  1. You weren't there, you don't know my dogs or their relationship, so what you would do in such a situation isn't really relevant. Well if you don't want anyone to comment on what you say, or your situation or your dogs, then don't post at all - what you have said is not relevant, is it? If you don't think one dog attacking another in the way you describe isn't horrific, that is your business. If one of my dogs decided to get one of my other dogs by the throat in the way you have described and I chose to put my own dog to sleep, that is my business. *deleted on request* And I believe what I posted WAS relevant as it is a similar occurance to what happend to the OP and we have the dogs back to being best mates again so it's not always 'the end' of the relationship.
  2. Well put it this way ..... I didn't vote for the Sex Party. Although I guess one could say that their policies could serve to enhance every day living, lol. I did I think most of their policies are actually fantastic! Shame many are unrealistic for Victoria but I can dream..... And yes, I know they preferenced Liberal. So I can sleep at night I didn't vote directly Liberal (couldn't do it, wouldn't do it. Ever).
  3. You weren't there, you don't know my dogs or their relationship, so what you would do in such a situation isn't really relevant. ETA the only reason it was so serious was because of the size difference and if we didn't have Caber & Casey bouncing around like dickheads trying to PLAY it would have been easier to separate them. You should see the two now! Cuddled up in a wee ball (and all bruises/wounds completely healed up with no scarring).
  4. Nothing. But Labor has proven itself time over to (a) bring in dog laws that are unfair, unjust, sometimes unworkable and sometimes just downright silly and (b) to not listen to the people who put up excellent reasons as to why those laws are unfair, unjust, unworkable and just downright silly. So might as well give the other party a chance to prove itself. I just hope it's not at the expense of everyday living
  5. *deleted on request* It IS horrible and I can certainly understand rehoming the little guy (and in all honesty, finding a good home for an elderly fox terrier is going to be a lot easier than an Akita!!), but I wouldn't feel too bad about it. It's just extremely unfortunate when the dogs involved are of opposing sizes.
  6. Siks3, I'm sorry about your fathers little Foxie and you are right about two male dogs..especially if they have not grown together...........but as soon as I saw Akita.....it didn't surprize me. Now before everyone pounces on me.......I have known dozens of Akita's in the past through friends having them as well as being at Akita shows when the breed was very popular.......and I have not met ONE I would trust. They are a big powerful breed with very few having good temperament with other dogs and sometimes with people. I think it is very sad you have to give the Foxie away....especially as he is an old dog and has had the trauma of loosing his owner (your father).......and now he is about to lose you too in being re housed with someone else. Sad situation all round. I disagree with your male dog perspective Tapferhund, the males growing up together from pups are more likely to fight in my experience than an older/younger combination. Akitas are not a whole lot different to working line GSD's, Rottys, Malinois, Dutch Shepherds and some Bull breeds that have genetic fighting drive, more than likely you are comparing more classical Akita's with watered down pet versions of the breeds I mentioned. Any breed with genetic fighting drive if pushed too hard with bullying or being shoved around unfairly will defend themselves and make a good job of it, lets not put Akita's in the traditional Pit Bull charade with more unsubstantiated comments of negativity based on breed. Well I disagree with your perspective 55C ! In my experience same litter males growing up together , same litter females growing up together are less likely to fight than bringing two older male or female dogs together and expect them to live happily together.......although I have this situation too.....with no problem. I have had up to five entire males run together...even when I have had bitches in season ...and all with no problem. It comes down to leadership by the owner imo. The only time I would separate was when no one was at home. Other than that they all lived happily together. The OP had an old small dog and a younger (I'm assuming) larger dog. So do you honestly believe an old dog would be annoying (bullying) the younger dog? Truth be known the poor old foxie didn't want to be bothered with the Akita continually annoying it . As for your comments that Akitas are not a whole lot different to the working breeds you have mentioned......along with these breeds having genetic 'fighting drive'....... .........what a load of codswallop !!!!!!!!!!! Akita's were bred to hunt bear as well as other large wild animals....whereas each and everyone of those working breeds were bred to herd! Quote from an Akita website. Perhaps if the OP had done some research on his chosen breed the poor foxie might have been spared from being mauled. The Akita Inu have a reputation for sometimes being aggressive towards smaller animals or other dogs, particularly those of the same sex. Why?? What did the OP do wrong? They appear to have chosen their Akita prior to being lumped with this smaller dog, what should they hav done? Dumped their Akita when the little dog came along???
  7. Huh? Report me if you think I hijacked the thread. I don't think it was a hijack but more a natural progression of the topic however you implied that I was focusing on the wrong thing. And why would I report someone for hijacking a thread?? That's a little childish isn't it? Onto topic - we had our breed club fun day. Was good but due to the weather we only had a handful of Borders (as well as a smooth collie and 2 mongrels), and we didn't do our usual walk to the lake which always attracts attention (25 or so Borders marching along will do that!). However one thing that stood out to me was many of the pets were overweight. Which is unfortunate because not only is it unhealthy but it gives a negative image of the breed IMO.
  8. Are you talking about Terriers or Collies? I'm not aware of any Terriers in Aus who are fortunate enough to hunt with a hound pack. oh i am an immigrant from scotland so i have seen borders working there eta in the late 60's early 70's Ooooh jealous much????? I believe even there they aren't allowed to work much. Stupid animal rights freaks. I did enquire about running with a registered hound pack here but they wouldn't accept terriers grr. Sorry, didn't mean to sound rude or make it sound like I thought you were stupid, just needed to clarify as I get 'collie' all the damn time LOL.
  9. Thanks, Weis! Wish I'd entered LOL although my girl would have been against Gwen :D CONGRATS on her unofficial title we still have 88 to go. Im spewing that it's nor gonna happen..... Next puppy and yay for another Fringie
  10. It's not about beauty -v- ugly. It's about a dog that's well put together. Can we focus on that? A well bred dog. The dog in my example is obviously not well bred because anyone can see he was put together wrong. Seeing a dog put together right is something to be proud of. You introduced the ugly vs beautiful issue with your analogy  I'm glad that it's ok for you to derail the topic but not okay for others to to the same.
  11. Are you talking about Terriers or Collies? I'm not aware of any Terriers in Aus who are fortunate enough to hunt with a hound pack.
  12. Does nurture (training and upbringing) have anything to do with this 'presence'? Will a beautifully bred, stunningly conformed purebred dog that has been neglected in socialisation and training sense still have this presence? Surely presence must be the amalgam of a number of variables including the owner? This beautifully bred, stunningly conformed purebred dog under the care of High Lady Froolaloo will probably fare quite differently the hands of Mr. Chopper Boganhead or is this je ne sais quoi presence to which you refer arise purely out of the breeding? does it matter? i dont think so, imo what really matters is that well bred dogs are great for promoting pure bred dogs...nothing wrong with that and that's what this thread is about  I think it DOES matter- if the dog doesn't have self-confidence and hold it's head high, instead slinking around as though the sky is falling- it's pedigree and conformation are a non issue and it fails to catch your eye unless you are specifically looking for something in that dog.
  13. Sure for sure. There is a staffy x pug in my local dog park. He turns heads every time he's there - the ugliest bloody thing you've ever seen in your life. His owner loves him and thinks he's beautiful and he gets great care so that's all that matters, but I've driven by with non doggy friends who have all said the same thing - shit that is ugly. They also point out other dogs and say - that's really beautiful! They wouldnt have a clue why one dog strikes them as shit ugly and another strikes them as really stunning. That's when it's our job to have a chat about well bred animals. A lot of people think Bulldogs are ugly, Chinese Cresteds, Greyhounds etc. Ive had people say to my face how ugly my Borders are and they are all well bred, move beautifully and are in show coat. Beauty vs ugly is subjective IMO. People used to tell me how amazing my Dobe x looked and wanted to know what breed she was, occasionally had ppl stop their cars to ask. Likewise our kelpie x whippet, some people weredrawn to her. I agree we need to get our well bred dogs out there but I wouldn't go as far as to say people cannot be as impressed by a mongrel as a pure bred. are they blind borders are beautiful!!! on a serious note, i think that by luck and chance some cross breeds can look amazing and can move beautifully so its not just pure breds that can do this BUT in my experience it is a very rare thing for a cross bred to have amazing conformation. i think there is more chance to have a pure bred that has good conformation than it is a cross bred. for me, this has nothing to do with how much they are loved or how good a cross bred is as a pet, its about grace and beauty and conforming to type. I agree with you, but I found the comment I quoted a little, I dunno, bothersome. I think it was the use of the word ugly perhaps. Just cos a dog is ugly to you, doesn't mean it's conformation cannot be perfect and visa versa. I think both my dobe x and the kelpie x were butt ugly and they did have shite congormation but it didn't stop them taking peoples breath away, that's what I'm trying to say. As for Borders, well, again it's subjective. I don't think I've ever looked at mine and gone 'crap you're a beautiful dog' cute yes but beautiful? Not so much.

  15. That's the same tired and boring argument that some new members bring to the forum in their efforts to bring down purebred dogs and their breeders. You missed this question in my post so shall put it in again for you I am proud of my purebreds dogs. Thanks to Souff for what should have been a light hearted thread to promote the beauty and benefits of purebred dogs its elitist because having a pure breed doesn't make you any better than someone who has a cross breed, and if you're saying, "well my pure breeds were walking down the street and everyone commented on how nice they looked" why not just say, "i was walking my dogs down the street and people commented on how nice they looked"? why the need to add in that they're pure breeds? the only reason you put it there is so you can show off and feel wiser than someone who has got their dog elsewhere. i could have got my dogs papers when i got him, but i didnt because i didnt care, i didnt need to prove that he hasn't been "tainted" by another breed. the rest of this forum is really interesting, but threads like this remind me of high school. You have an AmStaff and you didn't get papers for him?? I hope you've either got a huge bank account or are fine with your dog spending his final moments in a pound : Why you would get such a breed without papers i don't know. Highly irresponsible. In sorry if that comes across as 'elitist' but damn. Yep, we have pure breds (dunno if they are from the top breeder in the country.... And one I bred myself but am very happy with them and love sharing the benefits of buying a dog of a known quantity. Perhaps you should also know that I had smooches from a Cocker Spaniel x Poodle today, he was lovely but his owner looking for a pure breed as a companion for him. You would be surprised at the number of exhibitors and breeders who also own a rescue or two of unknown parentage. An yes, we show our dogs too but you know, I have many people commenting to me on the street how cool they think my dogs are and they are impressed by the fact that they are a pure breed because guess what that means??? They can go buy one for themselves My dogs aren't better than yours but I (and the majority of THIS FORUM) prefer our pure breeds and that is why we are here.
  16. I still hate the idea of mandatory desexing- stamp your feet and carry on about tail docking, dewclaw removal and Debarking being cruel and an easy way for owners to avoid injury or council complaints BUT it's okay to give BABY PUPPIES AND KITTENS an anaeasthetic and remove their reproductive organs because it's convenient!!! Preventing a bitch from getting pregnant isn't all that difficult. I'm not opposed to desexing but the point is- it's done for convenience but it's okay????? It is much more invasive than any of the prohibited or restricted procedures.
  17. Gumboots ready to go suppose I should sleep lol. See ya all tomorrow!!!
  18. Have you ever driven past a car crash? Don't really want to look, but can't not look either. And let's face it, so much of what is said and done on that show is a great big pile up! @Spikespuppy - My Dobe also will eat a tablet but as if you would do it like that with a snarling dog that you don't really know. There is no way in hell that any person that has an brain would even bother trying. He is a show pony. Oh I do agree!! And trying to shove a pill down a throat that size is really difficult even with a happy dog!! We used to have a 2kg Maltese x and it was so much easier to mush the pill up or use a popper- fiddling with a tiny muzzle is just silly???
  19. So the way I read it, NSW has provisions in place for the 3 yearly (in accordance with manufactures reccomemdations). But Victoria has a blanket 12 months. Is that only relating to breeding animals?
  20. Believe me, PC, I wanted to cry when I was staring at the ballots. I felt terrible for 'wasting' the vote but honestly had no idea where to go. Wider ideals are what I believe in too but at the same time, I felt that the Labor propositions relating to something so important to me meant that I could not in good conscience put it a vote that could mean allowing that to happen. I spent much of my day (very quiet at work) scouring all the websites I could find relating to my candidates and their party policies. I do feel that I made the decision not to vote in the lower house as opposed to going "nup, can't be stuffed. I don't care". And really, it's not like Labor has been a standout performer for this state And I did do a proper upper house vote so it wasn't entirely wasted. Totally wishing that I had gone with Mum and voted earlier this week before I knew about this... Could have begrudgingly voted for my preferred party guilt free. Sigh. Good luck tomorrow- I hope you all have decent candidates
  21. Yep, see ya there!!! If it takes you 45 mins it will take us about an hour I'm guessing maybe a bit longer if it's really wet. (btw have you got the dog food?? Hoping to grab it tomorrow ).
  22. They are not that I'm biased Well suited to Australian families, too. There aren't many homes they wouldn't be happy in. I love Border Terriers, have for as long as I can remember. Have tried talking OH into getting one in the future but he is not so keen, he wants a bulldog and seeing as I got to have another Dobe I suppose it's only fair to let him. I'll wear him down eventually, might take a while though. My baby girl is OBSESSED with Dobes lol. She thinks they are the most awesomest friends to play with. My first 'own' dog was a Dobe x and my first Border grew up with her ;) whatever breed you get, a Border will love lol. Saw a Dobe walking down the street last week
  23. hey i figured it. they have to do something to make up for all the $$$$$$$$$$'s lost since its been made public u DONT have to vaccinate every single iddy biddy year. think of the hundreds of thousands lost yearly now there? You do in Victoria and NSW - no choice mandatory code. whats with the "snipping"? nancy gate didnt cut anything, she would use a small hemostat to clamp the dewclaw and flick the nail out with her finger nail? gone in a flik and no bleeding at all and the pups didnt even notice? although they were newborn. i saw her do hundreds and since i had quie a few she bred to look after when be became ill, there wasnt a single one grew back. me? too squeemish I think snipping would be outlawed too I meant vaccinations .In Vic and NSW you HAVE to vaccinate every year or have a note from your vet to get out of jail that its not in the dog's best interest. More money. are you sure? i know i was told some ten years ago that i did not need to vaccinate yearly that its not good for their immune system n the teller was my vet. i have used two other vets in that time and they too have said the same, none of them have offered me anything in writing though.. soo are you supposed to ask for it? Our dogs current vacc cards are 'signed' off for 3 years, would that count as written evidence?
