just go to a dogshow & the first comment people make is how do you get the coats to look so good, human products. I have never had any issues with PH balance .
  17. "Chooks have the right to free range ' yes they do but you cant have your cake & eat it aswell,if you want other variety of animals then you need to be prepared to put yourself out as some dogs will chase chooks. I have setters & they have killed many a native bird, there bird dogs ,i dont like it & would prefer it didnt happen & when able to to i distract but thats the way it works. "when you have a terrier mix they just cannot be trusted" that is so untrue. "but if he stuffs up again than I'd be sending him elsewhere to live." Dogs dont stuff up the owners enable
  18. It seems its a hassle for you so i would contact the breeder or staffy rescue & rehome." that it wont infringe on our lives " This part & parcel of owning dogs & you dont just turf them out over things that arent there fault. If you want chooks then you securely house them but Given the wording you used "been 'blooded' that it will have compromised his character " i think you are seeing the worse in the dog & will never trust it
  19. If he was mine i would be buying a crate & crate training & thats where he sleeps each night. His night activities are fun, exciting & peeve you off & like any normal person you most likely tell the dog off in the morning & the dog thinks thats great fun. I think what people need to remember is just because a dog gets lots of stimulus doesnt mean its respects its position in the house. Labs can be ferals & the more access the dog has to do these things when not supervised the more it becomes a mission. I do believe having a run set up is a goo dthing because its provides the dog with a safe area & safe things to play with
  20. Something i have found is blues can often require a more specialized diet & can be prone to being more sensitive. If your breeder is a good registered one they will be a wealth of knowledge on diet but most importantly breed specific, some breeds just dont do well on certain foods so its important you seek the advice of your breeder or discuss any foods you may want to feed as a pup. I dont & do not recommend feeding beef as it creates as sorts of skin issues & upset tummies, some dogs can be highly allergic to chicken. If your breeder is on email ask them to send the diet sheet to you so you can look at it & then seek advice on the best place for purchasing
  21. Its a vet visit ,i think malts can also suffer from legg Perthes but it could be something sinister or something very simple but its something that needs checking
  22. "It's not like she's been an "outside dog" that we have to start again with. " Unfortunately she has in many ways ,shes outside when you work ,then inside for a few hrs then outside again all night,in terms of being an inside dogs she may spend 4-5hrs??. In her life experience at 18 weeks she mainly been outside & not had the consistantancy of understanding hanging on & understanding her own fuctions & abilities so dont think that it will be easy .You truley need to start from the very start & work your way up.She nows has to be retrained to give signals & not realize she can wake up at 1,2 or 3 am & toilet at free will for which is her routine, you now need to train her to hang on & alert you. "The first night it was pretty obvious that she hadn't even attempted to hold it." Not obvious just part of being a puppy you surely didnt expect the pup to hang on ?? especially when its in anew house & hasnt a clue what is expected of it.all it learnt was the firt night was comfy & cosy the second night its outside & why back to the routine she would have had at the welfare league.I am presuming the welfare league expelained about toilet training etc etc?? " We read that every mistake that gets made is a step in the wrong direction." yes but you have to realize that it wasnt a mistake simply a lack of not knowing. You cant punish a puppy for something it doesnt understand . Mistakes are when the dog is trained ,accidients are what puppies do until they have a good routine & understand whats expected there only babies .
  23. Yep unfortunately you have missed the crucial stage for toilet training & you may find your job to be much harder now.You may also be lucky & have a dog that learns quickly but you need to understand all she has been taught at present is shes outside & can toilet when ever without having to hang on. " but after trialling one night and having a huge mess to clean up the next day, we decided to wait until she had at least some idea about toilet training." what did you expect ??puppies mean accidients but training starts day 1 & the first accidient was your learning/teaching tool all that happened is you obviously found it inconvient so turfed her out without her understanding why. Dogs dont toilet train themselves there like toddlers you show them the right & wrongs I dare say no one got up to take her out either so the mess was human error not pups. has the pup been allowed in the house during the day?? My advice would be to buy a baby gate & let her sleep in an area easy to clean up because there will be many accidients before success
  24. Stuck to the dremel you get way more off
  25. I agree speak to the breeder but i presume your sister was well aware that Boxers can be very stubbon, full one & tough. The breeder should be your first call, its important they are told of any issue syou are having as they now the pup in question & the parents ,they also now there breed.
