  1. http://www.gympietimes.com.au/story/2011/10/19/dogs-dangerous-stunt/ Dog's dangerous stunt 19th October 2011 WITNESSING the most amazing, death-defying manoeuvre of this silky terrier's life, Gympie's Donna Dodson will never forget how she came to know the tenacious little dog Pikie and her owner Jan Stokes. Pikie literally fell into Mrs Dodson's life last week while she was driving into Gympie for the afternoon school run. What looked like a rag being blown out of the car ahead turned out to be a living pet - one which miraculously survived. "It was a horrific thing to see," Mrs Dodson recounted, explaining she had been travelling at 80kmh on the Bruce Hwy near the golf course in Gympie's north when she saw an extraordinary sequence of events happen in seconds. "She (Pikie) was blown out of the rear window on the driver's side, went under the car and was spat out between the front and back wheels on the other side. She was then projected about three metres into the air and bounced a couple of times while being propelled into the gutter." Pikie got up, shook herself off and started heading back towards the Bruce Hwy when Mrs Dodson rescued her. Realising then it was a living thing, she pulled over, and in the pouring rain, collected what looked like a drowned rat. "She's a miracle dog just to be standing up... When I saw Pikie rolling across the road I thought she was a piece of carpet," Mrs Dodson said. A visit to the vet gave Pikie the all-clear besides a few little grazes above one eye, behind a front paw and to an elbow. RSPCA was notified and Mrs Stokes could not believe her luck when she heard the good news so soon after losing her beloved pet. She had been moving house from Cloyna, near Murgon, to Eumundi with her three dogs that day and had no idea Pikie had gone missing until she arrived at her destination. It turns out, 18-month-old Pikie is quite adept at pressing on the electric buttons to wind down the windows so she can stick her head out. At just 3kg it's no surprise she was sucked out the window and tossed about like a plastic bag. "I know now," Mrs Stokes said of her dog's ability to wind down electric car windows. Pikie will be restrained in a dog harness when travelling from now on."

  11. Hi Vickyimills, contact Ron http://www.dolforums.com.au/user/12777-ron/ and ask him if he can recommend a breeder in Victoria. You will need to know if you want the Westie as a pet or if you would like to show him/her. If you can contact the Vic club http://www.whwtclubvic.org.au/index.htm and find out when they are having a show you could pop along and chat to the owners.

  19. http://www.abc.net.au/news/2011-10-08/stem-cells-rejuvenating-arthritic-dogs/3382158 Australian vets say they are having great success treating arthritic dogs with stem cells and researchers developing arthritis treatments for humans are taking a keen interest in the technique. The trouble is that some dog owners feel their four-legged friends are getting better treatment than they are. Melbourne vet Ray Ferguson has had a particular interest in treating arthritic dogs for about 30 years. At first he was sceptical of the benefits of canine stem cell treatment, but he has now treated about 40 dogs. "For individual joints where a dog has one bad knee or one bad elbow, the treatments are very simple," he said. "A very, very light anaesthetic and we pop an injection of the stem cells straight into the joint and it's all over in about five minutes." Dr Ferguson says the stem cells come from donor dogs. "These largely come from dogs that are being de-sexed, they're all young dogs so we've got young, vibrant cells," he said. Dr Ferguson says preliminary trials involved dogs with skin disease and joint disease being injected with stem cells as well, but the arthritic dogs responded best of all. "Particularly in the early trials I did five dogs, one of which was my own that had I would say incurable lameness, persistent lameness," he said. "They all responded and those five dogs are all sound today. That's amazing." The stem cell treatment costs between $1,500 and $3,000. Audio: Stem cells rejuvenating arthritic dogs (AM) Dr Ferguson says he tells dog owners the stem cell treatment works best on younger dogs but dogs up to about 10 years of age are also responding well. "I have to point out to them, look I'm not offering a fountain of youth. This isn't going to turn an old dog into young dog," he said. "But it's just a wonderful, adjunctive therapy to have to everything else that we've got." Humans 'getting jealous' Professor Richard Boyd is the director of Monash Immunology and Stem Cell Laboratories at Monash University. He says the stem cell treatment of dogs is helping researchers understand the effect similar treatment would have on humans. "Their lives are constrained into 10 or 15 years and that reflects a human going from up to 70 or 80 years," he said. "So the conditions which are generative which a dog gets in 10 years like arthritic hips and joints is very similar to what ageing humans get. "So we can treat these dogs and improve their health using these stem cells. But it has a double-edged advantage of being able to say to our clinicians, look we've done now 8,000 animals. "This is a basic very good basis to being able to treat humans." Professor Boyd says the dogs may actually be getting the better and more innovative treatment than a lot of Australians. "The retired senior who's taking the rejuvenated dog for a walk is now getting jealous," he said. "But I think that what we will see certainly soon is that this is sort of like the winter of stem cell research, it's now becoming the spring of stem cell therapy. "So hopefully we'll get a retired senior and a retired dog both walking briskly along the beach."
  20. I just Googled for some Kerry Blue Terrier piccies and saw he ones on this link, I reckon after seeing the last picture that there would be large puddles all over the floor after they have had a drink http://www.dogbreedinfo.com/kerryblueterrierphotos.htm
  21. Yep, Mainly chicken frames and Turkey necks. Even the little one has small Turkey necks. As I have said it was mainly purchased for the IG that had problems with the front teeth with plaque. All this has disapeared and now I just give the front teeth a brush when I think of it now. I was brushing once a week with nothing but the brush and they came clean.Whats more it appeas as though she is in whelp so no problems with the product there. and it appears the product can get them in whelp as well
