  1. Thanks, Steve It's just really disheartening and downright scary. If anyone is wondering where I found the info about dewclaws, it's on the DPI Vic website, in the Code of Practice for the Private Keeping of Dogs, under the 'surgical procedures' section. I'm still tryin to locate it in the Act but at work and tryingto be sneaky about it.
  2. It really is the beginning of the end, isn't it???? I recall a Mini Schnauzer being clipped off and it had rear dew claws.... That went by unnoticed by the groomed until the clippers caught and the blood came they should have been removed at birth. I'm not opposed to paying a vet to do my puppies but I AM opposed to being forced to do it, potentially exposing my precious babes to disease and the possibility the vet has no real experience in doing it. That is if I can even find a vet..... It could involve a car ride of several hours, not something I wan to do with 3 day olds My bitch is due in season in a few weeks, I was looking at mating her again but now I'm not so sure.
  3. Yes, me too. As long as you put the training in, you'll almost certainly title the dog on the day. And it's a sensational day out. I was a bit disappointed when I went to club training a week or so later and told my instructor we'd done the ET. He said "ET? That's not a title! Anyone can get an ET!" I looked at around at everyone else there and said "So why were there only 19 dogs in the trial?" And I've since spoken to heaps of people who won't even attempt it ebcause they think they wouldn't be able to do it. I have arthritis in my knees so it's upto them if I can make the distance lol. And as the trials are conducted in winter, the pain & inflammation is at it's worst I could do it hopped up on painkillers but I'd be so doped that it could be dangerous LMAO. The dog has no problem whatsoever. And it's not the distance so much - on a good day I can do it easily but other days I can't make 2k. So annoying. But the dog deserves to be titled so I'll suck it up next year and have aback up handler
  4. Everyone stuffs up occasionally. Whats annoying is when it is the same people, week in week out who should know better (I think there should be a rule that each dog has it's own lead grr. How do these people handle challenge lineups???), who make everyone stand around waiting for them to get their act together. My bitch occasionally cocks her leg! Now THAT is mortifying. If it happens on someones property I apologize and clean it up. Most people just laugh at her though!
  5. People who have forgotten what it's like to be a newbie and still learning. People who have forgotten how to be a decent human being and treat others with respect.
  6. I'm expecting a full report on Group 2 (Borders please ) AND a report on how you get there in the morning Good luck :p Sure thing! I expect the same for Saturday Of course! Although I assume you will be wanting the Jack results ratherthan the BTs? ;) No worries if you dont get the results- who's entered is usually enough although I'm not sure if anyone will be..... But anyway. Kick butt goo Gwen.
  7. I am biking Dusty next year, then Isaak will be old enough the year after. I absolutely LOVED doing the ET with Benson, it was such a buzz to complete it after months of training, and get that title. Hopefully I will have all 3 dogs ET titles in a couple of years. When we did Bensons, there were two Border Terriers in the line up. They handled it with ease, they are great little dogs for endurance. That would have been Indi & Archie Indi is Caber's full sister and Ziva's mum! She completed the test about 3 months after having 5 babies. Archie is a cousin of sorts lol. 2 years earlier Caber's dad did it, I understand he was the first BT in Victoria to gain the title. We have a family name to live upto I have no doubt Caber can do it, and we were entered this year and last year but I am having trouble making the distance. I am desperate to handle myself but as he is getting older, if I can't do it in 2011 he will be handled by a friend. I have no desire to wrestle Ziva's into doing it- trotting along nicely is just not her thing. We are doing tracking instead. Plus, I wouldn't trust the Bitch not to trip me up. She is evil It's a great title for a Border to get as it is basically what they were bred to do (alongside a horse lol not bike). I thinks it's one of the nicest titles out there, too. The idea of riding along with the dog beside you is just lovely!
  8. No, you have missed nothing, as far aw I know anywho. But, there are those receptionists at some vet surgeries will tell you "We dont remove dewclaws on pups here". They say it as a form of mutilation and this is the general feeling that is passed on to new vet nursing recruits I am told. The vets themselves WILL do it, 9 times out of 10. It is pathetic when you have to get past the receptionist and ask the vet but that is the way it is. I suppose they feel that if they keep up their PETA mantra and keep on bullying people out of having it done, most people will THINK there is a law against it, when there is not. Souff Unfortunately, it looks like I DID miss something Under the DPI (Vic) regulations, dewclaws may only be removed by a veterinarian. So at least we can still do it, but..... now to find a vet who will as you say, do it and be, who KNOWS how to do it. Gonna say here and now, if there is anyone in Victoria who hasn't read the DPI website and all publications/links relating to dogs & cats in Victoria - do it as soon as you can and take notes because any one of us could be next Are you kidding me- when were they going to let us know - when the first charges were laid? No fricken' idea! I will find the exact legislation tomorrow (if you haven't already, I'm about to go to bed). I had to read and re-read as when I had my litter I checked and triple checked what the legislation was. Definitely something that NEEDS to be out there so that people know. Erny- I would rather trust a breeder with hands on experience over a clinically trained veterinarian to touch my babies any day. Not to mention the risk that is incurred taking the litter to a vet clinic to be done. One thing I am still unclear on is, can we still have our dogs debarked interstate as long as we don't exhibit in Victoria?
  9. I was lucky- my boy took to it like a duck to water without any specific training. He has always been excellent to walk on lead though and knows commands like slow, fast, left & right, stop, heel and 'out wide'. I have him about 3-4 foot away from my bike (lead in hand), and at a steady trot but if someone is coming on the path I have him 'in close' where he is as close as possible to the bike. Absolutely love riding with my boy and hope you get the same enjoyment!! Hopefully next year will get around to doing our ET (he is 6 and a half so it's almost our last chance). Dunno if I'll bother with my older birch..... I think that might be dangerous lol. But would like to bike my puppy when she is older- she is very similar to Caber in how she behaves on walks etc.
  10. I'm voting after work tomorrow lol. Mum already voted today. No way trying to find a park with the trailer and knowing us we'll detour on the way home
  11. I'm expecting a full report on Group 2 (Borders please ) AND a report on how you get there in the morning Good luck ;)
  12. Unfortunately, it's very much a 'toothless tiger' situation at present. If you break a rule, you get punished. It can be a warning, fine, suspension of membership or a combination of these things. This is for Vic at least. Every month you see familiar names come up in the gazette as being disciplined over some action or another, but nothing more serious is ever done. In some cases a single person or kennel can have multiple 'charges' however they get a mere slap on the wrist.
  13. If your in Werribee your already on the Daylesford side ☻ Head towards Bacchus Marsh, you know out the back road that turns onto "Bacchus Marsh Rd....go into the Marsh then turn left onto hwy then turn off at the Ballan exit go thru Ballan then go right back over the hwy follow this all the way to Daylesford, Victoria Park on the left. Cool thanks for that- looking at it now and it looks a lot easier and more direct. Maybe take an hour or so I'm thinking (it's 45 to Kyneton).
  14. Which then means you officially own the dogs, which IMO isn't fair on the owner. Why do they not have the right to have their pet (which no doubt has cost a lot of money), in their own name in their country of residence? And as shortstep points out, the dogs cannot be registered even for non-conformation events in the country they reside in. Also, isn't it against the code of ethics to sell a puppy and not provide the registration papers??
  15. We're in Werribee so will be using the Princes/Ring Rd then the Calder. Thanks for the instructions! Looking at them on a map now.
  16. Go through Kyneton or past it? Sorry, I've never been (except camping once years ago). Is the ground hard to find? Looking at a map but often find the 'locals' know where to go
  17. Because the ANKC says so. Yes it restricts an ANKC breeder for selling a dog they want to place on limited to an overseas home if they want to provide transferable limited papers. But the law will not see it as restraint of trade, you can still sell your puppy, you just won't do it with ANKC limited transferable papers. Your choice is yours to belong to the club and follow their rules or not. BTW almost all countires now have limited rego, so this could be done if the clubs wanted to do it. I think dogs back and forth from AKC to CKC on limited. Not sure about the UK. And there are several other registeres outside kennel club that have international recognition of other clubs limited rego for transfers. Why not, let people join the club and do activies, the dog is purebred, it is just not for breeding or show ring. So, they can do something when they feel like it. I'm surprised at this, though, because the CCs would get money from the exports. And that's what it's about, isn't it. Moneygrubbing. Exactly. I just don't see the difference (in terms of Federal restriction of trade), in exporting a dog with Main or Limited register? It's just a smokescreen, an excuse to keep raking in the $$$$$.
  18. Eep. Should we get theresuper early? Like 7am?? How long a drive would it be from the Ring Road (Princes fwy entrance)
  19. Why can't you export Limited Register puppies? And how does this impact on pet owners emigrating or breeders who have both limited and main dogs? Is that not a restriction of trade??
  20. I am INCREDIBLY grateful to my chosen breeder for entrusting me- but I did start the slow way with a dog rather than a bitch. However was rewarded with my bitch who in turn gave me a wonderful litter. All but mine desexed pets but I would not hesitate to consider a request for a show puppy in the future. Yes it is a huge risk and each to their own but at the same time..... What happens when all the breeders get old and die with no one to take over?? Not only that but people with fresh eyes can be of benefit as they do not have a preconception of what's the perfect specimen or have not been blinded by type etc.
  21. As long as they are PIAA accredited, breeders can sell to pet shops and wholesalers. Code of Ethics for dogsnsw A Member shall not: (a) sell any dog to commercial dog wholesalers or retail pet dealers, who are not accredited by the Pet Industry Association of Australia Limited (PIAA). I dont know what their process is if a breeder is caught selling to non PIAA members Sorry meant to say other than PIAA stores, was about to head in the tunnel on the train and typing in a rush lol. Have to agree with RSG though, probably do nothing. Which begs the question, why bother with the rule if it's not going to be enforced?? because everyone screams for more rules so in order to be seen as doing something crappy rules and laws are made then we suffer the consequences. thats why i dont want any more rules because we will just get a lot of nonsense ones. we really need the current rules fixed before new ones are made I don't want more rules, either. Honestly, the exportation of puppies doesnt bother me so (I have no proof that they are going to poor homes etc), but I am bothered by the fact that these rules and regulations mean nothing. CAN the CC suspend a person's membership (legally) if they are found to be doing the wrong thing (in relation to the Code of Ethics) Ie selling to non-PIAA pet stores or exporting via an agent? Maybe what we need is a mass exodus from the state CCs. Everyone who wants to see the CCs step up and enforce the rules currently in place drop their membership for one year..... See who remains on the books then. Okay so it wouldn't happen and I would absolutely die without shows for 12 months but it would be an interesting experiment!

  23. I'm not quite sure WHY the ANKC cannot place restrictions on things like exporting entire litters - it is a voluntary organisation, people are not forced to join. If they don't want to abide by the rules and regulations, they have no place being part of the membership. Because its the Federal law - restriction of trade. Can the ANKC refuse to sign off on the exportation application so they cannot be sent overseas with their papers? The state CCs make lots and lots of money from export certificates and usually by the time the applications go in for the certificate the puppies are long gone. Puppies are exported at 8 weeks but CC wont issue the certificate until they are 12 weeks. All puppies that go out are under AQIS regs so on what grounds would the CC stop issuing an export certificate? Whats more the new owner can ask for an export certificate anyway - stopping the breeder being issued with them wont get us anywhere. people only need a CC issued export certificate anyway if they intend showing or breeding. Stopping them being issued for pet shop puppies isnt going to make a scrap of difference. No matter what box the breeder ticks you cant stop an owner taking their dogs overseas. History tells us that when the CC even listed the exports each month in NSW they all moved to have export certs done via the ACT.These puppies arent going out with boxes ticked for no export the breeders want them exported . You cant stop that. Thanks for the more detailed answer- like I said, I've not exported before or really thought about it. Makes you wonder what the point of all our $$$ is if they can't do anything to protect the dogs or even our sport. I can see why people grow disillusioned and drop off the membership whilst still breeding. Perhaps a higher fee for the processing of the export application? So it's sounding like there is little the ANKC or state CCs can do regarding restriction of trade but surely they can introduce monetary penalties for those doing the wrong thing? On that note, do they have a process for members found selling to pet stores?

If they don't want to abide by the rules and regulations, they have no place being part of the membership. Because its the Federal law - restriction of trade. Can the ANKC refuse to sign off on the exportation application so they cannot be sent overseas with their papers? The breeder marks the box not for excport, then no pedigre will be given for export. This will not stop the dog from being exported but it will not have any registration from ANKC going with it for a transfer. Yep I know the breeder can tick the box but is there any avenue for the CC to refuse to process the export? I have not exported a dog so may be a silly question, sorry, but the CCs obviously process the export certificates as they print them in the gazette? Okay, if Federal restriction of trade trumps ANKC rules & regs, can the ANKC reprimand someone for exporting an entire litter as they do if someone breeds a bitch under 12 months or more than 2 times in 18 months etc?
