  1. You have to use commensense. Socialing happens daily but when the pup comes home it must be given the chance to adjust to its new home, owners etc etc. If it doesnt trust its owners it wont matter how much you socialize it. "We have started training already and have done heaps of socialisation to dogs, power tools, trains, mowers etc all in the first week.. Was this too much?" yes i believe it was way too much. Trains?? seriouslt these are big frieghtening things & until a pup has accepted the smaller things in life a train would be so overwhelming. The noise, vibrations. We walk our pups done couples of houses & back at that age.We spend alot of time sitting out the front just allowing the pups to hear/see whats going on & encouraging its eagerness to explore but its done slow & steady. When the new owners pick there pup up we stress how important the first week is for the pup to simply settle. It is the key time to get pup to learn its new yard, where its slepping, who the new family members are.7 days go so quickly so you have spent more time getting it out then letting the pup now who you are. We still encourage safety with socializing, some people are happy to take high risks where not one of those but you can alot at home & in there vicinity of home to ensure your pups thrives. Over walking can do more damage on joints & createt life long probs that the dog suffers unneeded. Take baby steps because you get good results in moderation, over do it & you can get the same results as undersocializing
  2. On the long coats i just use the simple plush puppy brush not the bore bristle. Dont think the more you spend the better the result. The key to a good show coat in dachies is the hand stripping, blow drying correctly & using the right product for the dogs coat ,that may mean dilurting a product or using it neat or sometimes mixing/matching
  3. Every dog is different & whether they still have good hearing & smell is also a big factor. The biggest problem is the owners, they fuss them even more which takes away what confidience they do have. We have had a number of blind dogs & what we find works is using carpet runners to get in/out of house, make sure you walk them via the carpets at all times dont carry. Water bowls place a few around but again place on a mat . If the dog can still hear use your feet ,stomp when you walk so the dog can follow the sound & feel the vibrations & above all lots of praise when she has succeeded to going outside but dont pick up the dog needs to walk the route as much as possible. What we find important is the summer months the dog needs to learn the ropes so if it gets disorientated outside they dont end up with heat stress . Ours have the doggy door access & there own fully covered yard so if they get a tad lost there always protected. If it was extremely hot then we left them in the kitchen Luckiliy we worked from home. You will find your dogs nature will dramactically change, our current blind girl has after 5 yrs of total blindness hit a purple patch & is struggling with her routines of life. The dog will bump into things but you need to patrol your house at ther level from a blind dogs point of view & ensure anything that could cause damage when walked into id either shifted or fixed
  4. Knowing murdoch it will be allergic to everything & they will say feed it roo & potatoe & then say $1000. Hills would be the last food to give to a skin issue dog. Fox mange can cause issues like that. Living in Kalgoorlie & given the many weird places you can go walking i would be wondering where she walks.
  5. The long haired dachies i showed/groomed we bathed in Pantene but the finishing result was the blow drying. Sunsilk was also good on the longs coats
  6. Its common & some bitches it can be really bad.One bitch that i handled suffered so badly we ended up mating her earlier than planned to hopefully reduce the prob.It did help but she was retired earlier than planned from showing as it affected her coat each time etc etc. Some get over it quickly with minimal signs
  7. It will depend on what vaccine the breeder gave at 6 weeks. We in 20 odd years have never given the 16,20 boosters actually dont now many that do. Some 6 week vacc do follow a programme but with all our pups we stick to the good basics as pups. We then will look at the options for the 12 month booster The 3 yearly vacc has been around for a while now
  8. Being a breeder means you have expenses & no matter where you live you make arrangements to put yourself out & travel . If your a reg breder then you haveto follow the COE set done by Vicdogs about selling pups
  9. Too many dogs can upset the apple cart not everyone likes to be part of a gang
  10. I would dare say the pups first experience of being placed out alone in the courtyard was for a few hrs not a few mins. They need to whilst home allow pup to spend more time outside whilst there still there so pup can be weaned to what is expected.Small doses & confidience building to being independant go a long way. The pup doesnt now & when suddenly its left for a long period it most likely panics.
  11. You can also buy eagle pack from the Chinnerys 9455 1249,they bring it in by the container & are used by man yof the dog people
  12. Given that you say it was 20 mins there,30 mins of offleash playing then 25 mins walk home i would safely say that is way to much for a puppy. My large breed pups do no where near that until 12 months
  13. Not a method i would use. With our dogs we have the small few that luv "blowing in the face" which starts the zoomies. This dog may decide this method is a great game. I never hold the muzzle because a pups mouth is very tender/teething & to me that causes unnecessary pain that they may react to more,in hand shyness/face shyness. For us its just a simple,no fuss"No" here plus transferring the dogs attention to something else. The less fuss made & the quicker the focus is placed onto an acceptable activity the quicker it learns
  14. yes but remember he had the small breakout on his thigh area . I had a dog that for 6 months after heavy med treatment coat went from stunning to dry, course, brittle to slowly back again. Until his system was flushed through the meds had effected his coat for a good 6 months before all returned to normal. I would maybe give acidophollous(sp) tablets with his meds to replace the good bacteria in his system. Tablets can do funny things to a dogs system . The extreme humidity we have also experienced lately will also blow coats .
  15. Average life LOL i have been doing it for 16 years. Im lucky that all the eequipment is needed for the showdogs so that expense is no big deal. The one thing though i would never be a groomer without Double K clippers, they may be expensive but they are the true workhorses of the grooming world.
  16. What we bathed him in should have no effect on the coat. i would be inclined to say its the Medication he is on. As to Thyroid the vets here are very good. We had a dog with thyroid issues (bad) had no issues at all with the vet being very offay with the problem.
  17. Learn to groom breeds correctly & if you cant manage a set breed trim mbe honest & tell the client. There is nothing more destressing & seeing a mess created by a groomer. Go to dogshows whilst some trims are show trims the basics breed fundementals are there & you can learn alot especially if there is a particualr trend in breeds from your area. Schnauzers seem to be the most butchered breed by many groomers. They are a own breed but the shocking things groomers do to them is just amazinng considering there are good books to learn from aswell. So many seem obsesed with trimming there beards which is the age of the dog & doesnt grow back very quickly. Never take a clients word for what they want always make sure, many say all off so most groomers just clip off when infact that isnt what they meant,Always ask, double check. It is hard work & to maintain a consistant cliental youu need returns & referrals do a bad jobs & you get neither
  18. You also have cheeryknll Jb Wholesales Actually if you google there are stacks that sell allsorts & the prices can vary. We brought the strippong knives from a well known but smaller companey & they where alot cheaper, order here within 8 days. We have dealth with Pet edge with no issues at all. grooming smocks-vet suppliers often have these or hairdressing suplliers(actually if you can get a card to hairdressing wholesalers there sgood deals here & locally)
  19. You can cut the knots our but long term you end up with alot of uneven lengths & that tends to make it knot more. You wont hurt the dog brushing & a good comb through will keep the knots well under control. aslong as there brush with a comb & the dead hair removed weekly the matting should be near to none. personnally if it was me i would be taking the dog to the vets to just see where you stand with the heart. If the pup had a murmour when it left it can grow out of them. We have had a pup in this situation where the new owners signed paper work ,dog grew outof it & all is well, but given that you dont now if its permanent or not i would be making sure what its has.
  20. We have brought via the US but only from a well known company, brought once via US ebay & never ever again. All the other places excellent service
  21. Our dogs sleep on the bed but never the pups incase they fall off & break a leg happens all to often,
  22. A good diet makes no difference some dogs just require more than they can get.I have a dog on mag tablets & the difference is enormous
  23. Tying your dog there will only make the dog more nervous, unwilling to toilet due having no clue why hes there. He simply will think hes beening punished & will remember te pee pad for the worse not the good. "He's too distracted. He runs after every leaf on the ground, chews on sticks and nibbles and pulls at weeds, eats dirt, digs" Because he doesnt now what outside is for & i gather from the other posts being outside is a new experience & as hes been taught to go on puppy pads he hasnt a clue at present why hes standing outside, you have to be more hands on if you want results quickly. If your sitting there it means your not doing anything to encourage the pup what peeing is,you can sit there till xmas comes & the pup wont be trained any quicker. If your interesting enough to the pup & with the excitement of your voice you should be able to stand there with pup off leash & get it all excited about toileting & if it losses focus thats when you with great excited call it over & walk about saying "toilets"if it really gets distracted then use a lead . "If only there was an easier way " it actually is very easy but at present your making it hard, turf the puppy pads out unless there being used when your out for emergencies ,when outside the pup uses the backyard, you make or break the results & at present tying a small pup over a puppy pad because its too cold & too much work to be more motivated wont get you anywhere.
