Fair enough, it sounds like you are trying I think with a dog like this you really need to have the time and inclination to be able to work through these issues and while some people are able to take on that challenge and enjoy it others just can't manage it - not because they dont want to but because their circumstances dont allow for it. Sounds like this is what has happened wth you?? Personally if it was me I'd give it more time. But if you are sure then giving him back sooner rather than later is the best thing for all. You've ended up with not only a high energy breed but an adolecent one at that. Not a dog that I would expect to be calm and well behaved at all! There are lots of other lower energy breeds out there that might suit your family better and many of them are large breeds too (if that's what you're looking for).

Sorry to hear that it's not working out for you. Just a question (and no not flaming) but has anyone suggested that you give Hank more mental stimulation/training throughout the day rather than just physical exercise. Things like Kongs/food toys, puzzle toys, lots of short training sessions in the backyard etc?? You might find that when you can't take him out for his hour walk in the morning that a few short bursts of training through-out the day might calm him down? That way you dont have to worry about leaving the house and walking with a pram - just make sure the kids are safe inside and train in your backyard Perhaps you are already doing that though and it's not working. But if you haven't tried it give it a go. If you feel that you've tried everything and the dog is just not suitable then there is no shame in returning him. It's much better than confining him in the backyard alone or dumping him in the pound in 6 months time because he was 'just too much'

Ah okay. I have a dog who cannot tollerate an empty stomach (has been this way since he was a baby puppy and is now 18 months old) so rather than fasting him I just train around meal times when I know he'll be hungry. Fasting doesn't work for him as it just makes him miserable and less willing to train, which is of course the opposite of what I want. I was just curious to know what you'd suggest for dogs in that situation
-
Aidan, what would you do with a dog who vomits on an empty stomach? Would you still fast them prior to a training session?
-
Thanks Dyzney I never thought of the protein content of the gelatine! That makes sense. Oh well, they didn't quite work out for training treats but perhaps I will be able to use them to bump up Kei's energy when needed
-
Thanks for the ideas I've tried the dried fishies before and they are good! I need soft food for this training though so they're out unfortunately. I think we've found a winner with the sardine soaked roo though Haha, I've threatened to cook up all the meatballs and send them in to OH's work for afternoon tea ;)
-
Thanks t-time. I'm using the treats to train in food drive so they need to be exceptionally high value I had a go last night and used around 300g mince, 2 eggs (I really only need one!), some grated fresh parmesan, sardines (I wanted stinky treats ) and then enough oatmeal and a little breadcrumbs to get it stiff enough to roll into balls. I also added the gelatine 'just in case it did anything' lol. This made well over 200 of them though! So we experimented lol, one tray in the oven for 5 mins, one in the freezer and one in the fridge. The ones in the oven cooked nicely and ended up pretty much looking and feeling like chunkers - but a little more rubbery. The fridge ones seem to have set well too, though are a little sticky when squeezed. I tasted one of the oven baked balls and it was :nahnah: although Kei seemed to think they were okay. As an after-thought I also chopped up some roo meat into tiny pieces and soaked it in the remaining sardine oil. Well... I pulled a meatball out of the fridge this morning along with the container or sardine infused roo. Any guess which one the dog went mental for? Blah, now I have 200 meat balls that I probably wont use and hands that stink to high heaven of sardies and roo
-
I'd like to make up some training treats for my dog, similar the VIP chunkers maybe but with raw roo. I'm thinking about using a satin balls type recipe but omitting the extra oil and molasses and of course using lean roo as opposed to fatty beef. The idea I have in my head is roo mince, eggs, oatmeal, sardines, some finely grated hard cheese and perhaps a little garlic mixed to the right consistancy for them to hold the ball shape. I was debating about adding breadcrumbs to thicken it up if needed. I've also done a google search for recipes and noticed that most have gelatin in them. Why? Is this a neccessary ingredient? Does it help hold them together? So... does anyone have any ideas on if this is gonna work? Or am I going to end up with a big crumbly mess? I really want them to be raw not cooked but I need something that will hold its shape... Ideas please? edited as I missed something out lol

Adelaide K9 Force Seminar - 8th May
Red Fox replied to MsKatie's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
;) I am sure Pele will be willing to supervise and ensure it all gets eaten ;) Secret Kei - I have a bloodhound - I am going to need several towels The trip there should be fun with all that food packed up in the boot anf the dog in the back seat - he may well chew his way through the seat to get to it Note to self - wear clothes that don't show drool I feel for you KHM. Mines not a big drooler at all and I still manage to leave the house most days to find I have a nice big drool mark on my leg (or mud, or a combo of both) Haha, I think I might stick to wearing old trackies on the day, at least I wont mind the drool Perhaps you will need a raincoat too? -

Sounds good KHM I can only imagine how much drool there's gonna be when th dogs smell that chicken lol. Note to self - bring a towel -
Disagree with compulsary desexing Disagree with breeding a cross bred mongrel because Bet you have friends that want a Ferrari too. Are you gonna buy them one? Perhaps the laws should concerntrate more on unregistered breeding and less on desexing...

I had a look on eBay and was unable to find them. They must not sell there anymore....

There's a BARF pattie recipe in the Ian Billinghurst book 'The BARF Diet' I'd also recommend you read that and 'Give Your Dog A Bone' if you are intererested in feeding a raw diet. The first book (the barf diet) is a basic rundown of the BARF diet, what it involves, why you should feed it and the pattie recipes for both dogs and cats. The second book (give your dog a bone) goes into a lot more detail on what you can feed and how to feed it. They also cover ratios (meat to veg to bone etc) and recommended feeding amounts. You can buy them from here: http://www.barfaustralia.com/products.php?pid=2

I've bought from the second link (this one: http://www.cloudk9.com.au/index1.html) and had no troubles with them. But that was well over a year ago so perhaps they have changed/moved their site ;) Try searching on eBay. i know they used to sell there too so you might be able to contact them that way.

Just to clarify, I have no problem with breeders who charge more for superior/imported lines, or have a preference for type (including colour). Only with those that breed for colour alone and then charge an obscene amount for the pups. Exactly ;) If the breeder you are looking at is well regarded and happen to specialise in the colour you want then go for it. Just be sure that they are breeding for the whole package
-
Maybe not with this boy.. but next? Nope, next dog will be a girl - possibly working lines though rather then ANKC Still, it's a long way off though so who knows what will happen between now and then
-
Seriously? They are gorgeous!! There will be a lot of photo regardless on what my decision will be (but i'm leaning on getting is if she is awesome as what the breeder has been telling me!). Pity we can't talk you into the show ring yet. ;) Me or SecretKei? You! my boy is on limited so I'll never make the show ring

I bought all my Kongs online, mostly from eBay. There are some cheap sellers out there if you look around, I think I paid around $28 for my XXL sized black kong and $20 for the XL sized. The large puppy Kongs I picked up for around $13 from memory. I can't remember the seller but if you do a google search and an eBay search you can certainly find the products cheaper then RRP. I just bought my Ridgie a Kyjen toy (it's the Marmot lol) He really loves it and I was pretty impressed with the quality. We've also got Tuffie toys and while they are tough they are expensive too. Unfortunately they dont get played with a lot though. Cuz toys and i-squeaks/JW toys are pretty good too. They are tough, squeaky and most dogs love them. I bought most of my puppy toys from either Big W or Cheap as Chips. They didn't last all that long but I was able to buy a few and rotate them, then just throw them out when they got ratty. Strangely enough my boys favourite toy when he was a puppy was a piece of material that he ripped out from under the old couch lol. He would prefered it over everything until it fell to pieces.

Sounds like you have it all sorted CW. I'm sure that between your vet and your breeder you will be able to come to an appropriate compromise Can't wait to see pics of your new puppy! I saw a lovely Japanese Spitz over Easter (on holidays with its owners) and almost fell out the car window trying to get a closer look ;)

Yep, this is what I meant. Nothing wrong with chocolate labs at all, they are certainly within the standard. But a good chocolate should be no more valued than a good yellow, or black lab either :D If it was me I'd first be looking at the health and confirmation of the dogs, how the puppies were raised and socialised, temperament, breeding practices etc. Then raise the issue of colour with your chosen breeder and see what they say. They may be planning an upcomming litter which is likely to have chocolate coloured pups in it. In that case it more a 'wait and see' then anything else. If you are really serious about it you may have to wait longer and through a couple of litters (and years) to find the right puppy. It may turn out that the most suitable puppy for your family might be the only yellow in a litter of chocolates. Then it's going to be up to you to decide whether you take that puppy or wait for another. Good luck with it all though. I wish I could recommend you a breeder but not having had much to do with Labs I'd rather leave that for someone who has more knowledge/first hand experience on the matter
-
Okay, fair enough Perhaps pick your vet first (one that you are entirely comfortable with) and see what they have to say. If your chosen vet wont desex at 5 months then have them explain why and then take it up with your breeder. My contract said that my boy needed to be desexed between 9 and 15 months but after a lot of thought I decided that I wanted to leave it longer than that. I had a good chat to his breeder about it, explained my reasons and she was/is more than happy to let me keep him entire for the time being. If you have a decent relationship with your pups breeder I'm sure she will have no problems with you getting her desexed at 6 months rather than 5, it probably wont make a major difference anyway. Though I can understand your reasoning about not wanting to deal with a dog in season. Oh, and good luck with meeting the puppy this weekend! I hope it all works out for you :D
-
Why do you want the puppy done before the age of 5 months CW? Not having a dig at all, I'm just curious
-
$1800 seems like a LOT for a lab :D From my experience most breeders of purebred dogs will sell their pups from around the $800 mark and up (some less) with the average being around the $1000 mark. Some breeds do tend to sell for a little more but I would have thought with Labs being such a popular breed that prices wouild not be sky high for the average pet (limited register) dog Do the prices reflect the colour? I'd run a mile from someone who bred for colour or sold certain colours for more than others...

I make up a huge bucket (whizzed up in the food processer in several batches) once every 4-6 weeks then freeze in ice-cube trays. I do the freezing in batches over 2 days using about 10 trays for each lot then tip the cubes into a big container and store in the freezer. Then I just take a out a few cubes each night to defrost :D In use fruit, veg, eggs (inc shells), garlic, parsley, omega oil and a small amount of kelp in mine. As far as it being 'mushy' it has to be mushy, it should be like slop!

Urgently Need Behaviouralist In South Australia
Red Fox replied to Kirty's topic in Training / Obedience / Dog Sports
Steve from K9 Pro is in Adelaide next month. I think he still has one private consult still available on Thursday the 6th of May. There's also a seminar on Saturday the 8th which has a section on aggression :D http://www.k9pro.com.au/categories.php?cat...TICKETS-ON-SALE
