  1. Where is that? (apologizing for my geographical ignorance....) Any area can make this work...clubs have been organizing but it doesn't have to be...anyone is free to email or PM me for more details on how to have a seminar in your area.
  2. I figured I would start a new thread as the old one was getting a bit cluttered and hard to sort out!! I am starting to book seminars for 2010 and will add them here as they are confirmed. I will also indicate the areas that have expressed interest and are working towards having one. Shepparton Obedience Club (Victoria)has booked a seminar for March 13-14th. I will post contact details for those wishing to get in touch and register. A seminar in Adelaide and Perth are both tenative at this point, pending confirmation which hopefully will happen before the year is over. One is tentatively for the beginning of March, and the other is looking at sometime in June. Keep an eye in here for updates and don't forget about the Rally Forum at: http://z3.invisionfree.com/RallyODownUnder/ Only takes a moment to sign up, and it's a non email group to discuss the sport and announce upcoming seminars or matches.
  3. I taught my 'stupid' showdog to bow as it was a natural movement for him when he got up from a snooze. I got myself prepared with my clicker and a few treats and caught the motion. It didnt' take long for him to present the motion to me and I was able to shape it fully into a good deep bow and hold. My new girl has a ton of natural actions that over the next couple months when we aren't showing, I"m hoping to shape into 'silly pet tricks'. I love doing it as it gives the dogs something to think about and tones my training methods up after a year of just doing conformation stuff.
  4. You beat me to it...I was going to post a reminder about the weekend. Looking forward to seeing you all there. Don't forget if you have a laptop, to bring it along so you can follow the powerpoint presentation. Everyone gets the CD with that on the Saturday and it includes a ton of other stuff for you to take home and practice with! I beleive Billie is taking registrations til Tuesday, so she can let me know how many will be there so I have enough materials for the lecture. I'm very pleased to do one of these so close to home as the rest have required a weekend away and a plane trip....
  5. Kes delivered three lovely Black and Tan girls on Sunday night. All are doing well and the new and first time mom has settled right into her maternal duties.
  6. Great news....keep us informed as to how it goes!
  7. My manchesters always worked with their tail out and sweeping down, but then this was the correct tail carriage for the breed. Only puppies carried tails high and over their backs (a severe fault) In the case of the dominant dog, it showed as tail straight off the back and quivering.
  8. Congrats on all the new babies...we've still got a couple weeks to go yet.
  9. We are now looking at organizing something to happen in the Melbourne area. Stay tuned for more information and it probably won't happen til the New Year but I'll be sure to post any details as they become finalized.
  10. Our girl Kes is almost totally positively in whelp....due date is still around the 25th. I don't think she's got many in there but she's a deep chested girl so she could be hiding them....our last litter was like that....took til the last two weeks before Brandi exploded in size and turned into a sheppie whale! Kes is gone all mushy and lovey.....she's normally fairly stand offish and aloof....we got pinkie nipples and she's peeing while away from the yard (she came with us to the dog show today as did all the mob) and normally she won't go and saves it til we get home again!
  11. Rally -O seminar confirmed now for Albury NSW December 5-6th. Please contact Billie Louwrier at [email protected] for registration details. Please be sure to pass this information around to those that may have expressed interest for this region. I know that there were a few from the Shepparton area and Wangaratta/Myrtleford regions that have spoken to me about this in recent months. Will post details as to time etc, when I get them.
  12. Both are lovely products and I've used them when I had Sammies, however Crown Royal does not always agree with some dogs skin, so you might want to watch that. I had a number of dogs that were sensitive and broke out after using it.
  13. That's funny as that is the word I use and have no problem with. If you read the ANKC rule book it says one word, one syllable in English so that word is perfect. I should have added, that I can't use it because it would be a second command as my "come to heel position" is either "around" for a right hand finish or "back" for a left. I use Close to tighten up the final sitting position if they are crooked or out too far from my leg.
  14. I've never been able to use two sets of commands....too much to remember...and perhaps I'm old fashioned. "Heel" means walk by my leg and be attentive...."come" means come in and sit front. I will use 'close' when I'm training to indicate that the dog must sit better, that can mean closer or more straight or whatever....naturally I can't use that command in obedience but it's the only extra one I've ever allowed myself to use with the exception of one Manchester I had that absolutely REFUSED to come and get in his crate when I said "kennel" and I always had to sternly insist "NOW" and he would happily bounce into it...(little snot!) But again,.....not something needed in obedience!
  15. Nothing wrong with off side heeling and no, it's not used in Rally. However in reference to a sore neck, I personally have issues with any dog heeling that has it's head twisted to look up at an unnatural position. There are no benefits to this sort of heeling on either side in my opinion. It doesn't make the dog more focused or attentive contrary to what some may preach.
  16. One isolated incident isn't too much for concern until you rule out UTI or other such things, however connected with the snapping episode which I deem as resource guarding, this MIGHT be more than a simple 'caught' situation. If you have begun to sort out the resource guarding or simply putting the dog back in it's place with you as alpha, this could be a way of him lashing out in frustration for being told what to do and to back down the totem pole. If it's repeated, I would be concerned that it is in fact a struggle for dominance as many alpha dogs mark items or objects that they deem inferior to them. Such items can be anything from another dogs feeding dish, to their bed, or in some cases the humans they live with. I would not dismiss this event entirely however at this point until you rule out any health issues, I would not stress overly at this point unless you see other dominant behaviours and then basically if it walks like a duck, sounds like a duck and looks like a duck........
  17. I agree huski, and I won't use head halters at all for those reasons, as well as I've seen far too many neck injuries develop as a result of wearing them. Perhaps I"m old fashioned but I still use a correction collar and some good old fashioned patience to solve the pulling issue.
  18. Yes we're working on some things for the new year (keep March clear on your calendar!) Boy you got good ears Biker Girl to hear stuff from S.A. down your way!!
  19. Albury is tentatively November 14-15th with more details to be announced. They had hoped to have it the week after but I have plans that weekend so can't be done. Will post more hopefully after the Albury shows on Sunday as I will be talking more about it and hopefully finalize a few things.
  20. Here at Gipfel GSD's we are also in the "is she/isn't she" stage....I'm thinking Miss Kes is losing her waistline but Tony's still not sure. We'll have to wait a bit longer I guess. She's due around Nov 24th or so.
  21. A huge thanks to the Townsville gang who hosted the latest Rally seminar. Attendance was wonderful and the enthusiasm, second to none! We stayed with great hosts and I really enjoyed the social event (meet and greet) on the Friday night before the event, which included a surprise Birthday cake for me! The seminar went well, with a nice venue to work in, and two lovely sunny days which were really appreciated by me coming from the chilly south where we were still using the wood heater up til the day we left to fly up! Thanks to those that came down from Cairns to attend, as it's quite a drive. I think they all enjoyed themselves and their dogs were working really nicely. I gave out another 100 score (doesn't happen very often) to an amazing kelpie. Congrats to the dog and handler for taking my breath away on a very challenging course! As a reminder to some, the URL for the Rally Obedience forum is: http://z3.invisionfree.com/RallyODownUnder/ Only takes a moment to register to use this web based forum (similar to DOL) and we are hoping that more people sign up and begin to ask questions and list their upcoming matches. I was told that some matches were being planned for the Townsville area as well as some other areas, so lets use this forum to keep everyone up to date on the latest news about Rally-O. Am waiting on word from the Albury area as to possible seminar, and still chatting to a few about something in Adelaide and Perth. Keep an eye out for details as I'll post them when I finalize things.
  22. Is there such a thing? Can it be downloaded from Dogs Vic (I can't seem to find anything other than the bare basic descriptions) If anyone has a copy, can I beg/borrow/steal it?
  23. Angelsun is happy to announce five new Pinscher babies born between 10am and 2pm Sunday October 4th. 3 girls and 2 boys and all doing well. Black and tan in colour.
