  1. Agree, though it is the difference between responsible ethical rescue and the cowboys. Ummm... responsible rescue can still have/run kennels Nic... T.
  2. Hall a bloody ool ya !!!!!!!!! My link But some of the things that are in that code of ethics could never be laws. Well met Steve... and apart from the references to the MDBA stuff, it's not all that hard to do all that is listed there. Methinks I likes your "ethics"... *grin* T.
  3. I was thinking about this last night, and thought wouldn't it be wonderful if, at a bare minimum that byb's had to health test the parent dogs for genetic diseases. - would stop a lot dead in their tracks  They should have something in place for byb'rs - even if it were to follow up ads to see if they had permits to breed(not sure about all councils- but certainly my council you must- but people ignore it...). What would stop them in their tracks is being pulled up and fined under the current laws requiring microchipping and vaccination of pups - not to mention selling them aged under 8 weeks. Not hard to find them - they are advertised all over places like Gumtree - get the rangers out there and fine them. The cost of vaccinating and microchipping an entire litter isn't cheap, and if hit by fines for not doing it, that will hit the hip pocket too. T.
  4. Ethics discussions are moot due to the fact that everybody seems to have a different standard for what they deem "ethical". Some people believe that having extremely invasive application forms asking for financial status, etc, is being "ethical" - some think rehoming dogs to people who can be at home 24/7 is "ethical" - and some who don't ask for that level of "commitment" is "ethical"... So what BASIC "rules" should we set down (amongst ourselves for now) that can be used as a yardstick for what is "ethical" and what isn't? If we may be heading for regulation of our "industry", it may be prudent to have these things worked out in advance, so we have something to put forward if/when the powers that be are looking into regulating us... T.
  5. An interesting read... thanks redangel! T.
  6. I've heard that your hubby has a lovely temperament, and isn't bad in the confirmation department either Tapua... *grin* T.
  7. There are breeders, and there are breeders... People breeding healthy and predictable dogs under a specific code of ethics on the one hand... and people pumping out all sorts of interesting crosses with cutesy "breed" names on the other. Which would you prefer to purchase a puppy from? I foster pups for rescue and see a lot of very interesting mixes that I wouldn't have chosen to create - but we don't have any difficulty finding good homes for them. I think there is room in society for all sorts of dogs, pure or crossed... but I'd love to see "breeders" of the latter regulated a little better. We have laws in place to ensure certain aspects of animal welfare, and others that require all animals in most states be microchipped and age appropriately vaccinated before sale - but what we don't see much of is those tasked with enforcing the current laws doing anything real to stamp out the illegal practices of BYB's or puppy farmers. I can remember back when you could look in the classifieds and see smallish numbers of FTGH pups and dogs - now all we are seeing is page upon page of idiotic made up names for these animals and exhorbitant price tags attached. People have seen a market for their idiotic purposely crossed animals and are trying to cash in on it... *sigh* T.
  8. This morning's update on the HP list is this pup has been sold... yay!! T.
  9. Unfortunately it doesn't work like that poochmad... the average Joe will associate their bad experience with "rescue" in general. It's a bit like how the Animal Rights people showing ONE breeder to be a bit "dodgy", and associating that as representative of ALL breeders. T.
  10. Anyone seen the latest pics posted of the kennels at STAR... BIG difference from the ones posted last Friday... here's hoping that the new kennel manager person can stay that motivated... T.
  11. So you're happy to sit back and be legislated into extinction due to the Animal Welfare crazies having a much louder voice than you have in the public sphere WreckitWhippet? T.
  12. All councils are really seeing is that PR activity has the pounds' dog kill stats down to new lows... and this is what the public has been haranguing them to do. This pretty major fact is why they continue to let PR take dogs - because once they are out of the pound, they are someone else's "problem"... The rescue "fraternity" are up in arms because some pretty big mistakes have been made along the way by PR, and that could bode not well for ALL rescue if enough people are the victims of irresponsible placings of dogs by PR. Joe Blow who approaches PR about adopting or fostering a dog think they are dealing with a RESCUE, not a broker... and PR are only solidifying that particular fact AFTER issues arise with placements. T.
  13. PCC33's due date was 18/1/2013... he can be on the euth list if they run out of room. Is listed as Male by the way... *grin* I am on the HP mailing list - PC33 does not appear to have had any interest by rescue or the public as yet. T.
  14. Jill... part of my job entails cleaning up viruses and nasties on computers. If you are within reasonable travelling distance from Riverwood, I'd be happy to come out and see what I can do to sort out your computer issues... all I ask in return is a nice cuppa and maybe a couple of Tim Tams... oh... and some JRT cuddles... *grin* T.
  15. The point of raising awareness is actually to counter the negative crap that is effectively trying to make the breeding of purebreds extinct WreckitWippet... T.
  16. It would be really great if they could travel to Sydney to broaden the range of dogs they get access to in this phase... *hint hint* T.
  17. It's funny how so many people who are dead against purebred breeders will clamour to buy something that looks purebred if it ends up in a pound or rescue... people DO still want purebred dogs, or at least something that LOOKS to be purebred... So what is the answer to raising people's awareness of reputable registered breeders? We all know that the anti-breeder advertising campaigns are making an impact - where is the other side of the story? How can we raise positive awareness of the joys of living with a well bred pedigreed dog? T.
  18. Happy Birthday Wilhelmina... and may there be many more with your beloved human.... T.
  19. I'd stick my hand up with 3 of my own dogs... but it's too far away... *sigh* T.
  20. OK - the "evidence" that PR/MN was behind in the rent for the property is dated September 2012... the fact that they haven't been terminated/evicted most likely means that the arrears were paid, no? What is also evident from the photos doing the rounds is that there is quite a bit of construction work going on there - and until that is completed, the place is going to look like a dump. I've yet to see any working kennel that is pristine at all times - and I've seen a few... The diarrhoea in the kennels could mean anything - all I hope is that the dogs producing such stools have been checked by a vet to find out the cause, and steps are being taken to rectify whatever has upset their digestive system so. The dogs in those kennels look outwardly healthy in all other respects though. I have seen dogs produce some very "interesting" forms of diarrhoea when their diet has changed - in fact one of our dogs will produce same if fed soft food like VIP roll or tinned food of most brand names for 2 days in a row - simply making sure he only gets high quality dry food soon sees the problem disappear. T.
  21. Try calling Dogtainers in Sydney - they have excellent service at a good price. We use them for all our long distance rescues. If you explain your circumstances, they may even knock some off the normal price. T.
  22. Buddy's story is being told far and wide Cazstaff... he definitely did not die in vain. I still weep for you, Leah, and Buddy whenever I read an update in this thread. T.
  23. Having run a couple of my own forums, I've yet to find an addon that could allow me to ban signups en masse... that would be so helpful for all the annoying advertising troll signups a board gets every day... What a board admin may do on occasion is to notice a large influx in new signups when some contentious subject may be being discussed on the forum... this could indicate a "rallying of the troops" from one side or another for the purpose of a "board war"... in those cases, banning from posting could happen to those mass signups.
