edited to add this ABC video of Eco at work http://www.abc.net.au/news/2011-10-31/spaniel-enlisted-to-find-little-penguins/3611436 http://www.couriermail.com.au/news/breaking-news/spaniel-to-protect-endangered-little-penguins/story-e6freono-1226181162582 Spaniel to protect endangered Little Penguins by: By Lauren Farrow. From: AAP October 31, 2011 8:17AM AN English Springer Spaniel named Eco has the fate of hundreds in her hands. The hound has been trained to protect the last remaining Little Penguin colony on mainland New South Wales. She will sniff out the tiny endangered penguins - that stand about 30cm tall and weigh about 1kg when fully grown - as well as their biggest threats - foxes, dogs and cats. Today marks Eco's first official day at work at Manly, in Sydney's north. "I've trained her to passively respond when she detects a penguin burrow," her trainer Steve Austin said. "She first stops and stares at the area where the penguin has been detected and then she paws that area when asked 'show me'." "In contrast, when detecting foxes, Eco's response is very active whereby she vigorously digs the area when she detects a fox den." Mr Austin said it takes Eco one hour to cover an area that would take ten people four hours to monitor. National Parks and Wildlife Services (NPWS) hope Eco will help them get a better understanding of the penguin's numbers so they can plan protective measures. "One of the challenging things about monitoring the Little Penguin population is determining the exact size of the colony and most importantly the breeding pairs," NPWS regional manager, Gary Dunnett said in a statement today. "Little Penguins are notoriously secretive, leaving for their fishing expeditions on night fall and returning in the pre-dawn light. "Eco will be used today to try and find nests we previously haven't known about which will allow us to monitor any adults and chicks and also to map where they are nesting against where the currently protected areas are." Currently, the only known mainland breeding colony in the state is in a secluded cove in the Manly area of Sydney Harbour, the NSW Office of Environment and Heritage says. This colony, which once numbered in the hundreds now only has about 60 pairs of birds. It has been declared an endangered population.

Pity you don't live in Qld...I have a 'Nature Loo Composting Toilet' system that I am going to sell, we used it for a couple of years until we saved up to buy a Biolytix. It was ok and would be ideal for many dogs doing heaps of poo.

How Did Everyone Fall In Love Their Pooch?
Boronia replied to huskies4life88's topic in General Dog Discussion
My old dog, Harry, a cross terrier/many others, was pts during an operation for a tumour...unfortunately they had spread to other parts of his body. Anyway I lasted about a week from missing the tack tack tack of doggie toe nails on the floor, so was hunting on line for a Westie as I had always wanted one. I saw in the Trading Post and DOL an ad for two older Westies about 100k's away. We went to their place next day and had a cuppa outside at the picnic table with the owner. Penny came over and put her front paws up on the seat beside me and stretched back her head and smiled...showing what was left of her front teeth Mac just looked a little vague. We bought them both that moment and they have made us laugh so much. I saw Daisy advertised on DOL as an ex-breeder, I contacted the owner and she said we could buy her.I didn't like her much when we went to pick her up....scatty and no manners, I wasn't really impressed with the conditions and the fact they were selling her not spayed, so just quickly handed over the $200 to get her out of there. They are all my best buddies now and I love them to bits. -
Well you could ask the Queen to help bath Grumpy then

Kote Glo No Rinse Dog & Puppy Shampoo

that is what I would reckon as well Aussie. I wonder how it'd go with dogs that do have sensitive skins, probably not too well. -
I don't know what state you live in but if you can't get to a produce store you could buy on-line. The electric braided tape is so easy to use Design of a fence: http://www.sureguard.com.au/electric_fence_design.html and here is a place: http://www.electricfenceaustralia.com.au/ If you type in 'solar electric fence' in ebay there are some units with tape for under $200...like this one http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Solar-Electric-Fence-Charger-200m-Hot-Tape-Plus-FREE-AUTO-BATTERY-CHARGER-/250899593470?pt=AU_Fencing&hash=item3a6ac7f8fe

http://www.gympietimes.com.au/story/2011/10/19/dogs-dangerous-stunt/ Dog's dangerous stunt 19th October 2011 WITNESSING the most amazing, death-defying manoeuvre of this silky terrier's life, Gympie's Donna Dodson will never forget how she came to know the tenacious little dog Pikie and her owner Jan Stokes. Pikie literally fell into Mrs Dodson's life last week while she was driving into Gympie for the afternoon school run. What looked like a rag being blown out of the car ahead turned out to be a living pet - one which miraculously survived. "It was a horrific thing to see," Mrs Dodson recounted, explaining she had been travelling at 80kmh on the Bruce Hwy near the golf course in Gympie's north when she saw an extraordinary sequence of events happen in seconds. "She (Pikie) was blown out of the rear window on the driver's side, went under the car and was spat out between the front and back wheels on the other side. She was then projected about three metres into the air and bounced a couple of times while being propelled into the gutter." Pikie got up, shook herself off and started heading back towards the Bruce Hwy when Mrs Dodson rescued her. Realising then it was a living thing, she pulled over, and in the pouring rain, collected what looked like a drowned rat. "She's a miracle dog just to be standing up... When I saw Pikie rolling across the road I thought she was a piece of carpet," Mrs Dodson said. A visit to the vet gave Pikie the all-clear besides a few little grazes above one eye, behind a front paw and to an elbow. RSPCA was notified and Mrs Stokes could not believe her luck when she heard the good news so soon after losing her beloved pet. She had been moving house from Cloyna, near Murgon, to Eumundi with her three dogs that day and had no idea Pikie had gone missing until she arrived at her destination. It turns out, 18-month-old Pikie is quite adept at pressing on the electric buttons to wind down the windows so she can stick her head out. At just 3kg it's no surprise she was sucked out the window and tossed about like a plastic bag. "I know now," Mrs Stokes said of her dog's ability to wind down electric car windows. Pikie will be restrained in a dog harness when travelling from now on."

Hi Vickyimills, contact Ron http://www.dolforums.com.au/user/12777-ron/ and ask him if he can recommend a breeder in Victoria. You will need to know if you want the Westie as a pet or if you would like to show him/her. If you can contact the Vic club http://www.whwtclubvic.org.au/index.htm and find out when they are having a show you could pop along and chat to the owners.
