  1. I had a play with my Canon today in monochrome and wanted a very shallow depth of field. I put it on AV and twiddled the dial but the lowest I could get it to go was f4. What do I need to do to get it lower? I'm new to this. Linda
  2. Yesterday I was lucky enough to have my camera handy when I saw an eagle with prey being harrassed by magpies and crows. http://www.dolforums.com.au/index.php?showforum=17 It was all rather hurried and I never gave a thought to what settings the camera was on. Fortunately I got some pics but I was wondering if those clever ones here could check what it was set on and tell me if I could've changed the settings (if I'd had the presence of mind to do so) for better clearer photos.
  3. Entry level? when talking about cameras. I've never been sure I understood the term. Does it mean a good starting camera if you want to get into photography with hopes of going further?
  4. that's awful, poor girl but at least it sounds like it was quick for her. I am not sure if you know, you should check their pouch for young.
  5. Hahahah, I have a whippet like this, I call it his comb over. and sometimes he has the double comb over
  6. Just thought I'd post some pics of our April meeting. I didn't have this computer then so was unable to post the pics I'd taken with my new camera. Hopefully the weather will be as lovely as it was on that day. some of the crowd, there was more but it's hard to herd them all together, they're as bad as their whippets, heading off in all directions. this is the indoor, well, under roof section anyway. I think we have just about the best facilities you could want. waiting for their turn, looks like there's a ring in there too heading for the start rrrrrrrracing! and the winner is....um I dont know Feather running the wrong way down the track but it gives you an idea of how lovely it is.
  7. I am so glad I have this forum to ask these questions so thanks to everyone who's answered my previous ones. New question. I took some pics of a bloke and he wants copies. He doesn't have a computer but I can burn them on either a CD or a DVD and he can look at them on his telly via a DVD player?? correct?? Must I do it onto a DVD or can he watch them on a CD. This is probably painfully obvious to you clever ones but if I dont ask I wont know. Oh yeah, how do I tell the difference between a CD and a DVD just by looking at them, do they look different? No laughing please.
  8. Yep, already using photobucket but even there, they're not as detailed as on my computer file.
  9. I love taking pics and being able to send them to friends but when I email them they are never as detailed as they are on my computer. How do I send the really clear detailed image?
  10. Thankyou THANKYOU to everyone who's suggested things for me to try. I've started pressing buttons and worked out the continous shooting in manual as opposed to the auto sports mode. I took some pics today, changed the shutter speed and ISO and they worked. I'll post them in the "dog walking" thread I started but I can see an improvement in the still shots. The ones of Razor the black Amstaff were taken today. so again, THANKYOU!!
  11. Hello Members and friends! we're back after the winter break and hope you are all as keen as we are to shake off the winter blues and get some cool mountain air into those whippet lungs. Our next fun day will be Sept 21st. We hope to start at 11.30 but there is just a chance that the greyhounds wont be finished trialling. It's not something we can control, so if there are still greyhounds around when you arrive, please keep your whippet/s in the car. Also please make sure you keep your whippets on a leash at all times unless they are actually running. As per usual we will have the barbie fired up, soft drinks for sale and complimentary tea and coffee. And please, dont forget to buy some tickets for our raffle there's some really lovely prizes. We are located at Healesville Greyhound Track, Don rd Healesville, Melways ref 278 H5 enter the sports complex by the 2nd (southern most) gateway. Let us know if your whippet has never chased a lure before and we will try to put it with some who know what to do. We will just be having fun runs so dont worry if your whippet doesn't chase. It's just meant to be a fun day. Oh! and dont forget to bring your camera! Some Ground Rules *only 1 dog per handler. You cannot take more than one dog onto the track. If you need help just ask. *pick up your dogs poo. We will have bags available for free. We are guests at this track and the whippets are allowed to go where the Greyhounds aren't, but we need to make sure they dont leave unwelcome deposits all over the grass for punters to step in. * To retrieve your whippet once it's run you have to walk on the outside of the cyclone wire fence. Yes, I know it's the long way round but for safety reasons we cannot have people walking on the inside or worse, on the actual track. It's Greyhound track management rules but we agree with them. Helpers! We always need more as there's only 5, sometimes 6 of us to run these days. If you want to help in any way please let us know. Things we might need are, a cook for the barbie, people to help in the catching pen and maybe someone to sell raffle tickets. AGM We will be having our AGM at the start of the November fun day (it shouldn't take long) and if any members would like to be part of our fledgling club this is your chance to get on the committee. I ask all members to please consider it. If I've forgotten anything or you have any questions just email me. y v w r c @ hotmail . com (leave out the spaces) Hope to see you all on the 21st. 13. How's he going now? Hope there's an improvment.
  14. I think it was fully zoomed out. I know I just have to really apply myself and start learning what's what. there's no easy fix. I just wish I could wake up one morning and have this inbuilt understanding. Like the good camera fairy touched me with her magic wand while I was sleeping.
  15. I do read the Instrucion manual but I am ashamed to say I kinda feel my eyes, and mind for that matter glazing over when trying to understand it all. I am going to look into a camera course because I want to get the most out of this monster, it's not gonna beat me, well, not just yet.
  16. can you explain the * button to me. I just had a look and I pressed it and I could see the symbol in the viewfinder window thingy but what does it do.
  17. I'm such a duffer, and I didn't explain it very well. I've gone out an had another play and it's that one part is the zoom in and out and the other is the focus, it's just that because I have never got the damn thing out of auto I didn't even know about it. None of my pics today were very good but at least it's not a old film camera that I'd have to pay for rolls of failed shots and wait a week before I found out they didn't work. KJA is yours a Canon?
  18. Thanks Tess, it's a lovely day here today so I might go and practice at the park. Kymbo I have the instruction manual but sometimes it doesn't explain enough for me. I wish I could ask it questions and it could answer. for example, I've just yesterday discovered something on the long tele lens that I didn't know was there! It's an extra focussing ring on the end. I dont know what you call it but it seems to fine tune the focus and change the depth of field. there is no mentio of it in the manual cause the manual doesn't really talk about the lenses. I think they assume a certain level of knowledge and understanding that I just dont have. Linda
  19. Thankyou, even though it is my technique which needs work I am relieved, I'd rather that than the camera be dodgy. I can learn and improve. I didn't know that about the camera setting details. I had it set on full auto (sports mode) so it did what it wanted to do. I am not sure if I can dictate which areas focus but still keep it in auto.
  20. What do you mean, how do you tell? I dont know what exif is. you have to spell it out to me
  21. Um how did you know all that? all the camera settings my photos were taken on? I am a computer dummy as well as a camera dummy! I need to hire you for the day for onsite instruction. Hey, now there's a thought!! A DOL photography day!
  22. I am struggling to get good shots with my Canon 400d even on auto sports mode. Yesterday I went to the beach and tried to get some good shots using the sports mode. I thought the camera was supposed to automatically focus itself as the subject was moving. I took tons and alot are blurry. I am feeling very disheartened this was taken using the long lens and I thought maybe there was just too much for the camera to focus on and maybe it was too far away. some were of Lily running towards me and the camera just wasnt refocussing, is it supposed to or am I expecting too much. what am I doing wrong?
  23. the mother of one of my whippets had a problem with a salivary gland and although I never actually saw it when it was swollen that's the first thing I thought of too when I saw this heading. I think her owner had to get it drained and then anti biotics for her.
  24. Yep, it's certainly worth keeping in mind, especially if our $$ takes off again like it was a few weeks ago.
