  1. Our breeder re-homes and does rescue of the breed. I have had two rescues from her and one re-home. I take my hat off to anyone that dedicated to the breed. but I can accept that it must be almost impossible for some, due to lack of space
  2. Still won't do much harm...........I would just contact them and talk. If they replace, I personally would be happy
  3. Oh Wow.....that was very interesting As to the ad, I wondered if it was a typo and meant two labs Yellow (golden) and Black. I know our newspaper locally is just full of typo's
  4. Who would be at fault? Edited to add that the company i bought from makes the treats themselves. It is something that can happen to anyone and if they are weavils they would not have hurt your dog. If you have ever bought horse feeds or bird seed you will have come across it quite often. As long as they are happy to replace, I would not get to annoyed with any company for it happening. It is a bit like a locust plague suddenly arriving. no one has really any control. they might have accidentally imported weavils with a product they bought. Just bad luck, part of life and life goes on
  5. They won't cost that much...Even using the best food. I bet you are exited about the pup
  6. We went through Cyclone Tracey with dogs and we stayed in Darwin post Cyclone, in terrible conditions because of the dogs. no way would we have left them. All abandoned dogs were shot. There was no rescue service for pets out of Darwin. My second event was, one of our dogs about twenty years ago got his collar ( hence no collars when swimming now) attached to a branch in the Murray River. It was pulling him under. I undressed down to bra and panties and went after him...........hubby came from afar and jumped in clothes and all. this was June in Albury B.....y cold. We detached the collar and both swam back freezing. But to add we both have been life guards and can swim. Hubby was a Bondi Lifesaver. Same dog at Coffs Harbour, got pulled out into a rip. hubby went after him and swam him back the LONG way safely. I think if you are able to and not foolish you should try to do your best. I probably would never go back into a burning building, because fire terrifies me. But I would never just leave mine. One of us would have to make sure they were OK
  7. I have three large dogs and No way do I spend $100.00 per week on their food. One is a pup newf. We feed RAW and source our food from a lot of different places, quite cheaply. Our Butcher is a Godsend and he keeps lots of meats, offal and bones for us. For which i pay $5.00/huge box. We grow our own veg or buy cheap in season. I use dried beans, peas, lentils etc which i blend to add. We use rolled oats to add. the Vit C and E, fish oil, glucosamine and seaweed maeal can be expensive. but since the advent of all the discount chemists, I wait for a good deal and buy up. I also have my dogs in Medibank Private. but not for the little things such as vaccinations. But for the possible big surgery. so far have not used it in the last ten years, but you never know. Accidents do happen and i could not pay out $5,000-$10,000 on the spot. The cover costs $53.00 per month. I find it very important Pups do eat a lot more in the first year (3x-4x more). My adult newf eats the same as my friends labradors. However weight is an issue in heart worm prevention, worming tablets and tick/flea prevention. Greater weight=greater amount of $$$$$"s
  8. It only leads to one problem............. Adult sleeping with dogs in bedroom As kids we always had our dogs (GSD's) in our bedroom, they were my friends and I am always grateful to my parents for allowing it........ and as an adult, our dogs have free roam of the house and usually end up in the bedroom
  9. My last pup came with receipt, Registration papers signed for transfer, chip paperwork signed for transfer, vaccination record and instruction on when due again and a note on heartworm, A few days of the food she was used to and an instruction puppy and feeding manual. Also an open offer to contact by phone or e-mail at any time To add, we had done all the health check of parents and previous siblings/relatives before and we were very familiar with the breed
  10. And I can add some more to show their social side Teddy, Katy's uncle with his cavalier friend Annabelle meeting the very small And this is a whole lot of newf with people at another day
  11. If you want quiet inside and social dogs..............Newfoundland. We have a nearly seven old pup and a fully grown and life is so peaceful. Playtime outside, Zoomies when it is cool. No chewing, obedient, happy and very loving/. we have had newfs for nearly over thirty years now, love them. Went to a newf day with twenty plus newfs last weekend at a of leash beach and not one incident. Most had never met before and were off leash and enjoying the picnic Some of the newf at little Austinmer Beach on Sunday Newfies everywhere
  12. Love it....what a good use for traffic cones. we use ours for training , figure eights etc. And luckily our dogs are not interested in them
  13. I can see katy sitting in the dam,she loves to swim on a warm day, from my desk.......Annabelle as per usual is at my feet. And Tessa is lying on the verandah keeping an eye on Katy, the pup.........
  14. I would never rely on an untrained dog .......But that said, my very super friendly newf in the past have growled at unsavory people. The first time was at a teller, when someone was hassling the person ahead of me and I walked nearer and my newf Jessy gave the most awesome growl and actually bared her teeth. Which i thought was impossible in a newf. The second time was, we live in a rural area on a property and we get a lot of people through our newfs are very happy social dogs. But one day a guy came t the gate and asked to use the phone, he said his car was broken down. i could not see a car. Well my newf Abbey went ballistic, barking and growling and standing between me and him. I just said I could not control my dog and he left. My hubby goes away for long times quite often and I must admit I feel very safe with my three dogs loose in the house. But with mine, I think a lot of people are impressed with the size, add growl to that and it is quite impressive. Our present newfs are again quite big......Katy is 45kg at six months and Annabelle is 53kg. Plus our Golden cross isn't small either. but they are very friendly social dogs with friendly happy people. I just hope their size turns people off ;)
  15. All our dogs are buried in our yard.............The only problem we ever had was Tessa lying on top of Zacky's grave for about two weeks. No dogs ever did anything to the graves. We have been here for a long time and we have six dogs buried here.
  16. We are off to a newfie meet this weekend and the vet here advised us to use Frontline for the trip. So we did them about 5 days ago. three big dogs is a very expensive deal $56.00 . I am glad I do not have to do this fortnightly. We do not have ticks or fleas where we live. But I did not want to risk it this weekend.
  17. I think as you get used to RAW, you forget about the ratio's....I have I make my own lupin/grain mix with a blender. Oats, rice, wheat, dried peas, beans, and any other cheap lupins I can get my hand on. this I blend in my faithful blender and add about a table spoon to their mince. If i do not have my own home grown veggies, I often buy the cheapest pumpkin and any other cheap leafy stuff and quick chop and blanche, to the freezer it goes in small parcels. I think veg is about 10% or if they are a little heavy in weight i make the veggie part larger. The meat content is very reliant on what i can get. it might be raw fish, any sort of meats and also the heart/kidney/tripe mix. My dogs get yogurt and tinned sardines daily...........One tin does three dogs (newfs). I check my dogs ribs and sometimes the feeding goes up and down according to that. Just remember in the wild their is no set diet. And my dogs get bones.......lots of bones. I do watch their poops a little, if too dry, I hold back on the bones and add a little olive oil or see if I can find some fatty lamb ribs for them. My dogs love fruit and melon of any kind is a treat for them. So is banana and one loves mandarins. To our diet I add kelp powder, Vit C for my growing pup. Vit E for all and fish oil capsules for all. My dogs look shiny and healthy and I have done quite well with their health (touch wood)........Our Kelpie just died recently and he had the most beautiful set of teeth at fifteen......we never clean teeth and all their teeth are and have been beautiful. Our vets always comment on their teeth. i am sure there is a lot more i do automatically.......I have been feeding RAW for over twenty years. i only ever fed dry for a very short period before that and pre- the dry period we fed home cooked food to our dogs Good luck
  18. Yes it seems a shame.....hope he finds a forever home. Maybe someone dumped him, so sad
  19. Oh Wow....Only three days and only a puppy, obviously not an aggressive dog. That is so sad.... Sounds like if you loose your dog in the Ipswich area and most likely other areas, you need to physically check the pounds, but three days is so unbelievable. They must have hearts of stone.........
  20. I could be wrong and you will have to read the label, but most smoked tinned stuff has a lot of sodium content/salt. So i would not use it Enjoy your tuna for lunch
  21. I use sardines, because of the bone content....I prefer springwater with no salt or i would use olive oil as a second. My number one choice is raw sardines, which i can get on a trip to Melbourne at Vic Markets. The tuna and salmon have the omega's and some salmon has also got the bones (which I like)
  22. I know from my many years with newfs, that I would go with your second option."Or do you think a dog with bite inhibition has the ability to modify their bite but can still choose not to and therefore can still bite hard and do damage?" I Have owned many newfs, who will guide their owner/ person to be rescued in the water or on land with a soft hold on a limb (arm or hand), as taught in rescue. Those same newfs i have seen in a dog fight, where they were attacked by aggressive dogs and almost shred these dog. until we got them to "leave"....They stopped dead and left the dogs.
