  1. The use of crates for us is at shows, emergencies ,safety or time out & when we place our dogs in there its time to switch off & be relaxed. What your doing sounds fine but when you take pup out for a pee try pup on lead & give a command, sometimes the play interupts the train of thought.
  2. I agree if we have tradesman coming then the dogs are sorted by us only,we do not leave the responsability to the tradesman or those sub contracted by the company.
  3. 4/ if she is really badly biting we also do the number 3 but roll her onto her back, hold her muzzle and dominate her as well - a little eye contact seems to work also I should add that my girl spends most of her time on her back, so this is her calm place - we just do a nice quite settle after the muzzle hold and you can just see the bounce reduce in her." How often do you have to do this to calm her?? Eye balling a dog will not win you any brownie points & you are lucky so far .You dont have to dominate a dog ,domination doesnt achieve any long term results or respect. IPersonally for this person getting a male was a big mistake to start off with especially as you say your older males doe have issues.. Picking a dog that was better suited to your current dog would have been a better way to go but as the breeder isnt one who would have considered that the problem is now yours. Your older dog was snapping at it to start with, have a pup with the same sort of attitude & it doesnt take much for it to learn, copy & then stand up for itself but if the pup is growling at a human then it time to take that series.,it isnt normal behaviour at all . You do need to seek some sort of advice & most likely pre pare seperate runs oustide for when your not there as i wouldnt be trusting them alone
  4. When I try to make her submit, i don't have to force as she does it herself. I've been doing this as I want them to be in a submissive postion when my kids try to pat them or when we are outside and some children asked to pat them. They love to socialise with bth canine & human. Unfortunately this is where your wrong & your training her to not do whats right. Behaving socailly correct around people isnt forcing them to be submissive, submission is a result of doing something wrong. It also means the dogs are being pat in a position of no control or confidience .it means children will be patting the dog the wrong way aswell & not teaching the dogs that what ever position they may be in social manners is always a must I know she won’t bite me."" How do you know??? This is why people get bitten because there expectations of what a dog will do doesnt always meet up.Any dog can bite & we must always remember that & if your teaching the kids that a dog should submit before patting its also teaching them the wrong dog message.
  5. The fact is she is winning in all aspects at present ,so you have a 9 month old that has no respect for what your doing . The alpha roll is totally pointless & the dog has learnt coming to you will result in something unpleasant which is dangerous if your any reason you do need her to come & obey. It sounds like she has no idea what you want & maybe hasnt been trained to do whats expected & you have resorted to other methods that are creating issues.
  6. I dremel my dogs nails ,its very easy but it still require a good techinque that is often better if your showed than struggling & teaching the dog bad habits. A good grooming salon for a small fee will show you how,the vets often are the worse for nails unless there knocked out. Even good boarding kennels will do nails or show you how
  7. I dont use the guide ,.Each dog is different & i gauge the right amount according to the dog in question & if your adding anything
  8. Did you collect the pup late afternoon or early am ??
  9. It has nothing to do with fear periods but alot more to do with technique & the type of nail clippers you use.
  10. We have used a product called "Dong Quai " on bitches with season issues with no issues at all except helping the problems Dong quai is used primarily to treat menstrual complaints, such as menstrual pain and scanty menstruation. Studies have shown that dong quai is useful in treating other gynecologic complaints as well, including premenstrual syndrome (PMS), and menstrual problems such as cramping and irregular cycles. Though dong quai does not actually contain steroids or hormone molecules, one of its constituents is coumarin. Coumarin is most widely known for its use in preventing blood clotting, but constituents related to it may have numerous actions. Coumarin compounds have an anti-inflammatory and antispasmodic effect, especially on the uterus. Dong quai also contains ferulic acid, a pain reliever and muscle relaxer. Indeed, the herb is often used to treat painful menstrual cramps or other cases of uterine spasms. Oddly enough, several studies have shown that dong quai acts as a muscle relaxant overall, but before it relaxes the uterus, it stimulates the uterus briefly. The uterus is a muscle, and when dong quai stimulates it, its tone improves and it becomes tight and contracts more readily. All muscles function better when they are well toned, and the uterus is no exception. A well-toned, strong, healthy uterus is less prone to cramps and muscle spasms. In addition to relaxing the uterus, ferulic acid also may relax the heart muscles, lower blood pressure, and calm cardiac arrhythmias (a variation in the normal rhythm of the heartbeat). Studies also cite dong quai's effectiveness in treating allergies and respiratory complaints. Several chemical agents in dong quai may have an antihistamine and antiserotonin effect. Histamine, serotonin, and other substances are released from blood cells in response to something that irritates the body -- such as pollen, dust, chemical fumes, or animal dander -- and causes the symptoms we associate with allergies. An antihistamine curbs these symptoms, thus explaining dong quai's reported anti-allergy effects." If you google it does list the pros/cons that everyone should be aware of with any product prior too but we have used this highly successfully..
  11. Pups on limited register (with WA canine body)? We dont have to register all pups in WA (not until next march anyway) Microchipped? Isnt compulsory in WA. Its something you can ask but not something that is a requirement of the breeder. The thing to remember with the vaccs is the latter its done the latter the pup can start socializing so you are behind the ball at the crucial time
  12. Most dogs dont like hills science diet. Do you leave her food down all day?? What sort of treats does she get?? With fussy dogs (not that they stay that way long here) we use puppy biscuits. We also feed smallers amounts & if they empty the bowl quickly we dont refill it straight away, the dog is praised for eating all in that bowl & we will try again the next day. They dont get treats from the hand, all food goes into the bowl & we dont pander too its needs if its simply being a stubborn eater,we also make sure there is no reason for why the prolonged fussiness is occuring but normally is a habit the dog has got into as often food time can be too much of a regime & the dog nows it
  13. We actually get a number of clients who board there dogs for a few weeks to see what happens. Many have figured they have spent so much money with no result they try an away situation .In all cases it has been an issue with either the clients home or where they walk.In the odd case it has been a family member denying they where feeding treats but had been .. Personally i would be stopping the dam swimming for a good period simply because if she has sores etc it is just being reinfected eith yuck water. Will she be sterilized?? She could have a hormonal issue.. I am presuming there feeding the same diet you suggested?? Are they using any spot ons??
  14. Personally as a breeder doing a "do it yourself" vacc for parvo isnt something i would do for any puppies being sold . If the breeder is doing it herself then i presume it wont be seeing the vet for a puppy check??When pups are vaccinated that is when they get there puppy health check to ensure for the breeder & owners sake that all is well before it leaves. The do it yourself vacc are very cheap to buy & will save the breeder money but cost you more . If its a registered breeder this vacc may not be acceptable for the code of ethics for selling pups. My breeder has said she is NOT doing th"e C3 but is only doing one solely for parvo. What should I do?" Ask her why .It isnt the norm at all
  15. .".That said there is NO SUCH THING as a dog that is "totally bombproof" with children...." Even as breeders we always say to our buyers we send home a well adjusted, socialized pup what they do with it for the next 6 months makes or breaks a pups personaility whether that be kids teasing ,being to firm & breaking its spirit or just not setting any boundries. Pups are smart & doesnt take alot to train but it is easy to ruin
  16. There is no reason for the dog to be clipped off if brushed & maintained. Long coats survive just aswell as a short coated breed the only difference is the brushing if you want a long coat it must be brushed through. I am a groomer & yes many people do clip then off simply because they cant/wont brush them so its easier to maintain in a nice fluffy puppy trim but many also maintain there longs coats & put the hard yards in.
  17. agree with sir WJ.We groom a number of dogs that swim in water that have skin issues, many dont but for some it does create issues especially if the water isnt pristine. In one case a dog ended up with fox mange as the dog was swimming in the same water hole the foxes where hanging around
  18. Diet plays a big part in a dogs health & cat food is one to avoid. What did the breeder suggest you feed?? Grumbly stomachs isnt normal so make a list of what you feed & also add any treats, pig ears etc etc. All foods need to be considered when you have a dog with an issue. With the bassett if its grumbling alot i would also consider the diet especially as its a breed so prone to bloat..
  19. Does the dog swin in water or dam like water alot??
  20. we dont use beef as that is a major cause of skin issues We use mutton or roo
  21. I agree go to a dogshow,it s free & you can see so many dogs in real life first. Of the breeds listed cavies are great, english springer spaniels are bigger than cockers but smaller than goldies & there great family pets aswell. There are so many breeds that would be suitable its really a case of size, exercise, coat & what you expect of the dog in the family set up, alos whether it will be inside /outside. Size of your car for fitting dog & family in.
  22. What are you feeding now. Personally i would use hills in a pink fit ieven there z/d diet has certain ingredients known to be skin issue food. What are you feeding now & do you feel there is improvement??If you feel the dog is doing well on your diet then i would stick to it. For our double coated dogs we simply bath in either selsum blue or heads & shoulders & especially any dogs with skin issues via grooming we also use this & found it to be way better than the dog range . His coat could be wirey as hes started to self strip. If the dog hasnt been groomed whilst not being big shedders the coat will eventually die & could also have had fleas.. Most vets will say the hills range which i think is far to expensive & doesnt work that well.
  23. We groom a number of westies that have poor coats due to no undercoat which can be due to its breeding. You say your groomer is good so i will guess they will understand not to clip it too short, westies with no undercoat clipped short end up with the problems occuring over & over. Everyone will suggest a different product. For our dogs the advance range makes them itch(double coated breed)
  24. My experience of raising singletons has been the pup turned out to be true gem, laidback, very social & no trouble at all with social manners. We havent had any monsters & my friends also who often have singleton pup have never had any behavioural issues either.so for me i cant say 1 pup as turned out any worse than those in a litter. Some pups arent as cuddly as others, maybe you are over doing it & the pup isnt sure how to react .How many people pick the pup up?? Do you just grab pup or give it a chance to acknowledge your there??
  25. We dont recommend to our pup owners the heartworm jab & most certainly shouldnt be given on the same day. The problem is too many pet owners dont ask questions.Ask your vet why, reactions, benefits etc etc. Its like the vets that give C7 why when most dogs arent in areas that makes them high risk. Most certainly ensure the vet has reported it but we are also finding far to many vets are handing out print out vacc sheets only & even with the cards arent placing the sticker of the brand/batch number .The sticker is supllied with the vacc & is the record for any problems or future reference so if your vet isnt placing the sticker also insist on that ,The manufactures supply them .
