  1. It doesn't matter where the product is sold, if someone is not inclined to read labels thoroughly, or to just wing it and see, then they will use it regardless. Some people simply do not listen or do not retain information even if they are given directions by Vet staff so what do you do. Advantix is a cat killer, I have more issues with it's Name being similar to Advantage and the packing being so similar than where the products can be sourced.
  2. You obviously have never had a dog that barks non stop Mantis Or lived next door to one I know there would be training to stop them if you are there, but what about when you are not there .???? To be honest I used to think that it seemed cruel, but since learning more about it and seeing dogs that would drive me insane I would prefer to have them debarked than PTS, Which some I am sure have been, brcause people couldnt stoip barking. When you walk around at shows and see dogs barking non stop and no noise, now I think OH my god what must that of been like to live with. LOL Besides it is like anything some dogs are worse than others. at anything . My girl isnt a barker but god forbid I leave anything around she shouldnt get to, its chewed up and YES she is a candidate for having her teeth all removed JUST joking of course NOT A bit of history on my boy. He suffers seperation anxiety, the reason I had to replace many doonas, couches, clothes etc. When I moved into a rental property, after two weeks I got a letter from the council, saying Kenny barked from the minute I left for work, until the minute I got home & being a big dog, he must have driven the neighbours nuts. So I went to my neighbours & said they should have told me earlier, so we could address the problem. Kenny hates water, so I bought a "super soaker" & put it on the bin in front of the side gate & told my neighbours whenever he barked, give him a spray, two days later, problem solved. There is always a way to stop a dog barking for nothing, a much better option than ripping their bark out. For a start, they do not RIP THE BARK out, obvious that you are actually quite uninformed as to how the procedure is carried out. Something worked for your dog that is just ducky, but for many dogs, the owners actually run out of options, it is too late once a neighbour has baited your dog or let it loose on the street, and this actually happens. Some people have neighbours who will not assist in any way, they simply want the dog gone. It is not cruel, and for many dogs it is life saving.
  3. Increase the quantity of food, give her lamb flaps, lamb offcuts etc. 1 cup of dry doesn't seem much for a GSD.
  4. OK so where do all of the hours of outdoor fun fit into your busy life? Certainly don't fit into mine. Di Everybody is different, I can make time to do what I want to do, not everyone is able to do this that is true I can take time during the day to do things I need to do, but by the same token at busy times I do it all in the dark. If I wasn't able to do that I wouldn't have the animals, that is my choice to live the way I do. Some people are able to make the time. You choose to make the time for your animals that is your choice, Many choose not to because they won't get out of bed to do the early walks or the late nights, they choose that, it can be done but many people are too soft and enjoy to sleep till the sun is up and not go outside when the weather isn't ideal, they in a lot of cases are the soft ones. I know people who work 9 - 4, 5 mins from home who cannot walk their dog because they don't get up before 8 and socialise after work, they don't make an effort for their dog, they shouldn't have a dog be it inside or outside. Because I can and do make time for the animals and I know others who do the same I don't believe that it is right to generalise and say that an outside dog will be deprived of human company and lonely. Not everyone who has outside dogs works all day or hides away in the house. Not all children spend the afternoons after school inside. We still do outdoor activities at night, if my dogs were outside dogs they would be involved with us at night and my OH and I are both able to be at home often during the day. My sons dog is outside he still gets lots of interaction during the day and at night, every situation is different.
  5. I'm at work by 7.30am :p
  6. Crisovar I notice that you live in Queensland where the weather is probably reasonable even in winter. Here in Melbourne you can go for two weeks without even seeing the sun, just day after day of cold, damp, drizzly weather, quite often it's foggy and doesn't clear until the afternoon and then it's dark by 5.30pm. I go out walking the dogs even when it's raining and most people think I'm crazy. Sometimes I think the majority of the population in Melbourne hibernate during winter It was 4 degrees here this morning and we had frost, the winds are quite bitter, we still have to go about our lives. The dogs want to be out and about, the grand kids wanted to cook sausages over a fire last night and slept in tents. A walk on the beach is invigorating, the dogs are still in and out of the waters edge. Maybe the general population of this country is far too soft, none of my European friends hibernate with their dogs during winter, dogs need exercise, most seem to love playing in the snow judging by the amount of photos and videos I get. A nation of softies we are becoming maybe? In summer my dogs are out and about at 5am, I have my first cup of tea out with the dogs, In winter we can stretch it to 6am if we are lucky but not often. The cold air seems to intensify smells and they are off and fossicking around happily when it is crunchy underfoot. Watching the steam rise off the horses when they start to appear along the fenceline as the sun comes up and listening to the dogs wrestling and running around on the frosty grass is the best time of day. Dogs are not sent to bed till after 8pm, after last walks, horses checked and the last ball tossed for the old boy who at 13 demands to play ball day & night. My son tells me that space in the dog park he uses is tight at 6am, and the walking paths still busy till around 8pm, so there are still some people who go outside. We might be in the minority though, what a waste of a beautiful country if everyone is huddled indoors.
  7. Even throughout winter ? Yes, even during winter, kids still play sports, people go for walks, visit the beach, gardening gets done, horses cared for, life goes on. I meant in the evening It's dark by 6pm.....I think MOST people would struggle to be outside in the cold with the dogs at that point. Really, well I guess they would struggle with most things that are normal here then.
  8. Even throughout winter ? And during a normal working week? Studies show most kids spend less and less time outside these days. What is different about a normal working week, outside chores still have to happen, gardening still has to happen animals still need exercise, children still play outside, unless we have all evolved into hermits. Life goes on work or no work, winter, spring, summer or autumn.
  9. Even throughout winter ? Yes, even during winter, kids still play sports, people go for walks, visit the beach, gardening gets done, horses cared for, life goes on.
  10. Some families actually spend a lot of time outdoors, I know we do, an outside dog with an active family that spends time outside would not necessarily be neglected or lonely. Fresh air and sunshine is actually good for everyone, that includes dogs.
  11. Sorry one of my pet hates is the broadcasting of the "off label" use of chemicals. It is dangerous and every year animals die because of it.
  12. Having just spent months helping clients deal with one of the nastiest flea plagues for a long time, I have to say that in some areas it seemed that only agent orange or a nuclear bomb would suffice. Fortnightly applications of Advantage combined with Capstar twice weekly for all pets, and thorough spraying of yards, homes and cars seems to have been successful.
  13. No matter what the ratings if your dog doesn't do well on the food it is crap.
  14. I have used Proplan Sensitive Skin & Stomach for quite a few years, with excellent results. The dogs love it, they look great too.
  15. I used Leo for years with no problems, I was quite miffed when it became unavailable. It is possible for any dog to have a reaction to any product that is used, I certainly wouldn't blame the product, just like humans animals can have allergies or sensitivities to an ingredient and react badly. I will certainly be giving the Milo a go.
  16. Drontal cat, or Milbemax for the kitties here and use a pill popper to keep your fingers out of harms way if they are inclined to be troublesome
  17. Latest research from a top Dermatologist Vet (can't remember name), is that plucking is a no go. It aggravates the capillaries and may cause irritation or infection. A lot of vets are moving with this information, as obviously they all read the same studies and there was a lecture given in the past 12 months on this in Sydney. Think yourself lucky that you have a vet who is open to new information. I've gone with a happy medium and none of my clients dogs have suffered since some of the ear hair has grown back. I would also steer clear of Epi Otic. I know one of Oz's top groomers (MG) no longer advocates plucking along with well known vets. I think you'll find this is the way that it goes over the next few years. I would say more and more new groomers won't pluck as this is the way they will be trained. I'm glad my Vet is old school then, I have always plucked (30 plus years) and will continue to do so. No ear problems here. Un plucked ears in a humid climate eeew. Like everything not everyone will agree, I do what works for me.
  18. Gee, you are lucky to find a vet like that mine just put $1000 at the bottom. O! I did get a smile. Could you let me know his address, you found a vet with the fire still in his/her belly. I have NO problems with the fees, but when it comes to the drugs, I don't trust them. EVERY single invoice I have received from vets (4 in total) have consult + drugs on them. And after having had a very sick dog I have seen a lot of invoices. You need detailed invoices for insurance claims anyway. My last one following a dog attack: Consult (std evening) $64.90 Medication Clavulox $53.60 (15 tabs) Clavulox Inj $29.80 (administered at my request and knowing price) Bandage $11.60 Dressing $.30 Professional fees Tissue Glue $49.95 (tube) Total - $210.15 I would be happy with that, I wonder how much the Clavulox (15 tabs) cost the vet in the first place? Does anyone know? Why does it matter to you what the Vet pays cost for the drug? the mark up covers labelling, dispensing, freight etc like any other product.
  19. You are banging your head against the proverbial wall here Fifi, they don't care if their Vet goes broke they will just move on to the next one.
  20. I think it all comes down to ethics, if the vet over charges the RRP on drugs, if there is a RRP on drugs, are they(vet) going to treat the animal SLOWLY? so they will need to use more drugs than normal. If you have a good relationship with a Vet that you trust then none of this is an issue is it? I have worked with many Vets and have never seen one drag out treatment to increase the cost to the client. To do so is unethical, yes, but that is not the reason for this thread, this thread is simply a bitch about the markup of drugs.
  21. Do any other retailers or service providers disclose their markup? The point of this thread is simply a good old bitch AFAIC.
  22. Good to see where your priorities are (not)! Forget the animal, eh? And the people who only consider costs when seeking treating for their pets are thinking of the animal
  23. Assuming the drug is also prescribed for human use and available at a pharmacy (and that's all we're discussing here - as far as I know chemists don't sell animal remedy only medication), why don't you just give them a prescription and tell them to get the drug themselves? Not all animal medications are available through a pharmacy, youmay be surprised to know that some are only registered for animal use, your fix it all plan has holes, try again.
  24. Next time I have to do a special rushed Friday afternoon drug order to obtain something urgent for a client that isn't normally on our shelves, when I neglect to add the weekend freight surcharge onto the account and don't charge for driving 12 km in to the freight depot at 6am to pick up the parcel because we don't get weekend delivery, I shall think of this thread.
