  1. Another completely preventable dog bite and the victims (the baby & dog) suffer due to the complacency and irresponsibility of the parents. What will it take for people to realise that their inaction can have such devastating physical and emotional detriment to people and animals alike? To me parents should be charged with negligence if they are not adequately supervising animal/children interactions and an incident occurs. I still get angered when I recall being criticised for insisting on supervising my children with our large dog
  2. I also agree that Steve is a great guy, I told him last year that I was disheartened with the Pet Industry and was considering leaving it for good and he automatically offered to fly down to SA to conduct a training session if I organised it. It was really nice knowing that there are people still out there that will give their own time to encourage others. I didn't have the time to follow through with it but I am still here as he made me feel that my contribution was worthwhile so I appreciate that
  3. Oops yes it is the Sunday, I should know because it is my son's 8th birthday the Sunday before on the 12th. I will stick it in OT too, thanks
  4. Hi everyone, Unfortunately I have only been lucky enough to meet 3 DOLers IRL as my darling CASD Jake is not at all social and I am very shy and awkward away from home, but I was hoping that some of you may be interested in coming up to our property at Lower Hermitage/Inglewood (near Tea Tree Gull/Modbury) on Sunday September 18th for a tree planting working bee. We have between 600-800 native tree seedlings to plant before it dries up and we are running out of time. I will be 37 weeks pregnant so I am happy to organise a bbq and salads for lunch time as I won't be able to do much planting. We have a fencing contractor up here now putting in all the poles but the wire won't be up by then so it would unfortunately need to be a dog free day. When the weather warms up and the fences are finished I am happy to have a dog outing so the dogs can have a run and swim in the dam in anyone likes. We are trying to fence off the watercourses to help prevent erosion and give the native birds some habitat and I also want some trees planted in my new kangaroo yard (also poles only), we already have two areas where we have done this and the trees are looking great. The area is where we are about to build our house, the shed is up and there is a portaloo so it isn't too primitive. If anyone likes we can go for an explore and meet the horses, ponies, camels, donkeys, emus, sheep/black/white lambs etc and we also have a small winter waterfall that is fenced off too if anyone would like to go for a hike. I feel really uncomfortable putting this out there but I would certainly appreciate it if anyone has any spare time on that day to come and get their hands dirty. I am happy to pm our address if anyone wishes to come up Thank you
  5. I'm sorry Sunnyflower how disappointing, I hope they change their minds as you would be a great home for DAISY, I was looking forward to reading about her new life with you
  6. I knew you would come around to see the dark side, I mean Daisy side Sunnyflower
  7. The problem is that most dingoes are hybrids and it is illegal to keep dingo or dingo crosses in SA, I don't like their chances to get them saved. I remember a week or so ago a DOL member in SA mentioned that they had a dingo cross living with them and I shuddered, however it must have been a typo and should have read kelpie cross I remember the dingoes having pups at a certain wildlife park I was involved in and I used to love them and would play with them for hours only to come in one day to find out they had all been "put down' as they were surplus to the needs of the park and no other park wanted them. Hello! why let them breed then
  8. SF see the little kangaroo in my sig she is my Daisy and she is an angel so full of love and cuddles and makes my heart sing. These are my girls Daisy and Poppy, I like Holly too (that is my baby camels name). One thing to never forget and that is the amazing strength that they have and they go from lazy to super sonic in seconds so getting a handle on training is vital. It is so easy to get complacent with them as they are lounge lizards most of the time
  9. I have found that they are incredibly loyal, heavy, loving and it took them about 60 seconds to realise that I have said something to them They are also very comfy pillows when laying on the floor She looks like a Daisy or Poppy to me ;) but they are my fave names OMG I just noticed you don't like the name Daisy I take it back they are smelly, dirty, naughty and hate cuddles
  10. Very similiar to both of our old Great Dane cross Bullmastiffs that we have had, aka knee leaners
  11. I have used homeopathic remedies from here Holistic Animal Medicines
  12. There are no mandatory microchipping laws in SA and I highly doubt he was chipped and I wouldn't put it past his owner to do the old switcheroo
  13. One of our customers has a Glen of Imaal Terrier and another a Black Russian Terrier which are very different, no one has ever guessed my CASD but I wouldn't expect them to either as I had never even heard of them until I was researching a suitable Flock Guardian for us.
  14. I agree with the breeder, they will have the dogs best interest at heart but only you will know if you are comfortable with that. When we go away my mum reluctantly stays at our house as our menagerie is not the easiest to deal with and takes about 2 hours per day just to make different feeds etc and Jake can't be moved from the property as he stresses and I wouldn't ever trust his behaviour with a stranger or even leave him somewhere with someone he knows at their house just in case.
  15. Jackie are you sure that there has only been 1 fight as yesterday he was covered in bite wounds and today has only 2 scabs and a nick, puncture wounds don't normally scab so quickly. I am not trying to sound like a smart a$$ at all but it seemed much more serious yesterday from your initial post. I agree with the separating whilst unsupervised, desexing and a behaviouralist I would also be concerned with the long term behavioural effects on Boss and how he interacts with other dogs in future. Good luck, two same sex bull breed types together is a huge responsibilty as I am sure you are aware.
  16. We just received a letter that Euk Vet Diets, Naturally Wild - Turkey varieties and Custom Care Sensitive Skin are being recalled here.
  17. The thing to remember though is that pounds have limited spaces and the longer a dog is kept the more likely there isn't room for another stray and also disease risk is increased the longer they stay. CUB's haven't heard that one but I like it
  18. They left them there to teach them a lesson Councils (depending on the area) only have to hold the dogs for 3 days, it is the OWNERS responsibilty to pick them up they are not a boarding service and dogs don't learn lessons by staying in them
  19. From the petition site Thank you all who signed this petition. Unfortunately due to an error with the police department this 'person' was let off and all charges were dropped. Once again thank you for signing.
  20. Pet Shops are constantly accused of only sourcing puppies from Puppies Farms but when the RSPCA was asked (at the RSPCA Puppy Farm Seminar) why they don't advise who are puppy Farmers they said it was a privacy issue - what a crock "Pet Industry News asked why the RSPCA does not utilise the law requiring pet shops to record the names of the supplier of animals to the shops to establish whether they are buying from Puppy Farms and why the RSPCA does not advise the PIAA of the names of puppy farmers so that members can be made aware. The answer given was that Privacy Laws prohibited such disclosure and that NSW was the only state where such records need to be kept by law. They were unable to answer why RSPCA NSW did not utilise these NSW records." Also the RSPCA was found fudging puppy purchase statistics "It was a very enlighten meeting however it’s a shame that I came away with the most notable point being RSPCA getting caught out fudging the figures that have been disclosed to the media – Dr Wirth stated in the Melbourne Age that 57% of dogs are sold through pet shops – it was pointed out by a RSPCA staffer that the question asked of the public was “where did you purchase your pet from” – this include all pets including fish. One can now assume that all of their data is inaccurate including “about 95 per cent of all puppies sold in pet shops have been bred in puppy factories or farm” which I personally know is not correct - the credibility of the RSPCA has been shot." Regarding education of staff we do not sell puppies or kittens however I find it insulting to land all pet shops in the same basket, my staff are educated constantly and I don't hire people with retail experience only. My stores reputation is built on knowledge and customer service and I am very proud of that fact (even though I am only here for another 3 weeks).
  21. Joel, I do not want to sound as if I am at all criticising anyone that wants to help this dog as my life is dedicated to my animals, many of which had no other chances left. But not surrendering her can hamper her returning home, the simple fact is her owners may not even want her back or even look for her but if they are her chances are minimised if she is kept somewhere else. She may not be a lab at all and if she is described as one and the owners are looking for a different breed or cross which is similar then she may not get matched up. Her short tem chances of being reunited are better at the shelter, her long term prospects of finding a new home may not be but again unfortunately that is the case for thousands of animals every year. If we choose what laws to abide to when it comes to Animal Control we will never be able to make positive steps forward in the future as why would laws get changed if current ones are ignored?
  22. Please do not ASSUME anything when it comes to me, I have worked in shelters putting down dogs/cats every day. Is it something people enjoy - NO. Why is it necessary - BECAUSE IRRESPONSIBLE PEOPLE LOSE THEIR ANIMALS AND DON'T CLAIM THEM OR HAND THEM OVER BECAUSE IT IS AN EASIER OPTION! The cold simple fact is that Legislation and policies exist, people are not a law unto themselves and can not make up the rules as they go along. I have been asked to help rehome a 2 1/2 year old purebred desexed male Labrador as the owner was going to send it the the RSPCA or AWL and I said I will help with other options. WHY? Because anyone walking into a shelter and sees a lab and then in the next pen a cross breed anything will pick the lab for the simple fact it is a lab. Does it matter if a lab is suitable, no they are getting a bargain so who cares. Naivety whilst noble does not reunite lost pets with their owners, procedures and the owners wanting to find them does
  23. A young pregnant lab (whether she is pure or not) is no less important than a brindle staffy cross. There are procedures in place to protect the owner, the dog, the council and the finders and unfortunately hundreds of pure and cross breed dogs die very day, it is a hard, sad fact of life and until owners are more responsible it will continue to happen regardless of how we feel.
  24. I know a lady whose pet posum kept constantly scratching/biting one particular spot on her arm, turns out the spot was malignant and if it wasn't from the possum harassing her she said she would never have sought treatment
