  1. Thanks... I was just thinking I can't believe it's been almost three months, and still, how sad I am about loosing him. He was coming up 10 but the damn tick was too toxic for him (issy had a tick the same week but pulled through) harves was at the specialist emergency vet but couldn't do any thing more...hope it gets easier
  2. Well, it's coming up 3 months since you left because of a tick, we tried everything little man, but it was too much for you. I still miss you every day as does issy, she is kinda lost without you, and has a howl every now and again if she sees a little white dog. Rest in peace Harvey... You were the best dog ever xxx
  3. Hi all Whilst giving my cairn a brush this morning, I noticed it was looking a bit worse for ware (the brush that is, not the cairns) and with Xmas coming up, thought I would get her a new brush. Now, when looking online, slicker brushes were mentioned for cairns, i did have one but someone ;) took it into the yard never to be found again.. Anyhow, to my question, which is better for a cairn, slicker or pin... Current one is metal pin (but dodgy) Ps.. Also have coat king.
  4. Thanks, we are ripping everything out of the back of the yard -ferns, natives everything, hopefully that will eliminate anything bringing them in. And Let me sun To dry everything out, I read humid, moist areas are what ticks like...It's weird in our old house, same suburb we had many possums and not one tick, here i could not even say if I have seen one, or any other critter.. Clyde - were the sprays from bunnings for ticks specifically or all bugs? It is awful isn't it.. I running out and checking our cairn every time she scratches or goes right up the back.. Totally paranoid.
  5. I just realized Harvey is my profile pic That's what we have prevetix collar, not advatix. My vet mentioned that pro ban is getting phased out as aust. Is the only country still using it? Think I will add frontline to the list. And will hopefully hear back from her breeder and get him to strip her right back. Bloody awful things they are!!
  6. Hello dolers Well, it has been years since I have logged on but really need some help after a terrible terrible week. Last Tuesday our cairn terrier got a tick, rushed her to our vet and she was home Wednesday afternoon - full recovery from that. Unfortunately our 9 year old westie, was rushed to the emergency vet late Friday night also with a tick, came good Saturday, they kept him in overnight again, called Sunday morning when he was showing weakness in legs (had not previously) , called again that afternoon to run more bloods and shave him and do xray, 10 mins after that they called to say we had to get there... And make the most terrible awful decision ever To, my question though before I start crying again...we are now obviously paranoid. Our cairn, had a tick bath and wearing advantix collar, plus daily checks. We had already booked people to come and rip out a lot of trees and shrubs before all of this, and they are coming Thursday and Friday.. My concern is that this will disturb the ticks that are obviously living in our back yard. I am planning on keeping isobel (cairn) away from this away while everything settles or what not, I have read about lime being sprinkled on the ground for fleas... Does this work for ticks ? Is there anything I can put on the ground that will kill them? That obviously is not going to be toxic to dogs/children too? It will basically be dirt the area that is getting cleared. Any tips would be great Thanks K
  7. so far there is no swelling at all, no heat or anything, its strange. Will be booking her into the vet. Should i put some heat or perhaps an ice pack in with her tonight?
  8. Hello Has been a while since i have been on DOL, but i have a question. I have an almost 10 month old cairn terrier - who is a nightmade, well more just a busy lil thing. Thursday night i noticed she was licking her front paw, friday morning I went to work she was fine when i left Husband called to say she was limping i came home that arvo she was ok, slight limp. Saturday morning, i let her out of her crate and she has a definate limp but gets better as the day goes on, yet she will still have a lick at it i have checked her paw out that many times and nothing, no cut, crack in the paw pad, prickle blood or anything?? Am thinking it could be her toe too?? Whatever she has done is not slowing her down much as the day goes on (she is not a morning type girl normally), apart from the limp she is eating and playing with the westie as normal. Am thinking it is muscle as it gets beter as the day goes on, and is worse in the morning. But she is a little touchy around the toe?? Could she have sprained something? Can dogs sprain toes?
  9. I have just started feeding RC to harvey, actually just finished the first bag this morning. He seems to really like it! Like really really likes it... I only got it because the pet supply place only had Nutrience derma which for some reason he hates (likes holistic). He woofs this stuff down, will be picking more up this afternoon. Can't think of the one i got for him as i store dry food in tub. Small breed active or something..
  10. LOL - harvey loves steamed pumpkin too. And coconut
  11. the poor little boy. I would take him to another vet. Persoanally i think he is getting bathed too often. I have use malesab and phoyex (sp) on harvey but only as a spot treatment and that was a reaction from frontline (small patch in between shoulder blades). He has no skin problems what so ever since that and that was a couple of years ago (he just turned 4). I really hope you find out what the problem is with your boy.
  12. I use sentinal spectrum and never seen a flea on Harvey, perhaps you could give that a try when she is due for worming next.. Hope you get it sorted, i hate fleas!
  13. What sort of brush are you using on Rolley, maybe the brush is why he doesn't like it. I have a soft pin slicker (and go against the coat with that) and a soft pin brush for finisishing... and a fine tooth comb.. I found that when harves was little he wanted something to chew like a nylabone and liked to be groomed on a pillow Now that he is older i just get his brushes out and he goes to his 'grooming pillow' or out to the deck (likes to steaky beak at the neighbours)
  14. He is a bit feral at the moment ...brat of a dog really.
  15. Daily brushing keeps my boy white..in saying that though his love for dirt over the last week is rather annoying so i have given up this week, oh, and his love for crawling along the yard to see the bush turkey LOL... I'll be bathing him this weekend i don't bath him often AT ALL, he also has a groomer who will be stripping him back for summer (and it makes tick checks easier for me). I use Aloveen shampoo and have a spray bottle with diluted aloveen leave in condioner.. really gentle on westie skin and smells nice. This would possibly be the only photo i have of dirty harvey LOL... this was a couple of weeks ago. ETA - Westies don't generally 'know" they are in fact white sometimes LOL...
  16. Yes WL, i agree they take up alot of room but 1/2 of my freezer is bones anyway LOL, i found with Harvey he would gulpthe pre-made dr b down to fast whereas my mixed was chunkier (minced carcass & vege/fruit) - he is a pig though They are convinent if you don't have the time to make your own, Harvey isn't even on BARF atm (still get fish, BIG bones etc), he is on hills oral care - dam bugger as mentiond gulps bones in one move - teeth looking a little blergh WL - as a side note.. saw Jock (remember Jock?) last week, he is the funniest little 'old man" i have seen, a real mans dog and a little chubby too.
  17. I have done both.. honestly i think harvey did better on my mix then the bought ones...
  18. LOL.. Harvey is currently sporting the marshmellow head look at the moment, he was stripped back in June/july this year so is nice and short...although his head needs some work The pic is my sig was taken when he came away with us to Northern NSW - DARN freezing so he had his long coat and the eyebrows. Harvey Before groomers very long he went a bit wild there at that stage LOL! Harvey pic after the groomers, he looks nice right about now as he isn't short short... ETA - besides his head LOL! OH likes to make him have a mohawk. What is your westies name??
  19. I'm trying to think what i had Harvey (my westie) on when he was that age as i don't remember him popping that much..but that was a while ago now, he is 3 years old now. I have only just started to re-introduce dry food to harvey's diet (he has been on BARF/homemade diet for a while) so cant help, but one which he did well on was SuperCoat Special care, chicken and rice or similiar i only changed from this to hills oral care as my boy unlike yours can't for the life of him CHEW a chicken neck without gagging , maybe have a chat to your local pet supply store and see what they say. You'll find most vets will probably try and sell you what they sell at their surgery. PICS PLEASE!
  20. I would try some malesab as suggested leave on for 10 or so minutes and rinse and DRY well. Check out your garden too - although if it was something like that you would think it would be all paws? Is she stressed at all? What is her diet?
  21. Is it Vacc's in general or just the C5 vacc that causes the reaction? Harvey wasn't done last year, he is three years old this year and i have never given him the C5. Booked in on saturday for a check up and vaccination, told the vet not the C5, so what one would he get? *mind gone blank*.. will he be ok? Or should i not get him done?
  22. Thanks for the heads up. My boy is booked in this weekend for his vacc, he wasn't done last year and i am not going to get the c5 - never have as i dont see the point. Would the normal one still cause a reaction like this?
  23. $10.00 could just about feed my boy for two weeks albeit he is only a little guy. Lenards and cheap greens (mostly asian greens) are fantastic plus other fruit and vege - he likes zuchini at the mo , a couple of tins of homebrand sardins and he is set... and loves it. *ahh that reminds me.. have to get some carasses tonight and make up some food for 1 kg of pet mince (ground chicken carcass) from lenards it cost me $1.00, the vege, well, that depends on what i get and the fish is about .60c or less per tin. I buy a a few necks/wings while i am there for him and his cat for some added crunch and stock up on the meatier bones when i have a spare few dollars and when the butcher has them to get some lamb necks etc.
