  1. I have heard that the long-coat Wei's are lower energy than the smooths.
  2. I just skimmed it, but it says domestic dogs didn't evolve from the wolf - but then says that domestic dogs evolved from a dog that evolved from a wolf!? It also says that most canids are not pack animals - what about wolves, wild dogs, etc?
  3. I agree with the greyhound suggestion. I have a greyhound puppy and a greyhound foster puppy and they are the nicest dogs.
  4. It sounds like everyone else was slowing down though, and some moron has sped past and hit her. Why can't people be patient?
  5. My dogs are outside all day. I have four dogs - doubt anyone would be stupid enough to enter the yard to try and steal one! There are two large under-cover areas, good fences and lots of toys and bones. They sleep all day anyway though.
  6. So very very sad. RIP young lady. Thank you for trying to save the dog.

    Ellie

I am so sorry. RIP gorgeous Ellie.
  8. In the 'old days', if a dog bit someone it was often given a bullet! Don't kid yourself that dog bites were not taken as seriously 'back then'. If a dog is unstable enough to bite a child because it feels threatened, it should be PTS. If a human's first reaction to being startled or scared was to punch the offending person in the face, would we accept that?
  9. Or perhaps the dog's personality changed (as can happen as they mature) and they deemed it was not safe? What would you have said if they rehomed it to someone else, and it bit someone? What if people then started calling GSD's dangerous dogs and pushed for them to be banned? Sorry, but a dog with an unstable temperament of ANY BREED should not be rehomed. That's why greyhounds have a good reputation now, because one organisation went out of its way to ensure that only fantastic dogs were rehomed.
  10. Thank you all so much. At this stage, it seems like the parents of the child are pushing for the dog to be PTS. But I have forwarded on these suggestions in the hope they might change their mind.
  11. Poor puppy. I hope he is found. Our local RSPCA (Melbourne) has rehomed dogs that could easily be called pitbull type dogs. I think where possible, they like to overlook breed and rehome nice dogs.
  12. Where was the dog's owner in all of this? Why did he bring a dog like that to a crowded place and allow it to bite a child? People need to take some responsibility for their dogs! They cannot just be bought and disregarded. They must be trained, socialised, etc. I know for a FACT that my dog would not do that. I know it. And if I had any concerns at all, I would not take them somewhere like a shopping centre! Perhaps instead of banning puppies in pet shops, we should all be pushing for mandatory obedience classes or something along those lines. If you want to impulse buy a dog, fine, but now you put in the hard work to make sure it becomes an acceptable member of society. Of couse, I don't know where this dog came from but it obviously hasn't had the training or socialisation that it needed.
  13. Our family dog(Kelpie x Corgi) was PTS at 17 years old. She ate Pedigree dryfood and Pal tins her whole life. She was never sick, never had any problems. She went blind and deaf and had a bit of arthritis in her old age, but thats it. She was vacc'd every year without fail too.
  14. Can someone please recommend a really good behaviouralist trainer who is experienced in aggression in SA? I have been contacted by a lady whose 4yo Border Collie has just bitten a child. The child had to have stitches. The lady was in tears on the phone and sounds like she is willing to make the effort with this dog. I'm not sure what area of SA yet but any reccomendations are greatly appreciated.
  15. Most of my kittens go to their new homes a few days after being desexed. I like to watch for complications but generally if they are going to happen, they'll happen in the first 48 hours. After that, they are ready to go and the new owners get the stitches taken out at their local vet.
  16. Rats can die of shock, but even a good bite from a dog would be enough to crush it. Just because it looks intact, doesn't mean your dog didn't kill it.
  17. I have four cats and four dogs. I also have a foster dog and lots of foster cats and kittens. No dramas here but the cats and dogs never mix together unsupervised. Our cats are indoor only and I would not trust the dogs if a cat ran through their yard.
  18. You need to see a photo of Frankie!! He is what a pug *should* look like weight-wise.
  19. I have no idea. Its really annoying though. Poor Lynda brought her foster girls over today and she can attest to how determined he is!
  20. My new greyhound foster is a hornbag. He is only 5mths old and has just been desexed, but he is so randy! My dane girl is in season and he will NOT leave her alone. Its driving me batty! I haven't had a male puppy for 8 years - are they normally this randy at such a young age?
  21. Portia is an Oriental, and she is looking for a home!
