I suppose they are a delicate breed, and Feather is especially fine but when I think about it, she's pretty tough. She's almost 12 years old now and has probably run many 100's of ks at top speed without an injury so when I look at it like that she's doing OK. I will say, in my experience, most of the injuries my whippets have had, have been caused by high speed but considering the amount of running they do it's to be expected, and I still dont have to take them to the vet that often. I'm more guarded about their interactions with other dogs for fear of them being attacked than I am about worrying if they hurt themselves while running.

It's his "love to have you for dinner" look

She's snuggled up with Nurse Neko on the green chair now. The soapies and nana naps sound like the order of the day Perse, well, maybe some movies on iview instead. She's getting lots of cuddles, I'll give her some extras from DOLers.

dont farmers do that to sheep, or is that only in the movies. If they really do, I wonder if farm supply stores might sell them.

It's still early but so far Feather seems pretty good this morning. She was quiet overnight, didn't make a peep and Neko slept in the crate with her. When I let her out she had a big, but careful stretch, as if feeling her way to see if it hurt. Then she took herself outside for wees and poos and I watched from the window to see how she was moving. She trotted back in the house as normal. If she is in pain, I dont think it's very bad, not enough to warrant more meds. I'll be keeping her quiet for the next few days, I wont encourage her to run around, but I'll let her work out what she feels up to. I'm so relieved, I was sure I was going to have to have her put down yesterday so now I feel like I've won the lottery. Thankyou all for your concern and caring thoughts. If my little girl knew I'm sure she'd appreciate it.

I met this old Italian Greyhound a couple of weeks ago. She is 18 and quite spritely, even intiating play with my puppy Neko and her brother when they met.

One If My Dogs Has Been Hospitalised
Kirislin replied to Rascalmyshadow's topic in General Dog Discussion
OMG! look at him. I thought it was a poodle going by your siggy. He's so tiny and cute, what a little hero he is. -
What a star she is! That's fabulous news big congratulations to Reba, the puppies and you! What a relief.

I knew a beautiful cream chihuahua who was 21 years old, could still see and was so cute and friendly, everyone loved her. Sadly she was killed by another dog at a park.

TLC it is good to have somewhere to pour out my heart and anxieties when something like this happens and know that so many completely understand. Your experience did sound similar although Tully came good alot quicker, but that first sickening screaming in agony and thinking she's broken her back....Ugh I think Feather might be sore for a while yet. I'm happy to report that she ate all her dinner just now. I raised her bowl a bit so she didn't have to stretch to the floor to eat it. She then took herself outside for a toilet break and did 1's and 2's and then gingerly tottered back inside and has put herself back into the crate. She's such a good patient. She wont be happy when she finds out she's sleeping there tonight though but I dont want her jumping on and off the bed overnight and I cant be sure I'll wake up to lift her up and down if she needs to get off.

she's just laying quietly T, but I do find it unsettling that she still hasn't closed her eyes. It must be something to do with the drugs. She isn't crying or restless, just laying still but with these staring eyes. At the moment I doubt there's any more a vet would do for her. I offered her a little bit of food about an hour ago and she ate it which was good as she didn't get her breakfast. I'm OK, worried about her but OK.

thankyou all so much for your good wishes. It was so awful, at the time I thought she was going to die, I'm not kidding, I know I call them all whimpy whippets, but really they're so brave when they are seriously injured, I knew she wasn't just putting it on. She is now settled in the crate, I've left the door open and she got out for a while but has gone back in there of her own accord and seems more relaxed now. Her face looks a bit strange to me, but it might be the drugs, it almost looks as if she's had a stroke, but I suspect it's because her face muscles are relaxed from the morphine. Neko is being her faithful companion, laying in there by her side, although truth be told, it's probably just because she likes the crate. Rosetta I'd wanted him to do an xray too but when he explained that he didn't think it was called for because he doesn't think she's broken any bones in her back I could see his point. Tomorrow if I think she might have broken something in her chest I'll be hotfooting it back to request further examination and painkillers for her but I think for now she's better off here with me just resting. She would fret if she was kept in a cage at the clinic, they dont have it staffed on a Sunday. I'm so lucky our local clinic will even come in for AH emergencies, if I was in Melbourne I probably would have had to go to an emergency clinic and I think they pretty much charge over $1000 just to walk in the door.

he said it was morphine Kirty, would that be more long lasting? I hope so. She's stopped the whimpering for now and is stretched out in the crate, I cant see if her eyes are open, I'm hoping she's finally sleeping. She's definitely getting rest though, even if she's awake, she's not trembling or panting which is good.
-
I'll keep her as quiet as I can for today. I could imagine she might have done something like that, her chest looks odd to me but it might just be because she's standing all hunched, and as you say, even if she has, the treatment is rest, which is what she's getting. If she seems too sore tomorrow I'll be asking for more pain meds for her though.
-
I asked him why he didn't xray and he said she has feeling in her limbs and can stand and walk, so he doesn't thinks she's broken anything. He felt down her spine carefully, each vertebrae and said if she's got a bulging disc she would have swung around and sunk her teeth into him, although I cannot imagine Feather ever biting any human ever. She got up so I let her out of the crate. I think she wanted to get on my bed so I've shut the door, I dont want her jumping up there. I coaxed her outside to see if she wanted a wee but she just stood there all wobbly and then tottered back inside. She's stopped the whimpering for now, I've fluffed up the blankies in her crate and settled her back in there again, but with the door open. Neko's jumped in with her now. I'll let her stay as long as she doesn't start pestering Feather.

I do have rescue remedy! Do you think it would be OK to give on top of morphine and the anti inflam? When I picked her up I didn't think to ask about ongoing pain meds, and she's just started a rythmical whimpering now. a little whistling cry with each breath. I've never heard her cry in pain like this before.
-
yes he checked her fairly thoroughly. I asked if she might have internal injuries when we saw the bruise on her chest but he thinks it's unlikely because her colour was OK She went into shock almost immediately. As I was driving her home to ring the vet I had my hand on her and could feel she was cooler than normal, but by the time I was getting her to the vet her temp had gone up again. She's still just laying there with her eyes open, she hasn't moved since I put her in the crate. I think I'd feel alot happier if she closed her eyes and had a sleep, but the staring eyes are unsettling. My poor baby.

I like your loose scribbly style of drawing very much Gila.

someone could have scored themselves a fantastic camera because I every nearly left it on the walkway when I carried her to the car. It's the most sickening feeling when our beautiful dogs hurt themselves, so many thoughts rush through your head. She hasn't moved since I put her in the crate, but I can see she's awake, her eyes are open but I'm hoping she's in a drugged up haze and not feeling any pain right now.

After walking the dogs early yesterday and enjoying it so much I decided to do the same again today. We were up at the park by about 6.20am. I'd just let them all out of the car, no one else around so I didn't leash them. Everyone happy and excited, I had my camera with me and was looking at the lake, thinking how beautiful it looked with the mist rising off it when my little blue girl Feather went to jump back up onto the raised wooden walkway, but misjudged and hit it with her chest. She somersaulted over and landed in a screaming heap on the boards. She couldn't move and was clearly in agony. I picked her up and tried to get her to stand, but her legs just buckled. I got her back to the car, laying her on the front passenger seat. I never put them on there and normally she would have sat or stood up, but she just continued to lay there with bulging eyes. I am so lucky our local vet will see people after hours so by 7am she was in the vets. He gave her painkillers and kept her for about an hour, told me to go walk the rest of the dogs, which I have done. I've got her back home now in a crate. She's pretty spaced out. He doesn't think she's broken anything, there's a chance she's injured her spine but it's a bit of wait and see. I can see she's got a whopping bruise on her chest and right shoulder and has skun her mouth a bit too. Feather is almost 12 years old but is otherwise fit and healthy, I'm hoping she's got a few more happy years ahead of her, send her some healing vibes please.

Dog Owner Is Refusing To Have Her Pet Put Down – Even After It Savaged
Kirislin replied to Steph M's topic in In The News
If that woman really wants to own a dog it should be a toothless one. Clearly she's got no idea how to raise a healthy well balanced dog, really she'd be safer with a goldfish or a bunny rabbit. She gives dogs a bad name. -
sounds like it will be soon. What's her name?
