  2. Australian pet insurer urged to drop premium bills after death of animals Choice asks Australia's second largest pet insurer to stop forcing owners to pay premiums up to a year after a pet has died Helen Davidson theguardian.com, Saturday 8 November 2014 00.01 AEST Pet owners should not have to pay insurance premiums up to a year after their pets have died, consumer group Choice says. Photograph: Dan Himbrechts/AAP Australia's second largest pet insurer, Petplan, is being urged to change a policy which forces customers to continue to pay premiums for up to a year after their pet has died. Consumer advocacy group Choice on Saturday launched a campaign for the company, backed by insurer Allianz, to follow in the footsteps of its biggest rival, Petsure. Petsure amended its own vet insurance policy in April this year after consumer backlash. Ross McLeod, a 72-year-old retiree from Sydney, is still paying about $100 a month in insurance premiums on two of his dogs which died this year. Lochen, 13 and Skye, six, died unexpectedly of cancer within three months of each other. "It was really sad," Macleod told Guardian Australia. "It's a vulnerable period, they were our babies. "We notified [Petplan] in both cases about the dogs having died and then we rang them when we saw we were still getting billed by direct debit." "They said 'well actually it's in the policy that you have to pay for the rest of the year'. We didn't take it any further at that stage because it was a fairly traumatic time and there didn't seem much point." He said it was an "objectionable policy" and had he realised what it entailed he and his wife Selvi would have gone with another provider. "If it was a human there would be a huge outrage if a health insurance company was still asking for money after the person had died," said Macleod. Monika Hooker, 49, found herself in a similar situation when her British bulldog, Cookie, passed away in August this year. Monica Hooker's British bulldog Cookie died in August but she is still paying pet insurance premiums. Photograph: Monica Hooker Cookie had racked up numerous vet bills shortly before he died, so Hooker called Petplan to check that they wouldn't cancel the policy before she could put in claims for them. The woman on the phone told her that would be fine, and she could cancel the policy after and receive a refund on premiums, Hooker told Guardian Australia. "Even their employees don't understand the policy," she said. "When I got the cheque back and sent an email saying Cookie's passed away … they sent one back saying they can't cancel the policy." The former insurance worker has since cancelled Petplan insurance on her two other dogs. "You expect an insurance policy to make sense. How can you insure a dog that doesn't exist? Cookie couldn't claim anymore." Choice's head of media, Tom Godfrey, said: "We continue to receive complaints from distraught pet owners who have been forced to pay premiums for the remainder of their policy period, even in cases where they made a claim but their pet passed away. "Your family wouldn't expect to pay your health insurance premiums if you passed away so why should pet owners be forced to pay premiums after the death of the family pet?" Choice is calling on the company to add the phrase "other than the death of your pet" to a clause which states if a client who has made a claim cancels a policy "for whatever reason" they must pay the remaining premium for the period of insurance and Petplan will offer no refunds. Petplan has been contacted for comment.

  7. This will give you a smile Police take to rowboat and golf buggies to catch suspect in low-speed chase Brisbane Times http://www.brisbanet...bnr=MTAxMzU1ODU Police chase the suspect in a rowboat. Police swapped patrol cars for a rowboat and golf buggies while chasing an accused thief through Ransome and Birkdale east of Brisbane. The officers were praised for their lateral thinking after the alleged offender, wanted on outstanding warrants, swam across Tingalpa Creek in a bid to evade arrest on Wednesday. The man, a 23-year-old from Ransome, allegedly dumped the stolen motorbike he was riding and ran when he spotted two police officers on bicycles at about 1.40pm on Wednesday. After watching the suspect swim across to the Howeston Golf Course, one of the officers borrowed a rowboat and crossed the creek. Reinforcements were called to cordon off both sides of the creek, while the constable used the rowboat again to help ferry the dog squad across to the Birkdale side. The golf club provided buggies for police to use in the search. A police dog eventually found the man allegedly attempting to once again flee into the creek. Officers recovered a bag filled with suspected stolen jewellery at the scene. He was arrested and charged with three counts each of unlawful use of motor vehicle and stealing, two counts each of stealing/receive and obstruct police, and one count each of possess tainted property and unlawfully possess motor vehicle. Brisbane Water Police helped escort the officers and suspect back across the creek after the arrest in a more conventional vessel. The man is due to face court later this week.

The beach and its surrounding suburbs are somewhat of a mecca for holidaying dog owners. It is known for its canine-friendly hotels, resorts and restaurants. 15. AWL have gotten the contract from Brisbane Times http://www.brisbanet...bnr=MTAxMzU1ODU Animal Welfare League named as new operator for Brisbane pounds September 19, 2014 - 12:01AM Kim Stephens Journalist Volunteers with the Animal Welfare League. Photo: Rob Williams/The Queensland Times After three controversial years in charge, the Melbourne-based Lost Dogs Home will soon relinquish control of Brisbane's two animal shelters. Brisbane City Council has been forced to defend the pound operator against claims of a high kill rate in its three-year tenure, after an animal advocacy group claimed it turned the city into the country's "stray pet-killing capital". However, the claims by Saving Pets, which the advocacy group alleged came from a Freedom of Information request, were proven to be false by official figures. The council's lifestyle chief Krista Adams said the council had engaged the Lost Dog's Home in 2011 in a bid to improve re-homing rates of the city's stray animals. "The Lost Dogs Home was engaged to improve re-homing rates for healthy and suitable cats and dogs and they have successfully delivered on this goal," Cr Adams said. "They helped improve re-homing rates and since taking over management in 2011, no healthy and suitable dogs and cats have been euthanised." In a statement, the Lost Dog's Home said it had made the decision not to recontest the contract when its current one expired due to the tyranny of distance. "After long and careful consideration and with extensive, external developments planned for the Bracken Ridge site, we have decided that the remoteness of the shelters, comparative to our headquarters in North Melbourne, Victoria, was ultimately not conducive to continue running two busy facilities efficiently and effectively," the statement read. Cr Adams announced on Wednesday that the Animal Welfare League of Queensland had won the new three-year contract and would assume responsibility for the shelters on October 17. "Brisbane City Council is pleased to announce that it has secured a thee year contract with animal welfare experts, Animal Welfare League of Queensland, to ensure that all healthy and suitable cats and dogs in Brisbane continue to have the best opportunity to be re-homed," Cr Adams said. "The Animal Welfare League of Queensland has built a strong reputation for being dedicated to providing high quality animal management services and are also a great value service for residents." This year's council budget documents showed the Lost Dog's Home dramatically improved re-homing rates among the city's stray cats and dogs after the council outsourced operations of its Bracken Ridge and Willawong shelters to them in a three-year $270,000 contract in 2011. The number of dogs re-homed increased to 400 dogs (or 83 per cent) in the 2013/14 financial year, up from just 71 dogs in the 2010/11 financial year, just prior to the pound operator assuming operational responsibility. Cat re-homing rates remained problematic however and the kill rate high, due to a feral cat trapping program. Cr Adams said 60 per cent of cats were euthanised last year, down from 76 per cent in 2010/11, while 17 per cent of dogs were killed.
