  1. This is my 6 month old baby starting her water training See Katy's water training post http://www.dolforums.com.au/index.php?showtopic=188019
  2. Katy went for her first retrieval in the river today........She is such a natural. We still keep the rope on the bumper, because the river has a definite flow. She loves it, she is a natural. Now we are just waiting for the puppy fur to go, so she won't sink as much She had five retrievals, with two fairly long ones.........Off leash and no life jacket ( Mike is an ex life guard, so he is quite good at retrieving dogs ). Too hot for the life-jacket...... I got it Dad !!!!! second retrieval I love this I am the cleverest girl
  3. MIne are on a RAW diet.............Lots of veggies, Beans, peas, carrots, pumkin and anything green, love anything really, but will drool for any melon or apple. The newf pup's, Katy, favorite treat is water melon, she adores it. She also like mandarins.
  4. Twicw a year they have this major "blow-out ...Tumbleweed time, But I groom mine at least weekly and trim bellies in Summer and it is no worse then our GSD's and Scotch Collies
  5. And some more Down the banks of the river Do some swimming Round up some cattle And Jump in the car
  6. I have had a few newfs..............I had a discussion with someone who told me in no uncertain terms that newfs are just quiet lazy lie-about dogs, who do nothing. I have owned newfs since the eighties and all of mine have been active dogs. We keep them quiet, whilst growing (if possible) but after that it is hiking, obedience and natural agility. So I out out some pics to show him and thought I would post them A lot of people think newfs are quiet gentle giants who lie around doing nothing............. Not so clean puppy..........Always busy puppy swims three times a day They just don't lie around quietly......Climbing newf, favorite pass-time Crossing a log bridge Running newf..........With no reliable brakes = injured owner knees
  7. Because we added a puppy not so long ago (nearly six months old)..........It was a bit nerve racking to leave at first. the first times were with Katy crated for short periods, 1/2 hour onto an hour and a few longer periods. When she was fully potty trained we did the same again. We make absolutely no fuss when we leave. We often just say "stay" when one goes with us to the door. But mostly they just lie and look at us leaving or as newfies often do, just keep on sleeping. we don't make much fuss when we get home either. We do have an outside kennel room and run, which we use when we go away for very long periods of ten hours or if it is very hot. Because the run has a beautiful deciduous tree in it and they have their little pet pool to play in. But mostly they are indoors........Sometimes you just have to "bite the bullet" and trust them............Good luck
  8. Please remember that the only way dogs cool off is through their feet and panting...........So your dog could overheat. They are used a lot in winter in the USA/CAnada to protect form snow
  9. From the age of two, I had a GSD as my shadow, until I was seventeen............The day Odin Died is still the one of the saddest days of my life. I adored him and he me. We were a team My Parents bred GSD's and were very good dog owners and trained dogs for the Army and Police. My Younger sister also had a GSD called Karin, She only lived to be ten, but they were also inseparable. Due to the work my Dad did, Civil Engineer, we moved around a lot and four GSD's went everywhere with us. Our dogs were indoor dogs and they just went wherever we went as kids out and about. people would be shocked today, but our dogs travelled everywhere off lead. We used to meet up with other kids and dogs all of lead. I still have such so many fond memories of those days
  10. We used to have a Landseer Newfoundland many years ago and everyone asked if she was a Saint Bernard and they would argue if you told them she was a Newfy " no she is not they are black"............A lot of people still ask "what dog is that", with the Black newfs, some people are just breed ignorant. I always ask if I am not sure. I would not have guessed your pup. I have only ever seen full grown Borzoi's
  11. Tell me when you are a going concern..............One crazy lady with three BIG dogs and a hubby will come and stay.
  12. They might cover anything that is not related to the previous injury.....that is what my Medibank private fine print states regarding previous disorders
  13. I have very quiet enormous dogs and people are often turned off when you say three very large black fluffy dogs.............they are well behaved indoor dogs, and very social and dog friendly who also love to be outside. would you allow three big dogs? I would need to have somewhere to wash the dogs. I would always bring my own bedding and food......But would need a fridge for storage, because we feed RAW Mostly the place would only be a place to sleep and eat breakfast. I love the idea of an off lead beach, sound like fun.....We are always looking for new beach holidays :0
  14. Need an option to show the dogs was like that, but has come good with training. My newf rescue was dog /people aggressive, not potty trained, pulled like a horse, jumped on furniture/benches. But she made it and is great, both socially and at home. She is only just a little shy with some men still, but no aggression anymore. If you put in the time and effort you can be lucky and come out the other side with the perfect dog......My Sweet Annabelle
  15. So sorry to hear about your dogs hips, but if it is pre-existing no-one will touch it. I have my dogs, Newfoundlands, in Medibank Private. Mine are healthy sofar and have no pre-existing conditions. I pay $52.00 per month for the three of them. But I pay the first $500.00 on a event, but only once per dog. I only have my dogs in a fund just in case they require big Ortho Surgery or have to have major Surgery, not for the regular stuff........I can always scrape the $500.00. But a $12,000- $15,000 bill would be beyond me. It gives me some peace of mind. Someone i know had a bilateral hips done on their GSD..All paid for by Medibank, except the first $500.00. So yes it is worth it. I chose the $500.00 Gap, sothat the monthly payment was reduced.
  16. Oh my, such a sweet smile....very sad RIP sweet girl

  19. I was good until three month ago when i got my newfie pup.She is not allowed to go for long walks and I hate leaving her behind. But she is 5 1/2 month now and we should restart. though it get very hot here at present. No excuse today, it is cool Went for a long walk alongside Lake Hume yesterday........Will have to go for one after work
  20. Ditto.......My dogs are scardy cats (newfoundlands) and they would bark if left outside. They would imagine big monsters. Especially our newf rescue, she hates the dark. She like to sleep on her bed inside. three dogs and they are quiet......
  21. That is what I did.........My answers were long and I made a point of the fact that they need to take individual dog behaviour in consideration not it's breed..........Some of the nicest dogs I know are on the dangerous dogs list. It is all about who is on the other end of the lead
  22. Each kennel is individual, but we have one nearby, Margot's, and the dogs love it there. They get a lot of human contact and one of my newfs even went back inside after pick-up, because a toy was left behind in the run. that means to me that their is no fear at all It might be a good idea if you can find a good kennel, maybe just visit a couple before and get the feel of the place. I prefer leaving my dogs in a kennel, which is safe and secure to friends who always offer to take them. I would be too worried leaving them in anyones yard except our own. We don't leave ours very often and usually only for one night. Leaving your dog at a kennel will be good if the event is likely to make him nervous/anxious. It will aslo mean you can relax. And a practise run at the engagement sounds like a good idea. Our dogs just love it when we have visitors or parties, so they stay home. They love meeting and greeting. I would be more likey to leave them at a kennel ( though we have our own very large kennel room/run), because some realatives might not cope with three large dogs.
  23. So gorgeous and it looks like a really cheeky glint in her eye She is very cheeky, but adorable and very quick at learning. She has our other two wrapped around her little dew claw
  24. There are people who are having their dogs operated on to try and reduce drooling...........They do something with the glands and this gives issues with the dogs digestive system. because the drool is caused by the flappy lips. All dogs produce saliva and it is the first part of the digesting process. Also some disreputable breeders in other countries (hopefully not here) tell people that they are breeding newfs that drool less. A bit like designer dogs. The dog grows up, still drools and ends up in Newf rescue if lucky or a pound. I am in contact with many USA and Canada newf rescue people and they state this is quite a common reason to get rid of the poor old newfs
