Oh the pups looks so cute! I hope the little one makes it! Tenties, so good you have a new bonnet, are they going to come to the party and fix the rest of the troubles? Nice pics JJ, your ring in does look like a sweet girl, I hope you can find a good home for her, or keep her yourself ;) Whats one more in the grand scheme of things!! I've been busy latley, I have had my mum staying, we went to logans for lunch today, Gee thier food is so awesome, actually not that I'd know because thanks to RJ I always have the same thing :D OH's mum has been in SWHC for about a month after she had a stroke so been up and down to see her. and just the usual work and life in general!! Hey Tanya do you remember Bruce from your puppy classes (Bull Mastiff) his owner Jess cut mums hair the other day, she did an awesome job too. while we were chatting and of course we got talking about dogs and Mastiffs and your name came up, hope your ears weren't burning to badly :D Tez, I bet young Gus has settled right in now and he and Jane are probly like an old married couple!! I am attempting to bring my good camera to training on Sunday but If I walk up I might ask you if I can put it in your car while we are training so I don't have to worry about it. Shan should be back in town by now, I had a txt from her the other day and she was in Sydney. Oh and the other thing I wanted to mention and I might have to go and make a thread about this in the show forum part, the guy who runs the hopkins river caravan park came in to work the other day and I served him and we got chatting about the park and how I hadn't been out there for years and ra ra ra and the conversation led around to dogs as it does and I said he would get a few about when there is a local show on and he said yes lots and really sang the praises of the people who come to the park with dogs and particularly the show dog people he said they were fantastic and always did the right thing as far as dogs were concerned!! I just thought that was really great to hear as you always hear so many crappy stories about people and thier dogs

What Dried Biscuit Are You Feeding Your Pooch?

Or he has had a recurring bladder infection that antibiotics aren't completely knocking out of his system. Infection was my first initial thought at the start of all this (12 months ago) and also the vet said that would be his first job to test for UTI so on the first bout of blood the vet got a good sample strait from the bladder as he had the cathetar inserted and what came out was just blood red. He tested that and they found no crystals or no infection So the second bout of blood Cooper had ultra sound which also showed no crystals or stones on the same day we got a decent sample which looked clear and he wasn't straining to go and that was tested for infection and there was none. SO my boy is a bit of a mystery. Each time I have noticed him straining to go and there is blood it lasts about 4 days and then it goes away, so this has happened 3 times and the last time was when I noticed not only blood but kind of like a clot that had the consistancy of gritty dirt. The vet said it sounded like crystals and if I get another one to bring it in for testing but since then he has been fine! -
I love how you call him your little man. He is such a beautiful boy!!

Just wanted to mention also that I have read in a few spots that a dog with crystals should have a more wet/moist diet, so dry food is not neccessarily the best option, but this can be hard if dry is all they ill eat! -

Just for the record I think I said in the other thread my older boy Cooper is only 4 so definatley not old! Eagle pack is a dry food one of the premium brands cost around $30 for 3 kilos I initially changed Cooper to eagle pack as all of mine are on a meat & veg, raw bone, neck wing etc diet with small amount of dry food (supercoat) which suits fine only that Cooper is not so much fussy just doesn't seem to have an appetite hardly at all and getting him to eat is tough. He was only really eating the supercoat and I was not keen on him having that as his only food source, hence the change to eagle pack as a total diet for him, he does also eat chicken wings necks and raw meaty bones as well. So when his problem first started the vet did tests ultra sound etc but there was never a firm diagnosis to what the problem was the vet said he thought the most obvious was crystals and to monitor him to see how he goes, which I did and after the initial bout of blood for a few days all was good until about 2 months later he had the blood back it lasted for about 3 days and that was it. fast forward to a couple of weeks ago the blood started again. This came one month after I decided to change his diet to the eagle pack. My first initial thought was maybe the change in diet cause the crystals to come back?? I spoke to the vet and he said it was possibly a coincidence and could be nothing to do with diet. He also said to cut back on protien intake? But all the stuff I have read and on other advice it seems that a dog with crystals should have more protien and less grains. The vet also said he would be reluctant to put him on a perscription diet unless they had a positive diagnosis and then the crystal would have to be tested to see what type it was as the diets for different crystals are different. The vet said to me if I see another clot of blood to get it and bring it in as they will test it and see if the crystals are present. My theory....Cooper only eating a lot of grain based food and not a lot else, this is how he developed the crystals in the first place? I do feel the change of diet has maybe not caused the crystals but flaired up what ever is going on in there? I don't know how to explain it but it is a worry for sure. My solution for the time being is now I have cut back his eagle pack intake and mixed in half supercoat supplementing also with chicken wings or necks and he still has a couple of bones a week. I haven't seen any sign on blood for 8 days and I watch him and check him constantly so I can see whats going on. The blood is very noticable on him due to him being so light in color. I also spoke to the lady (Lexie) from the place that makes the Eagle pack and she was very helpful advising me on which she thought was the best food for CJ but as she said at the end of the day the vet is best to advise. This is hard however without a proper diagnosis. So for the tiem being we will just cruise along and monitor him and hope it doesn't reappear. SF, from what you have said I think your vet maybe hasty in saying you have to put Oscar on this perscribed diet for the rest of his life, I mean what was it $70 for 3 kilos who the heck can afford that as an ongoing cost. Have you got a positive diagnosis if it is crystals and if so what type they are?? Did you think about getting a second opinion?? Sorry If you have answered these last two questions, I haven't read every post. -
Great shots!! They look like they were having a ball...

21/52 I always have trouble deciding which pic to use if I have couple of nice ones. I love the second one but couldn't figure out how to take out the shed door lock I tryed but it looked awful and dodgy!! Anyway with Winter starting in a few days and the Pies needing some luck for the weekend was the inspiration for these shots!!

Well Linda, I hope by you blowing your stack some action is taken!! Good luck. Hey someone is having a Birthday tommorow, Mmmm wonder who that could be?????

Sunnyflower, I have read so many things about this and most of it similar, makes it hard when the vets info is so different. As far as the feeding goes, a lot of the web sites say that home cooked food is the best for this type of thing. My other 3 dogs are all on home made food and they do very well but Cooper has always been a fusser. I have had a number of people say that he just doesn't seem right but I have had him vet checked a lot and they never seem to find any problems till this has happened?? Anyway will just plod along and see how we go, seems all good now. Good luck with Oscar too!!

Very informative, some of it is a little contradictory to the vets advice to me, such as the part about the meat in the diet and the protien. Wat he said to me was to avoid to much protien. That also blows my theory totally out of the water as I changed CJ from a grain based cereal to a more protien based cereal and this seem to make the problem worse. I am more confused than ever. I also had a read of this site http://www.gopetsamerica.com/dog-health/bladder-stones.aspx which has similar info to the above, maybe my vet is not as up with it as he thinks he is??

I was under the impression that UTI's and Crystals in the bladder do not always go hand in hand?? When Cooper had the blood in his urine last year the first thing they tested for was a UTI and there was none.

I spoke to my vet today about this very thing. I have had trouble with my oldest boy with blood in his pee. It began about 12 months ago and I took him to the vet then catetarized him and drained his bladder which was mostly diluted blood and did a test for uti and no uti so then did an ultra sound and could see nothing. So we were to monitor him and keep an eye on him as the worst thing is if a crystal blocks the uretha they can be in all sorts of trouble. So we watched him closley and after a few days he came good and no more blood. Fast forward to this week, the blood reappeared and I spoke to the vet today and I told him that a month ago I changed Coopers Diet to eagle pack which he had been having the recommended amount every day and loving it, seems weird that it would present itself a month after a diet change from a bland diet of less quality dry food to a premium dry food. The vet said could be just coincidence but keep an eye on him and if I can get a sample with the blood in it they will test again. He was not prepared to perscribe a perscription diet with out a proper diagnosis as thier can be a few different reasons the crystals are caused by and each type needs different dietry requirments. Did your vet do an ultra sound? Did they say that they know which type of crystal it is? I told my vet that I had cut Coopers diet back to 1/2 eagle pack and 1/2 what he was on before and supplementing with chicken wings or necks, he was happy with that. He said the biggest things to avoid was too much protien and too much magnesium. So for us it is just a waiting game but I do feel that the issue for us was changing Coopers diet and it is tough as he has always been difficult to get to eat and seems to like the EP now I have had to change it again. It is a worry when they have health issues such as these when you don't get answers and everything seems to be a mystery, with Cooper there wasn't anything else the vet could do apart from exploritory surgery and he said that is really a last resort.
