  1. Awesome another Rat fan in the world :D. Do you still have any ratties? Unfortunately not I miss them terribly (had up to 10 at one stage, plus the same number of mice lol). Unfortunately my first female Border terrier has a very high prey drive and as they passed away of old age or illness I decided not to get any more. My last 2 were rescue boys who I had to rehome because she just wouldn't quit. So while I have her, no more ratties for me :p I'm lucky, I happen to have a 10 month old puppy right now :D Yeah, Im a breeder of pet ratties and i own about 15. haha. Yes, i would have to agree with you, i myself would love a little terrier for show, obedience and a most of all a much adored pet. However, to scared they will hert my rattie's as my mums dog have killed one of rats :D . (i understand for sure). However just too scared for my litter fuzzies . or do you think, if i raised its the rats it would be ok? but, wouldnt its temperament to hurt kick in one stage or the other? I can only speak for Borders but my male loves everyone and everything- I'd never trust him loose but he would 'talk' to my rodents through the cages and was quite happy to have them crawl over him etc with me there. If anything I think he would squash with excitement! He was no problem. However my girl, at only 4 months old got hold of one of my girl rats (sweet little lass with a head tilt) and, I'll just say it was quick Ziva was always incredibly interested in them and when we moved house and had a different set up, she was just far too interested and it got to the point where it was just ridiculous! Even with the door closed she would pace and whine etc. She is pure instinct. So I would never, ever trust her. Her daughter?? A lot less instinctive, more responsive and calmer. But haven't really been able to test her out- however I think with her temperament she would be ok to live with caged pets and learn to ignore them, like my boy did (well he didn't ignore them, he sat there for hours talking to them LOL). So a softer temperament would probably be okay. But nothing at all like Ziva :D
  2. The sticker is way too big for the form? Which why I wrote mine on and it didnt get put on the ped cert. Eta...you have already mentioned this Kerry. Same :D I waited until my pups were 7 weeks old and this microchipped before I registered them, paid the 24 hr fee (which was actually worth it- posted the form off Sunday afternoon and had the papers back on Tuesday), but because I didn't know you couldn't write the chip number on the form... It was a whole lot of rushing for nothing (could have just done what I was gonna and register before chipping).

  4. Same here, im just adding it to my rats dry mix, . :D yeah I used to grab sample packs for my rat and mouse mix! The book is actually quite nice. Haven't really read it but it's got some lovely photos and sections for 'records' and milestones for your puppy.
  5. Got my puppy book and voucher in the mail this evening. I don't feed Eukanuba bur it will be good for putting in Kongs.
  6. Another fan of the Bunnings panels we use them to build yards outside, block gaps under fences or gates as well as using them inside for drying the dogs after a bath or resting unwell dogs etc. I must have about 20 panels I reckon all up (some rusted as they have been out long term). Made an excellent fence with star pickets to extend my puppy run. About $25 now I think for a pack of 4.
  7. I have one but it's on my laptop at home. It's a Greyhound foster quite happy in a wire crate (actually belonged to our kelpie but he adopted it as his bed lol). If you don't have one (though I'm sure you will get plenty!) pm me and I will get it for you.
  8. Could work Hopefully someone with experience in that area will read this and be able to help. I just recall a few older threads where dogs have been previously chipped or registered as a non pit bull and they haven't had any issues. I would think if the vet says she is Boxer x staffy then she is.
  9. What is she currently registered/chipped as? If she is anything not Pit Bull you should be ok?
  10. I understand this is about promoting pure breed dogs from ethical registered breeders and the benefits of owning such a dog. With all the negativity surrounding pedigrees especially after the PDE program, we are in serious danger of losing our breeds.
  11. Results for the sweepies anyone? We made first cut for Puppy but didn't hang around lol. Good thing too as we were first on in my group due to absentees!!
  12. All the poor dogs there a transported like that, no restraint at all The crate is a form of restraint??? Eta it is a little small but the dog can still stand and turn around. Wouldn't use it for a long trip but I've seen much worse.
  13. Looks like a GSD cross to me... Look at the foot shape and breadth of the muzzle. I see no Belgian of any variety.
  14. The problem with it being entertainment value is that many people take what he says as gospel and it gives them the wring impression. Dr Chris says Pit Bulls are nasty so they must be?? And that puppy which tested as 'staffy x whippet' is now automatically a safe dog to have around children because it's not a pitty??? How about taking 5 seconds to remind people that all dogs especially pups require training and should never be left alone with kids?? It's portrayed as something of a reality show, educational etc. It is NOT a scripted drama or comedy. IMO the show should carry a large disclaimer at the beginning and end.
  15. Because a comment was made that most members of the public wouldnt know the difference between good conformation and bad. I gave an example of non doggy people who noticed and pointed it out to me. We then had a discussion about buying a well bred dog from a reputable breeder. I'm not sure why you're being sensitive about it. I understood the original post differently to what you just said Anyway, will be promo-ing pure breeds this week, bringing my baby girl into work at some point. Everyone has oo'd and ahh'd at the pictures and been told that it's a pure breed so will be interesting to see the result of seeing the real thing She will also be traveling in on the train and home again with probably a market walk during lunchtime For those who have 'plain' or common dogs, what about practicing your obedience skills or tricks on walks? An obedient or clever dog always turns heads, especially with breeds who have a 'reputation' of being nasty, it could be a great opportunity to engage in conversation with someone. Any pure breed doing tricks is good PR anyway or just basic obedience- it also gives you the opportunity to let them know buying from known lines will mean stable temperament and buying from a reputable breeder means they will match the pup to you as well as having given the pups lots of mental stimulation and preparing it well for life as a pet
  16. 1 medium and 3 small. Dog food gets split between mum and myself (dry/raw/tinned fish/tinned or loaf/roll food for emergencies or treats, things like 2x4s etc). My 3 eat approximately the same as her 1 so it works out 50/50. Bedding- there is an outdoor hammock for Nessa plus her kennel. We have another smaller kennel in the (presently unused) dog run. Indoor beds are a blanket or vetbed on the living room floor but they usually pile on the couch. There are also 2 open crates in the dining room plus the spare room (off the lounge) which has a futon in it which the dogs also use. 90% of the time the back door is open so they have a large range of bedding options. In the process if getting some nice beds for the living room but I believe that is more for us! Night time mum has her dog in her room (usually crated) I have one on my bed and the other 2 crated beside my bed. Vet bills- have a dedicated pet savings account and dedicated pet credit card. However rarely use that as can cover the basics on our earnings. vaccinations are now 3 yearly so that's easy! Mums dog is a Collie so needs Sentinel for heartworm (which also does intestinal plus fleas), so I buy ProHeart for my dogs which is about $16 for 6 tablets which lasts me 2 doses (I dose every 6 weeks rather than monthly, vet recommendation and that's only fairly recent due to the mozzie plague). I only use Advantage in the warmer months and buy a pack for larger dogs and split it. All wormers done 6 monthly so does not break the bank no matter where I buy them. (this is not about the money, if they required more frequent treatments, annual vaccinations etc I would spend it, no questions. But who doesn't like to save money and yes, if I can find an equivalent product at a lower cost, I will choose it in preference). Walking, mum usually takes her dog and I take mine separately or in pairs. Here you can only walk 2 at a time (4 if Greyhounds). My guys don't need daily structured exercise though. As much as they love getting out, they dont climb the walls if they miss a walk or 3. They are quite happy with games in the house or yard and have an active social life in weekends.
  17. Are you talking about Terriers or Collies? I'm not aware of any Terriers in Aus who are fortunate enough to hunt with a hound pack. oh i am an immigrant from scotland so i have seen borders working there eta in the late 60's early 70's Ooooh jealous much????? I believe even there they aren't allowed to work much. Stupid animal rights freaks. I did enquire about running with a registered hound pack here but they wouldn't accept terriers grr. Sorry, didn't mean to sound rude or make it sound like I thought you were stupid, just needed to clarify as I get 'collie' all the damn time LOL. Getting a little OT but I was recently privileged to meet a gamekeeper on a Scottish estate, along with his working Jack Russell bitch and 2 working Cocker Spaniels, all beautifully bred. All were treasured senior dogs, with very little arthritis, and still had an active role in the shoots, flushing and retrieving. It was so good to chat with him and meet his valued dogs who are still carrying out their traditional roles ... and loving it. Souff Lucky! Did you get pictures? How similar conformation wise were the dogs to our 'show' dogs here?? Wish we could work more with our dogs (although I'm not sure if I'd actually ever hunt my terriers, they quite possibly mean a little too much to me to risk their lives, however I think it would be different if I purchased a pup purely with the intention of working it). Would you believe that OH had the camera and was taking photos of a doe in the woods nearby. He just raised his eyebrows when I started babbling on about the gamekeepers dogs when he returned but I always seem to find interesting dogs, so he is used to it! It would have been lovely to have got some photos but the dogs had work to do. The spaniels were a little heavier set, but that could be to do with their ages, 10 & 12 as I recall. The JRT was much the same age, a bit cobby and in the head shape she reminded me of the Myrmidon JRTs of 10 years ago. She was an excellently marked tricolour, smooth coat, nice forward fold on the ears and a face that constantly said, "Lets go, boss!" The spaniels were a bit more laid back and still very capable of leaping up into their custom pen in the back of his Jeep. It was one great experience. Sounds fantastic Don't see many tricolor Jacks around these days (not in Vic anyway).

  19. No I didnt. I'm totally confused.. Oh well...we must be at cross purposes. Sorry. It's not about beauty -v- ugly. It's about a dog that's well put together. Can we focus on that? A well bred dog. The dog in my example is obviously not well bred because anyone can see he was put together wrong. Seeing a dog put together right is something to be proud of. But why was it important that the dog was a mongrel because it was poorly put together? There are plenty of pure breds that have poor conformation, some from the best intended matings. And some pure breeds correct conformation can look incredibly poor to those who don't know what they are looking at (Bulldogs, Borzoi, GSD, Dachshund etc come to mind as being 'odd' compared to what many Joe Public know in terms of dogs). Maybe I'm being over-sensitive about the topic
  20. To the OP - how are your dogs going now? Has your partner realised that the Akita was just being a dog? How is everything going??
  21. Didn't think you were *deleted on request* I am sorry you had to go through that with your girls And I do appreciate you posting and your advice, thank you.
  22. We will be hopefully collecting a bag this Friday (crazy crazy trying to get some but that's no one's fault just happens LOL), with the trouble getting EP of late (have recently bought 2 x 3kg bags because that's all we could find at the local stores! And one store has jacked the 15kg price up $20!!!!!). Very much looking forward to seeing how our kids do on it After spending $95 a month on 15kg of dog food... spending $75 every 6 weeks will be fantastic!
  23. My wee girl certainly does! Cheeky little rat. She was a wee thing when born, but by about 7 weeks wasn't standing out as particularly small. She is now 3 and a half and quite a normal size, not small but not large. She is well within standard When she had her own litter, the smallest born was still the smallest at 'home time' but not by much and she certainly hasn't had any issues that I'm aware of! Lives on a farm
  24. You weren't there, you don't know my dogs or their relationship, so what you would do in such a situation isn't really relevant. Well if you don't want anyone to comment on what you say, or your situation or your dogs, then don't post at all - what you have said is not relevant, is it? If you don't think one dog attacking another in the way you describe isn't horrific, that is your business. If one of my dogs decided to get one of my other dogs by the throat in the way you have described and I chose to put my own dog to sleep, that is my business. as is spikes decision. well for now what the future holds is a whole differnt ball game TY asal for understanding Certainly hold no illusions that they will be happy happy la las for ever but I think to this point, we have an amazing dynamic within our little fur-family considering these 2 are both dominant bitches. And also considering everywhere you look, you are told Borders never forget and after 1 fight they can never be trusted.....
