  1. I took my Newf puppy with us to dog training initially and she met a lot of other dogs and people..But we also know all the dogs were vaccinated. We take our dogs wherever we are allowed to take dogs. There was actually an out break of kennel cough that a lot of dogs got from a single vet visit.........Katy had been there, but we were lucky and she only had a couple of coughs. Some dogs were really sick. So where do you set the limits.
  2. I don't have a list.........We just take our dogs wherever we are allowed to go with dogs. My now 6month old newfie is a very confident happy girl, because she has come along to lots of social doggy event at our kennel Club. And in this way she has met a lot of other dogs and people. Not rushed and calmly. This has also exposed her to a lot of different noises. We have taken her swimming and had fun and lots of visits to the vet, with out any reason, except to stand or sit on the scales...........we did two different puppy classes so she could be in touch with more dogs of the same age. And she goes to obedience and does short parts of the beginners class. I am lucky, because my pup has two very obedient and confident mature dogs at home. I personally do not believe in a cutoff time..........keep taking your dog everywhere and most of all make it fun, Good luck
  3. ;) You'll be pleased to know my Big girl loves GSD's
  4. Wow, that is one very scary moment...........I am glad all is well
  5. I feed two equal amount twice a day............I have Newf's and i try to prevent bloat, but I am not even sure if it is relative. It is just been the way we have done it for so many years (30+)
  6. Well maybe they can own a Bullshit one day (Bull terrier X Shitzu)
  7. It will be a long ride.........Your heart is in the right place, good luck
  8. The one thing we have to be very careful of if we keep breeding all these mixes, is that we loose some of our beautiful purebreeds forever............This is even so in the chicken/ducks/geese/pigs/horse and cattle world. It is important to maintain pure breeds as best we can. Some breeds have already been lost forever. It is such a shame. So i am a pure breed supporter, even though i do have a gorgeous Border Colli X Golden. I would never purposely breed a cross breed.
  9. I am so sorry Jessy is not well.......In the newfoundland world that could be taken as an early sign of "bloat" and some dogs, especially rescues, will still eat when they are unwell. Bloat is like colic is in horses. It can cause rotation of the stomach in large dogs or just blockages in some dogs. With Symptoms like that I would be visitting the vet. Can you maybe just take her in at lunch time and leave her......Or as i have done in the past go off sick (with worry anyway) and take her in. Hoping all is well..........
  10. My newfs love any other newf.we have gone to newfie days with 24 plus other newfs and they have nearly all gone off lead and everyone has got on. Most had never met before. Our dogs also seem to prefer black dogs, especially labradors
  11. I didn't read all the reply's.........But the umbilical system is another form of puppy training. but it is best used with crate/confined area training. My puppies are crated at night, but when we are home during the day we use the umbilical system. Dog/puppy is on leash and they are where you are. It can be very tiresome for the puppy/you and you will still use a crate/confined area or safe outside area, when you are unable to be attached or for sleep time. It is also a good way to retrain adult rescue dogs if not potty trained. You are more aware of the dog and always know what they are up to and where. It is also very good for bonding and training on lead. We use crates to a minimum, but once our dogs are poty trained they roam the house and our screened in verandah's. Though they mostly just sleep
  12. IHave always had dogs and horses, have had newfs and multiple dogs since the 1980's. I will always have one rescue newf in my household Always been interested in having obedient well trained dogs. have had working dogs also since the eighties, Kelpies, to work sheep..... And my parents bred GSD's for the RAAF, Army and Police. My Dad was an Instructor too (very old fashioned ) I am now interested in obedience, but not really trialling and cannot wait for Rally O (obedience) to get off the ground in Australia, what a great way to do obedience
  13. What a shame.we travel in all weather, it gets about 45C here. As long as there is water mine are fine. The sand will be hard, just post op. were you insured? I hope so. Lots of get fit soon wishes for Barney
  14. Tessa is a cross breed.......Golden Retriever Dam and Border Collie Dog. A very clever dog........
  15. I have been thinking about the snake repeller thing, atleast in the smaller yard where the dogs are kept when we aren't home. The bluey was at our last house in the burbs. The only lizard I have seen here is a frilly, and damn it was fast. No chance the dogs getting to that. Whilst you are waiting for help, play a Boom box loud with thumpy music and have the boom box on the ground, between the house and the area the snake is. they hate the vibration and often leave an area. Not 100% sure if it will work, but cheap and worth a try. We are Rural too..........We have peacocks, geese and guinea fowl to keep them away Our geese have killed snakes and if they should get bitten it is not so traumatic loosing a goose
  16. Gorgeous photos. Xanthe and I hope to see you again - at the next Newf club fun day maybe?! We hope to see you too in the future, we are going to a newfie day near Wollongong on the 21st< cannot wait :D
  17. I will always revere the German Koolie..............My husband was saved from a raging bull when he fell in a yard, whilst unloading bulls. A friend's Koolie ran into the yard and grabbed the Bull by the nose and held on. Our Blue Heller came from behind and they both kept the bull busy whilst hubby was helped out with only one broken rib. So For the German Koolie
  18. And some more Growing fast The Regal look First swim with guardian Annabelle Nearly five month old next to Annabelle Nearly six month old And of course last Friday
  19. She is our little Ray of Sunshine.....Always happy and sweet. She has been the easiest pup I have ever owned, She makes us smile........... So here is Katy growing up Day one already sitting when asked nine weeks old Not quite perfect And do you love me Nearly always in unison with Annabelle Playing with Tessa
  20. yes the Vit K needs to be continued and Platelets would be good......They need to do a clotting profile to see what he is up to Keeping fingers and paws crossed for this gorgeous boy.........I have gone through all of this with a friends dog, we ended up at Werribee
  21. I watched the whole series.....he is a darling, they were trying to peck his spots off :D
  22. Hes at home with me, I wont leave my dogs at the vet. If he needed to be on a drip I would just have brought him home on a drip. One of the advantages of living in the sticks i guess! I havent left his side as hes more settled when im with him poor old fella. Hes lying on the lougeroom floor bleeding happily away lol How it he going....have they given him anything for the bleeding, such as platelets or at least Vit K.....Ratsack (warfarin) is nasty stuff. And did they do a blood clotting test? Because you can do blood test that will give a level to see how serious it is I hope he is on the improve
  23. It doesn't matter I think....My Newfoundland is called Lady Annabella, we call her Annabelle............I am not sure how that fits with a newfoundland. Most have "boaty" names like Bosan, Captain or bear like names like Yogi or Grizzly. So I have Annabelle and Katy The only important thing is that the name means something to you
  24. I would not recommend agility for a Newf under ANKC rules. It's a big ask for such a heavy dog to jump so high. If you only wanted to train for fun, you'd be welcomed at our club and could jump a lower height but quite a few of the obstacles would be a challenge for a Newf to fit on/through. We train only for fun and not under any rules.....I think we are just there to give the serious guys a laugh, whilst they are getting their breath back. I would give it a go if and when we are allowed to have lower jumps. Annabelle loves to climb and the see-saw, it is her joy. But I will not put her on any scrabbles, which are too slippery or high. And her all time favorite are the tunnels. You can make your own newf style course like we have at home
  25. Yes it was only a cool 36C here...........We have had 42C+
