I have a mixture out where I am, being in the country and all. There is your typical farm mutt of unknown heritage and they always seem to be hanging around peeving everyone off ;) Then we have the pedigree owners, I know on my road alone we have Mal's, Sibes, rotties, GSD, GR, Maltese, Weim, Sammies (other then my own), JS, German Spitz and a very old Kelpie. Further up we have Boxer and Stafford Reg breeders which is great Drive into town though and its sodding ooldes as far as the eye can see. I was thrilled the other day when I saw another Samoyed (offcause I did the crazy lady thing and stop the poor owner), having to know where she got the dog from and Reg Breeder ;)

REg breeder, may or may not be on DOL. I will always go Reg Breeder, I learnt my lesson with Lestat! I actually hope to keep one of my own home bred pups next but that wont be for awhile yet.

Indestructable Ideas For Watering The Dog
Bjelkier replied to Tilly's topic in General Dog Discussion
Old bath tub, works really well for our stallion who has a water fetish, if a full grown stallion (coming in at a good 16.5) can't tip it your dog wont be able too! We cemented the plug shut, a litte harder to clean out but it works. -
I'm a bit worried about this now. My 8 month old Samoyed, Buffy, just discovered upstairs of our house, and is always running up and down the stairs now. Her parents have really good hip scores though, so I think genes-wise she's fine, but I'd hate to stuff them up by letting her climb the stairs. Do you think it would be wise to put some kind of barrier to stop her doing this until she's a bit older? Everyone will have a different oppinion on this but my stance is going up a flight now and then is fine, running up and down is something I would be putting a stop to right away.

I agree, Kalaska have bred some beautiful dogs... Aussie is absoloutely stunning! What makes you say they are the best? I can see why toughgirl27 is coming from. Kalaska are currently on a roll with their dogs and have won a lot in the last couple of years, and if anyone has the claim to be the top of the pops it is them. They currently have a couple of very nice dogs out at them moment, and are doing well. But a little question I do ask anyone before making judgements, is how many puppies has any breeder knocked out to get those couple of nice dogs! So heres a question for all, including the new sammy people, an outside observation would be great. here it is: "What makes a top breeder of Samoyeds, or any breed in fact" Is it the number of champions or may be the number of champions compared to the amount of puppies knocked out? or exports or imports or other titles like obedience or hearding? the manerisism and professionalism? etc etc etc Personally I would say someone who is ethical and honnest with the buyer, does propper testing and is able to keep their breeding stock to what they believe is correct to the standard and not what is currently fashonable, look at the GSD, fashion gone horribly wrong! Number of champions, well..... thats a tricky one, just because someone has had many litters and only a few champions dosn't mean their dogs are no good and the same time dosn't mean they are good and a part of me would wonder why they had say 100 litters and only 10 chamions. Honnestly I would ask them, straight out. Is it perhaps because they never sold to show homes? Do they only show the dogs themselves and sell everything else on limited reg? Everything is subjective, however if I knew for a fact that someone bred 100 litters, sold 50 of those to show homes and only 5 ended up as chamions I would be a little suss. But I don't base my likes and dislikes on how highly titled a dog is or isnt, I base it one the lines of the dog, how I feel about how it looks and moves and the health tests results (and if possible, what the dog has thrown) Anyone can have a petrol champion but it's much harder to fake health tests. I don't take into account how many dogs they have imported - good for them, they have the money, anyone can bring in a dog Exports - well I see that as two things, one they know people over seas and two people are interested in their lines, dosn't mean they are any good though Other titles to me show that the dogs just arn't pretty and can infact work they way they were meant to, so I do like to see other titles on the dogs. Personally I would really like to get herding titles for mine and maybe some sledding work for them too. Mannerisims and Professionalism is always nice to have, it is a kind of business in the end anyway. Off cause some people out there don't have the best people skills or might not have the newest or the best stuff but that dosn't mean they arn't honnest and good to the breed.

It was nice to meet you Diva and your beautiful Borzoi! Keshwar this one is for you 'I have searched her and she has run out of Duck. She is no longer worthy of my attention."

Hi Trismunky all I can say is PM Icemist. He has been a breeder for a very long time and will be able to give you some good advice

I will be there with the Samoyeds

Although everyone says how hard these Spitz breeds are to train they always seem to forget to mention how very, very clever they are. Their intelligence is what makes them hard to train in the first place. Any breed of dog that has been encouraged to think for itself for thousands of years is going to be a challenge. As far as they are concerned humans are equals, not masters. I have no idea when he will grow out of this phase, could be a few years, a few weeks, could be never.

Even desexed dogs can react to a bitch in season, my Lab is all over my little girl at the moment, not that she cares, tart. He is an absolute ass when the girls are in season. It very well could be his age, young male mal will start pushing the boundries, they are a very strong willed breed. What kind of training do you do at home? He dosn't have to go to dog school to be trained, 10 mins in the backyard each day is much better then the occasional weekend.
-
Allie and Mistral are bathed before shows if they are looking a bit off white, however I will be showing Allie this weekend and not bathing her, she hasn't been bathed in about 4 weeks now, shows almost every weekend of that time. Her coat is perfectly clean and lovely I see no reason to remove all those wonderful natural oils if I don't have too, much better for the coat in the long run. Lestat never really gets bathed, if he stinks I dump him in but other wise he might get two a year at most. All house dogs with access to everything. The bedding I clean every fortnight or so because that does get a little feral.

Yep, got it approved recently. No litters just yet, Allie is only just on her first season at the moment but one day we very well might hear the pitta patta of little puppy feet

A Couple Of "household With Two Dogs" Questions ..
Bjelkier replied to a topic in General Dog Discussion
Well no not really In our house more dogs means less time doing other things. Dont regret it at all though,I love having a multi dog house. -
Well said Pip If anyone is interested in Samoyeds books I can highly reccomend the Savvy Samoyed, Pat Hill Goodrich. Written by breeders and judges is has been one of the best Sammie books I have read so far
-
Ok here are some examples for you between the dogs and bitches. In these two photos are my boy Mistral and his litter sister Star. Both dogs height is within the standard Now the next two pics are my dogs, Mistral my 2 yr old boy And Alchemy my 9 month old girl Allie is still young and has more filling out to do but she will never be as heavy as Mistral for two reasons. First being that she is a bitch and it is very important that the girls look like girls and she is from different lines. Mistral is very English looking were as Alchemy is more Italian. Both however are correct. Oh and this, just for cute value, Allie and Mist curled up when she was a baby

From an ethical, trusted and wellmeaning breeder; providing me with the best possible pet pup. ETA: Other then coat thickness, what noticeable differences are there in male and female sammoyeds? Could you please post some boy vs girl photos? thankyou. What Bindii said, girls should be finer and more delicate then the boys, smaller in height too. I will post some pics of my two when I get home tonight and that will show the difference between the sexes
-
I've spoken to the other half, and he said he's happy to consider a samoyed if the ones we meet are good enough. ;) Can anyone recommend any in SA, or would you recomend one interstate that would be really worth flying a pup interstate for if the quality is that much better ;) I breeder's site i was looking at said you must be prepared for digging, barking and pulling on leashes.. That this is common and expected. Even with training? Even with training it is something you need to be aware of possibly happening. Having said that this is a very trainable breed, the dogs in my boys (and some in my girls) pedigree have multiable obediance titles. neither of my dogs nuiance bark or dig and the only reason one of them pulls is lack of training on my behalf. If you are committed to training from the begining you have a much better chance of stopping this in the begining. which sex do you prefer? why? Before I got my girl I would have told you boys are the only way to go but Alchemy is the sweetest little thing in the world. I have found the boys to be more sookie and more willing to cuddle for ages but both sexes are equally loving. Is there a price difference male/female? Some breeders may charge different prices but I am unaware of any who do. Does coat condition or volume change if being desexed. The coat will probebly get thicker and fuller. Does coat stain after seasons? or are the girls generally good at keeping that clean? I have not seen a badly stained bitch due to seasons. Each dog off cause will be different but provided you are willing to put in a little work with stain removal if your girl is a little messy you should be fine. What age are samoyeds generally puppies for? I think it varies from dog to dog. My boy is a big baby and I really think will be for a long time were as my girl is very much an adult and she is only 9 months. I would say an approx age would be around 1 or 3 years. Is Samoyed theft common? Again its hard to say. I have herd of Sammies being stolen and I have herd of many other more common breeds being pinched too. Do pups need restricted play untill they are grown? This comes down to the owner and what the breeder says. I dont walk my pups before a year old and I do keep an eye on play. We try to limit the amount of jumping up on their back legs and sharpe twisting, stairs are also avoided. But I know other people who think differently. I say each to their own As for breeders there are a couple in SA but I know nothing of them or their dogs so cant recomend them. However there are most fantastic breeders in the country, I can suggest in no particular order: Kalaska in Vic Mezen in Vic Snerzok - in Vic (seeing a theme here ) Icemist - NSW (and a member here) Apolar - NSW

I have had the same problem with my Sammie boy Mistral, he's very healthy but always been skinny, his father is the same. After much trial and trying about 100 different foods I found that working or active formula helped but the best for him has been Nutro Lamb and Rice. No idea why but it works so I'm happy! He also gets Lamb necks, flaps and turkey necks too. I have finally got a bit of meat on him now and he's looking better then ever

This is a pic of Mistral and baby Alchemy. Notice in the left corner, under Mistys butt, is a small grey and white cat, Seti. And a puppy photo of Alchemy

Not a problem BP, happy to help. When I got my boy I never imagined I would fall so in love with them, they truely are one of the best breeds out there (I am a little bias )

Should a buyer be weary of a breeder selling entire litters on Main registration, or are Samoyed's generally not faulted enough to need to be on limited register? Now this is only my opinion but I would be a little wary of someone selling every pup on main reg. I fail to believe that every single pup in a litter is show quality and if it is, well lucky them but I will hold my own judgment till all the pups are grown and titled There are plenty of faults that can crop up in the Samoyed that stop it being shown. It's 8 weeks fine to pick up your samoyed pup, or should they stay with mum and siblings longer then this time? I think 8 weeks is fine to pick up the pup What about urine staining? any of that? And tear staining? Urine staining seems worse in bitches then dogs. I use a stain remover and a good quailty whitening shampoo and that does the trick. As for tear staining if the dog is healthy there should be no staining. Wat sort of brushes, conditioners and other coat care should you use? I use a collie comb for most of the work and a pin brish and slicker for volume and shape. I use plumb white for washing and sea breeze oil to keep the coat conditioned. Burning from hot dryers and the sun can be an issue and there are some good coat sunscreens out there. The coat is delicate and cool dryers should be used when drying. Also waych out for hot spots, always make sure the dog is totally dry. The under coat can stay wet for days and that can cause all kind of issues. Do they blow coat twice yearly for both sexes? Usually its only the bitches that drop twice a year but my boy has recently gone threw a huge coat change and dropped slowly over about 6 months
-
How would you describe them with cats and things in general? Children also? Mine live with four cats, a horse and two rats and we have no problems. The prey drive is there but provided the dog is raised with them and taught how to behave you should be fine. As for children the Samoyed is a childs best friend. They seem to have a natural instinct about how to be around kids. I don't have kiddies myself but my dogs have met many children and they are always calm and loving. Are breeders against having dew claws removed? if it was asked when teh litter was born, do you think they'd find it acceptable to ask? I'm really not sure about this one. Every Sammie I know has its front dew claws and don't really see a reason to remove them myself. Someone else might know the answer. Are they known to escape like huskies? please excuse my possible silliness in asking this; i've just never met a samoyed. They can be. This is a very intelligent breed and if a Sammie is left to rot in the backyard it will eventually start looking for ways to amuse itself and escaping is one of them. I have herd some very amusing stories of Samoyeds climbing along the roofs of houses and up into trees. Neither of mine have ever tried to escape. With the dog being white coated, is there any sight and hearing issues? I can't say I have herd much about hearing or sight issues. But thats not saying they are not out there, someone else might be able to answer this better then myself. What price range does one go for? Anywhere from about $900 to $1200 approx

I've just started walking her more and training her with her meals to try tire her out. No digging yesterday, but did a little bit this morning. I'll keep this up. Still too early to tell. Well its a good start Good luck. Spoke to soon. She's gone back to digging this evening... Damn. If this keeps us, definatly get someone in to have a look at her.

How hard is teh coat to keep clean? My dogs are shown so they are bathed somewhat more regularly then what the usual pet owner would require. Mistral has not been in the show ring for months now and hasn't been bathed for a number of months. He is a little less white then clean little Allie but most people think he still looks brilliant I would suggest a pet owner bath their Sammie once every few months. Does it stain easily from grass, mud etc? I am yet to have a grass stain on one of my dogs. They live in the house but are outside in the kennels and yard during the day rolling around and getting messy. Dirt seems to brush right out of them. Even if they have a mud bath (and they love it) allow the mud to dry and them simply brush out. The only thing I have found that will really stick in the coat is the red dirt we get here. How much coat difference is there between a bitch and a dog? Usually what you will find is the dogs have a bigger coat, more fur around the neck giving them an impressive ruff and long chest hair. The coat of a bitch is often a little softer then that of the dog. How long does the Samoyed generally live for? About 12 to 14 years Could the Samoyed live in warmer area along the beach? They cope fine. There are many Samoyeds in queensland and other hot places. The thick coat reflects the heat and acts as insulation in hot and cold weather. How much does a full grown adult weigh approx? My boy is about 25 kilo and he is almost 2 years old, so he still has about a year before he is mature. Does the breed have dew claws? are they removed if so? Both my dogs have their front dew claws How vocal are they? The breed can be very vocal! Neither of my dogs bark unless we have just gotten home, there is something to bark at (ie kangaroo, cow, someone has arrived at the house) or they are playing with each other (but that is more of a woo woo sound then a right out bark). Both dogs are quiet every other time. Each dog is different and each dog will respond to training differently but I highly suggest that if anyone is thinking of getting a Samoyed train the dog from the very moment you get it home, barking is not on. And a tried Samoyed is a happy and quiet Samoyed
