  1. Hi, Yes I will be getting a male. So I have been told that the bitch would come to us for an hour then will go. Hmmm have to say as a breeder I wouldn't be comfortable sending my girl to be mated with someone who didn't know what they were doing. So much can go wrong with matings and it's best to have an experienced person doing it. If I were you I'd be insisting on the breeder taking the male to do matings at their place.
  2. This kind of thing can lead to a lot of issues, especially if you want to breed and show the dog as well. I would be wanting to see a really good contract between both parties with a clear understanding of what is expected from which person like health testing, stud fee's etc, if the dog is to be shown who will take it, pay for the entries, how long will the dog be gone etc. It can work out well provided everyone knows where they stand. I have a bitch with me who is still technically owned by her breeder however we have an arrangement between us that works for both parties and we'e had no issues at all.
  3. I'd say if she's happy to go for a longer walk and isn't stiff the next day I'd keep letting her do them. My 14 yr old Lab has a very limited range these days and can only manage about 15 mins before he's too sore, the stiffness the next day is my biggest tell with him.
  4. I'm very lucky as I work shifts and my partner can change when he comes home so at most our dogs are left alone for a max of 5 hrs and they are in kennels down in my double garage during that time as we have some very strange neighbours who believe it's alright to feed my dogs their table scraps. I leave a radio on for them and the large roller door up so they get natural light and they either have a huge game of fetch or a walk before and after we get home (depending on times, weather etc) they're allowed inside once we're home. This goes for both our adults and babies. I'm a firm believer in starting how you mean to continue.
  5. I would suggest heading to one of the sydney shows coming up at orchard hills. There are bound to be plenty of shiba owners and breeders there you can chat to.
  6. Two of mine are often in other rooms. They hang out with us occasionally but mostly they're off doing their own thing. They're spitz's so being independent is fairly normal.
  7. Are they native ducks? Maybe WIRES would take them?
  8. I dont know....looks like a terrier mix with a skin condition to me.
  9. I think there is a huge difference between people who have genuine issues with dogs that cant deal with children or have difficult/unhealthy babies, who then carefully rehome their pet and those who simply refuse to see the reality of the situation and the poor dog gets tossed outside to rot or thrown away. I dont judge the first group but I sure as hell judge the second lot.
  10. I can't... It was never a consideration when my daughter was born. If you get a dog you are responsible for its life for the next 12-15 years. If you think there is a slight chance in that time that you will have a baby and can't have them live under the same roof then DONT GET THE DOG. It is all about responsibility and few people take the responsibility of dog ownership seriously. I totally agree and one of the first questions I ask my puppy people is, are you planning to have children and if you are how do you plan to deal with a puppy and a baby? There is no way in hell I will sell one of my puppies to someone who believes a dog is disposable.
  11. Have to say I agree. I get this a lot with the Samoyeds. People have heard that they're 'safe' with children and the things they allow their dogs and children do together makes my blood run cold sometimes. In the end they're a dog, a primitive one no less but because people feel that they're in the safe category they're not as vigilant. We really need to instil in puppy buyers that any dog can and will harm a child if the circumstances are right and no breed is automatically 'safe'.
  12. I've got a bitch here on co ownership with another breeder. Our girl will go back to her breeder for a litter and then come back to me. We've been friends for years and everything was clearly laid out in the beginning and we've had no issues at all. I also have the same deal with another friend of mine who got the pick bitch from my last litter, the little girl will come back to me for a litter and then go back to her family. If done correctly and everyone knows where they stand and what is expected then these situations can work out really well for everyone. Just make sure you go over everything and it's in writing before you take the dog.
  13. What exactly do you mean by the bolded part? Seriously what a rude post. Sorry I bothered. Have a nice day. Yes I'm curious as to who is being hypocritical here? This is a forum people dont always say what you want to hear and all we're doing is pointing out there might be more going on. If the dog is indeed neglected then fine, report it. You do whatever you want but you dont have to be rude about it. None of us were.
  14. This is exactly what has happened to my 14 yr old Lab. He's not as healthy as he once was and has lost a lot of weight despite being fed top food twice a day. I'd be pretty peeved if someone reported me when he is getting the best care possible for his issues. I would talk to your neighbour or at least leave them a note before reporting them but thats just me.
  15. You tried one person. I wouldnt base your entire opinion on the breeders in this country on one event. If you really want a BB keep at it.
  16. There are agility trials at CDC in Symonston on Saturday & Sunday but as Bjelkier said, the All Breeds shows are on at Epic Sat, Sun & Mon. I can't find out any info for the All Breeds show, just the Collies and Shelties show and the Agility. Do you have the times that it starts? Or a link with info? Here you are:
  17. I have to agree, that's not an easy list to fill.
  18. Labs do shed but I don't have to clean up after mine every day. Guess it depends onw what they think is too much shedding. How much dog experiance do your friends have, are they new to dogs in general?
  19. Actually, I had considered Havanese, but then the coat seemed troublesome. But I hadn't thought about clipping it; that makes a lot of sense. It seems there are two shows; Saturday is the Collie and Sheltie show at EPIC and I had forgotten about the all breeds show at Symonson. Who says nothing happens in Canberra? LOL Are you going to the shows? A Havanese clipped coat is super easy to care for and there are a couple of good breeders in the area who I'm sure would be happy to talk to you about their dogs. The all breeds shows are Sat,Sun and Monday and are at Epic as well. I will be there on sunday and monday as a handler only with the Havs and a Samoyed puppy I bred, I didn't enter any of my dogs.
  20. If you're interested in a smaller breed have a look at Havanese. Brilliant with families, friendly, trainable and have a coat like a Maltese. Most pet people keep them in a puppy clip that doesn't require too much work. It's an all breeds show in Canberra this weekend so you should see most of the breeds on your list.
  21. I dont think a Samoyed would be great unless you are prepared for more than one walk a day with a small yard and they can have high prey drive.
  22. If a Cav is too small than a Havanese will be as well. Shame, they're brilliant, robust little dogs and fit all your other criteria and there are two lovely breeders in Queanbeyan.
