  1. not meaning to be rude, but most farmers would not want a pedigree one from non working backgrounds. they have a job to do... which the farmer can't do without the dog. a useless one is worse than no dog speaking from past experience. nothing worse than having a dog and having to bark yourself!
  2. playing the devils advo for a min.... it could be argued that farm dogs get more exercise and attention than the average dog in the burbs who's owner works 8 hours a day and spends his days in the back yard alone. most farms dogs are out 8 hours a day even if not "working" they go with the farmer in case. my neighbours and we are in a real farming are not 5 acres lots, you rarely see them without there dog in tow. often 3 or 4 in tow. yes there are times where they would be tied up for periods or yarded but it would be rare.
  3. i have to second what riff said. commercial large farms dogs are part of the workings, not realy treated better than a tractor untill proven. a proven dog however will be treated very well. a great bitch will have a life of hard work and hard breeding to supply that next elusive perfect worker. most of her offspring will however be culled. if a do gooder comes along then a few will be rescued or dumped at the local pound, but tis almost the same reality as the racing thoroughbred or racing standard bred. the wastage is huge. the average farmer would love a well bred and proven dog so it will increase there sales. i am not so sure that the breeder will be donating them "free" either... working keplies cost thousands.... so me thinks some money has changed hands here.
  4. as someone who has had to use a working sheep dog i can say.... our worst dog was the most awarded pure breed border collie i have ever had the misfortune to own. the only thing he wanted to heard was chooks! for lunch. he was terrified of sheep and cattle... would send him to his kennel for a week. to terrified to come out. there is more to breeding any sort of animal that just confirmation, the best confirmed animal may not tick other more inportant boxes like temperament, ability or brains. while jane might not know about doggie husbandry per say, she might have other animal husbandary skills which will mean she is in front of the average "town" (not meaning to put townie folks down) person.. like sheep births or horsey births or cattle births. also experience in overall care... from other places can be a huge help too.
  5. 'matians.... they love doing tricks and if you have a yard the dog will wander around and get some exercise.... leo fave pastime in cooler months
  6. thats a great idea mo3.... there could be an advertised time to talk to people for eg... maybe 12-1pm... after that it is not encouraged. my child gets on very well with most dogs even one that people say are not child friendly, they do really seem to like him. he goes to the shows to look at all the breeds, he has decided he is going to become a breeder and dog shower. heaven help me, as if the zoo we have now is not stressful enough. no just any shows either the royals no less! ;)
  7. when should they grow out of that sort of stuff? leo is called the grazier... he eats gravel off the drive way, brings it inside and drops on the floor, i am sure he has eaten shovel fulls of the stuff. yesterday while up the paddock he's chewing like manic dog.. i though he had found a bone, but no a stick of a tree. he's 2 this july and shows no sign of giving up his grazing habbit.
  8. oh and i forgot what i was going to say! douh! which is stupid people are every where and they seem to breed. i think you attitude plays a huge roll tho... an example.... we often get kids jumping in and out of carts if horse is tied up and slightly out of eye view. i find it hugely disrespectfully on the horse also potentialy damaging to the spine lots of huge thumps. parents often know nothing of horses so how could you expect them to see the bad in what the child is doing. i always ask the child if i jumped on your back splat would it hurt you? would you not be sad and feel sore? they always answer yes. it also gets them to know the reason why you ask them not to and teaches them. leaves them with a nicer impression as they know they did not mean to hurt the horse but know why not to do again. snapping and abusing does not further the image of anything let alone pure bred doggies. a show might be the only time some kids ever see a dog and might inspire them to get a pure bred if the experience its a great one for them. they really don't care about you..... they care about what they want tis human nature.
  9. yeah we do have a fleet of clydies hence i have recently acquired (12mo ago) a dally. live in far south nsw... like the bit where it snows....if i had a dollar for every time some one wanted to come here i would be a very rich woman! see we live past the black stump, well according to canberrans and sydneyites we do. we have black ones... so a bit out of the ordinary... my emails is the profile and feel free to come have a drive. the only thing you need to do is show up! :D we show as far out as gainmain and ardlethan... no further north than mossy vale.
  10. slaps the 'matian people oh beeehave.... :D your behaving like your dogs all silly..... next you lot will be hiding behind stuff to jump out and go boooo! (not like my dog does that) on a more serrious note.... you have to feel sorry for the puppie... at then end of the day.... what happens if puppy is not sold then is it pts? or would they dump it one dally rescue?
  11. well a puppy for $400.00.... i never saw any.... but that is what i got leo for fully vacced, not de sexed tho... and 10mo no puppy piddles..... he was at the most fun age too the teenage years.... keen to learn but still a great big puppy. best of both worlds. his life span should be at least 10 years so even if you take off one, i willl have him for 9 years at the min... not bad. although his purchase aint the spensive bit.... he seems to rooly like my vet... 5 visit this year for him alone. feel very sorry for the poor dear.
  12. as a parent how would you feel if a horse jump you and your stroller? thankfull i would think. friend of mine had a stroller thrust under her horse nose at speed complete with screaming child. horse cleared cleanly thank god. i think you guys should be thank full most of the doggie damaged is small... try a child grabbing a clydesdale in harnes on the flanks.... most of them have blinkers on and have no idea what has grabbed them. when he stood on my foot i had 3 broken bones... so a child would be crushed if stood on or kicked. i'm also not sure they they all expect you to give joy rides while waiting for classes... only to be told oh well he's just a common clummper...in a scabby cart!
  13. um yeah, not great... there should be laws regarding at what age they are allowed to be sold etc.
  14. um yes horus... yesterday i visited the big smoke.... went to the local pp in the mall.... they love to have me (frankly i am suprised i haven't been kicked out yet!) in a loud voice mention how could they sell a pure bred cross breed.... lots of ooooddles there yesterday spoodles, cavooldle, shitoodle ( too) i think every one had oooldles in it's tag.... the only pure animal in there was a rabbit and the kittens...rag dolls poa! i think not. we browsed while the sales lady was on the phone.... and kept talking re the rip and wool pulling... oh well shame all the customers walked out.
  15. looks a bit like an old time foxie hunting style of dog my grand father had. nice doggie. great ratter. long time past. looks like a fun loving doggie.
  16. please don't let human compassion get in the way of predjuce against a byb.... either way ..... puppies are only a few days away. not much you can type here can change that. if trouble does occur tho your advice could save a tiny life or not ...... papered or not.
  17. phoor sc you won't know your self. a cheap way to move house with big stuff is get some one who has a medium sized truck and pay them to drive the truck and help load the big stuff. cheaper than a mover. some one will know (where to get a hat) sure as god made widdle green apples !
  18. hey sc... haven't seen you in a while. how ya bin? guess tangos going well. not sure where you would buy a hat but in this house a mobile shade sail would be ideal. leo has been sunning his belly again! tonight it's GLOWING!
  19. my jrt is ball ocd.... he had rsi in his front paw after injuring it. kept hurting it, sometimes limping sometimes not. vet sugested anti in flams... and bed rest for 6 weeks not easy with him... he was only allowed out with me in sight and durring the day i made him come to work. where he sat in the car! his second ocd thing. sounds like a minor thing which may come good with rest.
  20. there is one way to get docs to act. IF you know the child is home alone, you call the police. you tell them child is home alone. they have to break down the door and remove the child. it is the law. docs will then be able to act. as the child has no carer and against the law to leave a child alone even for 5min. in the yard yes but off down the street no! i used to be a foster carer, plenty end up in care this way. if there is a nieghbour that will ring even better.
  21. va glad your still getting a doggie some time soon. my friend has papions nice little doggie. children do like to carry this size of dog but with a great temp.... the dog won't care. had a aussie terrior loved her to bits. i never thought of samoyed tho. another best friend had one and it was the same age as her son. the child and dog got on so well when the dog passed away the son was devistated. he was the most obedient dog i have ever met. i really relate to your liking all breeds, i have had heaps and am not really a poodle fan (sorry pf) or gsd i am not sure why. i could name a dozen breeds i would have... and haven't dachshunds Samoyed beagle great dane whimpet grey hound staffie those all without even thinking too hard.
  22. that's its not really a dumbmatain... or a dalstopuid...... the clown like antics get the dalstopid...as in hiding a 34kg dog behind a traffic cone... no you can't see him... why cause he can't see you. he likes to jump out and say boo! well i didn't know they were supposed to be till i taught him upteen dozen tricks... a lady that rescued them said hell if i can do that with leo in 8 mo... she will send all hers or personal training. they will do anything for the "right" reward in this house banana is the "right" reward. they can be bigish... people think of dallys as kelpie... or smaller. they are not really snappy, licky but not snappy. mine maybe not common... talks and talks and talks... woowing and chatting away. makes him great company.
  23. kai...while it may not be legal to crate your 10 yo.... i have to drag my 12yo out of the crate at times so the damn dog can get in! va.... as for my jrt suggestion i dare you in the old days to try my OH's russell to steal anything. lets just say if he got stopped for a breath test he would have to warn the officer not to put his hand in the car. he was also the reason why his house cleaner quit. i would not have trusted him not to bite even me. if he did not recognise me. my jrt is ocd with his ball... will run all day. they are very very loyal, but any that are re homed like 2 of ours they take along time to settle but will bond to just one human more than the others. they take along time to train.... the dally is a joy to do tricks with i find i gave up before the jrt learnt. although he does beg.
  24. hey chew i know we all get a bit het up about big or small our breed or someone elses... see there are a lot of breeds i have had... keplies, borders aussie terrior...corgies... maybe a corgie might be smart enough, but a heavy small/medium dog. the only reason i suggested a smaller smarter breed then named one.... is the poster likes smart thinking dogs.....to show there are options. but maybe the op should write a list of must have for the dog that would be perfect then peruse the breed pages or shows to see what fits. they need to find the right one. although i would not want to get a new dog with a small child... but as we had then already... they just worked. maybe they need to wait till their child is walking.... and able to use the dog as a sled! :) i know norty clydes! my child seems to be out growing the smaller dogs now we have a big one. he like to full on wrestle the big one...... worst of all the big wossy dog loves it!.... its the mummy that can't stand it! i can't talk too loud my child wants to take up showing and breeding! he wants a beagle a breed i have NEVER had! would love to but no experience of. he's 12! did i happen to mention we have 5 already!
