A friend sent me this, A DOG'S SEEING EYE DOG Lily is a Great Dane that has been blind since a bizarre medical condition required that she have both eyes removed. For the last 5 years, Maddison, another Great Dane, has been her sight. The two are, of course, inseparable.

Merlina Salko-Sarri, 50, pleaded guilty today to one charge of animal cruelty in Holland Park Magistrates Court after admitting to putting the dog, named Rufus, in a wheelie bin outside an abandoned house. The court was told the pet was used a pawn in a neighbourhood dispute over renovations made by the dog's owner. Advertisement: Story continues below Salko-Sarri had intended to dump the dog in bushland, but panicked and threw it in the black wheelie bin on Elberta Street in Macgregor on May 29 this year, the court heard. An 80-year-old woman, living next door to the abandoned house, heard Rufus's cries and found the poodle-cross wrapped in plastic inside the bin. She rescued the dog and alerted authorities. Magistrate Colin Strofield said any reasonable member of the community would regard Salko-Sarri's actions as reprehensible. He fined her $4000, but recorded no conviction because she would otherwise loose her job as a casino cashier.

Paul Clements and his dog Bridie were hunting wallaby near Flowery Gully last night when the one-year-old fox terrier disappeared. Mr Clements could not find it and started searching again this morning. He eventually found the dog down a seven-metre deep abandoned mine shaft. He lowered food and water and called police and the SES. A five-man team spent the morning working to free the dog which was hauled to the surface just before midday.

After reading this I decided to have another go at Mac's nails, I was going to take him to the vet so he could be sedated, he has had a phobia about his feet ever since I got him at around 7 y/o. I sat him on a towel on the veranda table and gave him a tiny dry kibble every time he didn't squeak or go huuuuh huuuuh, and managed to clip and dremel all his toes. I used 1 & 1/2 cups of tiny kibble to do the job, Mac upchucked the lot shortly after (well it had to happen)...Penny helped him re-eat it. Anyway, it wasn't too much of a trauma after all, thank goodness for food-driven dogs.

A 50-year-old woman was walking through Mount Druitt about 6.45pm (AEDT) yesterday when she was bitten by a crossbreed dingo/fox terrier, police said. The woman fell as a result of the bite and was taken to Mount Druitt Hospital suffering from a bite wound, cuts and abrasions. A short time later, the woman's 25-year-old son approached the owner of the dog, a 62-year-old man who was allegedly armed with an axe. A fight broke out, during which the 25-year-old and a 17-year-old neighbour disarmed the dog owner. The victim's son then allegedly punched the owner in the head, causing him to fall. The 17-year-old boy allegedly kicked him in the head while he was on the ground. Police were called and all three were arrested. The 62-year-old man was charged with several offences, including being in charge of an attacking dog and affray. The 25-year-old was charged with affray and both were bailed to appear before Mount Druitt Local Court on December 1. The 17-year-old boy was charged with common assault, affray and will appear before Parramatta Children's Court on November 28. Blacktown Council has been informed of the dog incident and will decide an appropriate course of action.

The 54-year-old woman faced six charges after allegedly docking the tails of six Rottweiler puppies she had bred. She pled guilty in court to all charges. Magistrate Maxine Baldwin fined the defendant $2000, and ordered her to pay $2936.58 in costs. The Magistrate commented that the days of docking the tails of dogs have passed; and in these enlightened times, tail docking is no longer acceptable, or in accordance with community standards. RSPCA Veterinarian Dr Rosemary Miller examined all puppies after they were seized back in April, 2010. Dr Miller stated the wounds on the stumpy tails of the puppies were consistent with having their tails removed (docked). RSPCA Inspector, Julia Steley said it's important that people realise that tail docking is illegal under section 24 of the Animal Care and Protection Act, and it is something that RSPCA and the courts take very seriously.

Today marks Eco's first official day at work at Manly, in Sydney's north. "I've trained her to passively respond when she detects a penguin burrow," her trainer Steve Austin said. "She first stops and stares at the area where the penguin has been detected and then she paws that area when asked 'show me'." "In contrast, when detecting foxes, Eco's response is very active whereby she vigorously digs the area when she detects a fox den." Mr Austin said it takes Eco one hour to cover an area that would take ten people four hours to monitor. National Parks and Wildlife Services (NPWS) hope Eco will help them get a better understanding of the penguin's numbers so they can plan protective measures. "One of the challenging things about monitoring the Little Penguin population is determining the exact size of the colony and most importantly the breeding pairs," NPWS regional manager, Gary Dunnett said in a statement today. "Little Penguins are notoriously secretive, leaving for their fishing expeditions on night fall and returning in the pre-dawn light. "Eco will be used today to try and find nests we previously haven't known about which will allow us to monitor any adults and chicks and also to map where they are nesting against where the currently protected areas are." Currently, the only known mainland breeding colony in the state is in a secluded cove in the Manly area of Sydney Harbour, the NSW Office of Environment and Heritage says. This colony, which once numbered in the hundreds now only has about 60 pairs of birds. It has been declared an endangered population.

Pity you don't live in Qld...I have a 'Nature Loo Composting Toilet' system that I am going to sell, we used it for a couple of years until we saved up to buy a Biolytix. It was ok and would be ideal for many dogs doing heaps of poo.
