  1. I know it wont kill him - but tell the dog that! No probiotics as such but I have been giving him yogurt with probiotics in it (Jalna Bio-dynamic Organic). I have a feeling that the necks might have been the problem ....or even too much roo meat at once. I also stopped the scourban on the day that he was ill again and he ate a lot of rough grass which seems to irritate his tummy too. So maybe a combo of a lot of things. I was planning on keeping him on the carrot/boiled chicken mix for a couple more days then slowly adding some raw meat back in. Possible 50g at a time increasing with each meal? (for a dog that eats approx 1kg of food per day) The last lot of meat I gave him was around 200g so might have been a bit rich for him He had had 200g of raw chicken breast with his morning meal that day too and a small neck. I've been splitting his meals into 3 now over the past few days too which seems to be helping. Poor boy gets very hungry on a bland diet and 3 small meals are easier to digest. When I do give him bones though what should I start with? I was thinking necks as they are so small... but didn't consider the fat content. he has a lot of roo bones usually (spine/tail) which are low fat but they are obviously much bigger..
  2. Not particularly fatty. I started him on some raw chicken breast, then a couple of very small necks (which are fatty I guess) at the following meal and when he handled that alright I gave him some roo mince mixed in with the chicken/rice meal. The following moring he was off his food and that night he ended up with the runs again. Being that we've never done this before I might have moved a little too quickly?? I don't think it's a sensitivity to any type of meat (well I hope not anyway) as he's been on the same diet for quite some time now with no probs... Haven't tried these but that will be the next option if we can't get things settled.
  3. Discussed this with the vet just last week when my Staffords were done at 8 weeks. Protocol is 8 weeks, 12 weeks, 16 weeks and 12 months. Apparently most vets are no longer recommending that puppies be vaccinated at 6 - 7 weeks as they used to. It is now 7 - 8 weeks. I've been doing it this way for years so it is interesting that the vets are coming into line with what I (and other breeders) have always done, rather than expecting us to come into line with them! 12 months, or 12 months after the last vaccine? (so 16 months?) I was told Kei was due again 12 months after his last vacc so the bolded part above confuses me ;) I've also read/heard that pups will never have full immunity from a vaccine unless it is given after the age of 6 months Does anyone know if there is any truth in this? In regards to the OP- Kei was done at 6-7 weeks old with the Protech C3 vacc at his breeders vet and was due for his 2nd at 10-11 weeks. I'm quite sure that it is 10 days after the 2nd vaccine that they are covered? But personally I would give it until 14 if you can to be on the safe side :D In our case our local vet uses a different brand/protocol and instead does the puppy vaccs at 6-8, 12 and 16 weeks. So Kei ended up having 2 further vacs at those times with Companion C5 rather than just the one C3 Protech vaccinne if that makes sense. (Though if I could do it all again I would stand my ground and only give him a C3 rather than let the vet pressure me into giving the C5 vacc ) Kei is now due for his annual booster but with his recent tummy upset it's looking like he will be close to 17 months by the time he is ready. After that I have decided to titer test rather than annual vaccs
  4. Kei has just had his first major tummy upset and therefore has been put on a bland diet to recover. I originally had him on boiled chicken and rice as per the vets instructions, then after a few days of all going seemingly well I started to re-introduce some other foods. First plain natural yogurt which was handled well, then sardines, then an egg -all without a problem. Then I started to re-introduce raw meat again. Now somewhere around here things went awry and he ended up with the runs again ;) I think part and parcel of it was the rice as Kei rarely eats any form of grain and this was a real overload of it. He's now off the rice and eating boiled chicken with raw pureed carrot and a little plain yogurt and is handling this well (as off last night we actually have solid poop again ) But what I'd like to know is how do I go about re-introducing his normal food again? When do I start? And what do I start with? How do other raw feeders (BARF & Prey diet) go about this? Thanks
  5. In my first session I am bouncing around like an idiot and Kei is looking at me like 'what the hell are you doing?' He then proceeds to lie down and pretend it's not happening ..and mine is on video So yes, we have improved somewhat from there Huski- I have seen a video of yours (very early module 1) when your cat starts chasing Daisy's leash mid session. Love it! Completely cracked me up
  6. Yep, but only cos I'm so bloody stubborn that I refuse to give up
  7. Hi Laeral He he, we are having our up's and downs too. Unfortunately in our case the problem lies more with the handler and her terrible training skills than the dog Thanks for the words of encouragement Huski
  8. I do this too I save the stock from the boiled chicken and then water it down slightly and give it to Kei to drink after his meal. He enjoys his 'soup' and I worry less about dehydration. Just don't over-do the liquid or your dog might vomit it back up again, give her small amount though and it wont hurt at all
  9. Ridgie X Dunno what the cross is though?? Maybe a Lab or Mastiff x. A lot of people tend to refer to large x bred hunting type dogs as 'Bull Arabs' (though I dont think true Bull Arabs are a cross?) so possibly he is crossed with something like that? Or even 2 Bull Arab types with Ridgie in both their backgrounds But I definitely see Ridgeback in there too
  10. You should have told her that sqealing, running kids will send some dogs into prey drive Most certainly does with mine! Poor Charlie, I don't think he would hurt a flea let alone a child :p
  11. :p :p My idiot husband loves to hype Kei up to the point where he is zooming around and body slamming, thinks it's great fun. Well he did up until a few weeks back back when one of Kei extra enthusiastic body slams resulted in broken glasses, a blood nose and a black eye Since then he's a little more careful
  12. I want an Earl!! He is gorgeous KelpieHoundMum. Those ears! Those wrinkles! :p I just want to squish his wrinkly puppy face
  13. I completely agree. While we don't have a 'club' as such where I am, Mica did not do well in a class environment. She got bored VERY quickly and turned her attention to trying to raz up other dogs. She learned things very fast, but hated the length and repetition of classes. I'm sure not every club is like that, but that is my experience and the only opportunity available to me other than Steves program (other than a 2 hour drive each way). I for one am grateful that he does offer the program as we would be pretty lost by now without it. We may use the classes later on down the track as ness said, using it as distraction training around the outside of the actual class. I'm with you laeral. Country town, nearest city is a 350km drive, and I have a dog that did terribly with repetative group obedience classes. Having someone who is will to tailor a program to my dogs induvidual needs and guide me through it step by step is a Godsend :p
  14. Sounds similar to what Kei has had over the past week He seemed to get better and then last night went down hill again yesterday with the runs, wouldn't eat or drink and I was ready to rush him off to the vet first thing this morning. However today he is bright and energetic and wants to eat so I'm just keeping an eye on him for now. Hasn't pooped yet today so I'm still w a i t i n g for that one his diagnosis was dietry indescretion or gastritis too. Must be getting around :D Hope your girl is okay.
  15. Feeding your dog meat without any bone is going to cause an imbalance in the diet. The 'bony bits' are what makes the diet complete. I'd continue what you are feeding but ditch the rice and the stew. Adding a bit of meat to the dry food won't hurt, adding minced carcusses or RMB's is even better, but if you want to feed a home made natural diet it needs to be RAW and balanced. Search the health forum here and you will find HEAPS of info on raw feeding Hills Science diet is probably not the best dry food out there either..
  16. So jealous! I saw those at Steve's last QLD workshop. I want one It would be excessive though seeing as I rarely use the one I have now He he, it is good - really light and easy to hold. I often walk Kei down to the oval on it for training sessions (only giving him about 4ft during the walk though -not the whole leash) and find it so easy to use that way. With my other long line I wouldn't ever do that in case it slipped from my hands, but the grip on this really makes a difference and seems to stop it from knotting too :D Yeah they are not on the website, you will have to email Steve. I have a 33ft BlackDog line but it's not nearly as good. The clips on the standard 15ft and 33ft lines are only medium sized, but BlackDog will custon make you one with a stronger clip for a few extra $$ if you request it through their site. *sp
  17. The local produce stores all have them in small bags. Maybe just ask if you don't see them out. I'm in the country - we don't have a local produce store where I am Well we did have but they closed down last year Does anyone know where you can buy these online (but in small amounts). I wouldn't mind trying some out but have only seen them in massive boxes and don't want to be lumped with 5kg's of them if Kei decides he doesn't like them We use the Kong biscuits. Not for training, only one in the Kong when I go out. Not the cheapest biscuits in the world but they last me a while, I can buy them locally and I am happy with the ingredients (when compared to other brands like Supercoat/Hills/IAMs etc.) The Kong biscuits have no preservatives either. For training treats we use something much smaller like tiny pieces of cheese, chunkers or even cat biscuits I've got 4 x 2's (Bestcare/Box 1) brand. Got a few boxes of them here - happy to send you a couple so you can try them if you can't find them locally. They are what I give Riley - get gets one once or twice a week with dinner. Thanks wagsalot that's exactly what I'm after. Can you PM me with postage costs for a couple of biscuits to try out?
  18. Bumpety Bump... Only 3 and a half more months to go :p
  19. Me too ;) It is a bit pricier than the lunge lines you can buy from horse supply stores etc but the quality is great. Me 3 I have the grippy one. Love it! :p

  21. Although be careful - I had a bit of a time over something being mentioned, proven it wasn't, yet it caused a hiccup in my claim for something else. When I said 'mentioned' I meant breifly mentioned verbally Erny. If it has been mentioned in notes or discussed as a possible cause of an issue (even if later proven otherwise) then I can see how it would cause a problem I know that when my vet does a call back anything that is discussed is noted down in the animals history... Beth- See if your vet can give you a print out of your dogs history and go from there
  22. If it has only been mentioned and not noted or diagnosed than no, it's not a pre-existing condition. If I was in your situation I would be getting insurance NOW - as in today Most companies will pay accident cover immediately (after the first 24 hours of cover) BUT for illness it's usually a month. So if something crops up in that first month it is a pre-existing condition. When you submit your first claim you will be asked for a copy of your dogs full medical history, this is how the company determines if the condition is 'pre-existing' or not. There is also a claim form which your vet needs to fill out and sign. I have insurance through PIA and wouldn't be without it
  23. Yes you can import a cropped dog. BUT- you cannot show it and i think there may be some restrictions on things like dog sports etc... It is very expensive to import and there are a lot of things to consider before you make that decision. A pup would not be flown over at 8 weeks, the breeder will hold it back for a lot longer and once it reaches Australia the dog will have to be quarantined which is not cheap either (see here: http://www.dolforums.com.au/index.php?show...c=166832&hl=) By the time the puppy is home with you, you will have missed out on some important stages of its life too. Is there a particular reason why you are interested in importing? Is there a certain line that you're interested in? You may be able to find similar lines over here with enough research Is it the cropped ears that interest you? (Not having a dig, just curious )
