BAHAHA!! My OH said this exact thing about our dogs when he watched the video!! His exact words were 'they've got the jumping up on us down pat surely we can get them to spring off us and walah we have a trick instead of an annoying habit'. I like both your thinking :)

The Doll Used In The Dog Temperament Test ?
kiesha09 replied to Christina's topic in General Dog Discussion
My girl would love the doll but she really doesn't like children at all so I wouldn't rely on a test like that in isolation at all. Having said that I think when you look at the responses to ALL the tests you can get a pretty good overall picture of the dogs temperament. -
]Hi guys, Over the long weekend I finally got to babysit my little fur nephew Dex. He is a beautiful 14 week old Border Collie puppy from Harvellie Border Collies. Dex lives in the country with my younger brother and future sister in law but he came to stay with me in the city so we had to give him a little bit of city life socialisation complete with a visit to Cibo coffee for pats with many strangers, the park & street walking with lots of cars, bikes, trucks & people. He He's a gorgeous little guy but my gosh had I forgotten what baby puppies are like - endless energy and mischief. My lot were none too impressed that he didn't sleep all day and that he was quite happy to jump on top of them while they tried to nap. I'm pretty sure if he ever moved in they would pack their bags and move out  Here's some happy snaps from the day (sorry for the crappy phone quality & fingers crossed they don't turn out huge). You'll notice you don't really see my guys in any photos - they decided it was far to risky to get that close to the needle like puppy teeth  Coffee at Cibo with crazy aunty Dex's very first Puppy-cino Look.... when you're not paying attention I like to jump on the furniture And steal OH's hat And hide it in the bed so I can chew it later - he'll never find it here I can also sit quietly for 30 seconds and chew a bone - nar maybe make it 20 seconds And look how cute I am sitting all over your furniture I'm also really good at coming when called and looking super cute And now just when Mum and Dad come to pick me up I FINALLY fall asleep I must admit I did let him get away with much more naughty things than I would ever dream of with my own puppy. Looking back on these photos I think next visit I might need to put some rules in place

I have always been totally against them but just recently have bought 2 and started using them (maybe once or twice a week) because its dark when I get up and when I get home and I'd like them to have some freedom on one or two walks a week but won't let them offlead in the dark. I think there is a key issue with their use though - they simply do not replace voice control. If you're going to use one your dog should still come to you when called, stop when cued, wait when you tell it to and be able to walk at heel when asked to. I certinaly don't think they should be used with puppies until they have basic training and can respond to certain commands - or else your likely to end up in a tangled mess or leave someone with rope burn as the puppy runs off and some poor stranger gets caught up in the rope. I can also imagine a situation where a puppy or dog running onto the road and getting swiped by a car. To be honest I also think they promote pulling as they get used to that constant tension on their collar. So I would also recommend they are only used on a harness or something different to what you would usually use for loose lead walking. I have seen some people use them on choker chains before which just leaves me dumbfounded! In the right hands they are a tool that can be of some benefit for certain circumstances but I think they are by no means a tool for everyone.

I love looking at your photos too - that and you have the BEST names for your dogs  OH is also loves me showing him all the photos of your doggies as he would love a kelpie for our next dog (I'm not so sure I could handle the hair, but we'll see).

This is me too now. I don't have time to stand around and wait for the fussy one to eat her breakfast or dinner so she literally gets her bowl of food and if its not gone it 5 minutes she gets it for dinner instead.
-
I've been considering one of these but how have you all hooked it up to the hot/cold water? Do you use it inside or outside?
-
Yep I went through a stage of begging 'Kiesha c'mon pleeeaaassseeeee eat your dinner for me.... we'll go for a nice walk after if you do'. As soon as I mentioned the 'walk' word she would forget about her food and run straight to the front door. Sigh.
-
I can so relate to your frustrations - lately I have one dog that when I put her food down will often look at it, smell it, lick it, then jump on her bed and scratch at it, then lick the candle holder (on a shelf near the bowl), then look at it, smell it, walk up the hall way etc. until the other dog has finished its food. Then will go to the bowl and some times eat it and sometimes sniff and walk away. My mum looked after and started hand feeding her because she was worried she would get hungry (insert eye roll). So like you I just said you've got 5 minutes - if its not eaten it gets taken away. Its the same food everyday. So annoying!

And he rocks out the flanno as well - just like a real man. All he needs now is a stubbie and perhaps a pair of footy shorts

WOW TSD I got teary just looking at the pics  But WOW what a superstar Em is - she looks like an absolute natural in those pics. What a very clever girl I'm so proud of her so no doubt your just about bursting with pride. Well done EM!!

If The Mountain Won't Come To Muhammad....
kiesha09 replied to HazyWal's topic in General Dog Discussion
Oh that is adorable!!! He wants to lay in the sun in comfort  -
Seriously? How often do you do a brush? Can you tell I have non shedding dogs  Seriously though that wool is awesome!

Thanks ES! The only problem switching to panoramis is that it doesn't do tapeworm so I think the interceptor option would be better.

My boy has had a dermatitis rash for the last few weeks and the vet diagnosed it as environmental allergies. after ttreating it for a week he is still scratching and last night I gave him a really good going over and found a flea. So now I'm thinking it may have been a flea allergy dermatitis. Both my guys have monthly sentinel spectrum treatments. Interesting to note my girl doesn't have fleas and has not been scratching. So my initial reaction is to swap to using comfortis as I've had really great results in the past in conjunction with interceptor. This should get, rid of all the current adult fleas. But I have one month left of sentinel spectrum. Could I use the comfortis today and then the spectrum in 2 weeks when they are due and then swap to the comfortis/interceptor regime. This would kill both adult fleas and eggs/larvae over the next month. Or should I just continue with the sentinel and use capstar for the next few days. I'm just concerned the sentinel isn't working and am so confused!! There are way too many flea/worming options!!

Thanks for the link. I go by the same principles as with myself. Everything in moderation and junk food is a rare treat. I think schmackos come under the junk food treat category so they only get them every now and then. They probably aren't worse for them than the chicken nuggests and soft serve icecream they get on their birthdays (a once a year treat) and I'm sure they find way worse stuff at the park on occasion  .

Well good news... this morning there was no wondering dog
-
No flame suit required Wobbly. In a way this dog is just like that, although not as dog friendly. If he stayed off the road then I wouldn't have an issue. But he doesn't so I do. I don't want to see him killed because of careless owners.
-
Well I just rang the council and the inspector is going to go and have a chat to the owner. I just explained that I was worried the dog would get squished. They aren't going to mention neighbours at all. I just hope they listen to the inspector and keep him contained before he's squished.
-
I guess I need to put on my big girl pants and just report it to the council. Hopefully I can remain anonymous and the dog control officer will have a chat to them. I just find it hard because I don't trust these neighbours not to do something in retaliation.
-
Yes I see where you are coming from Stari. But I'm torn... its not that I think they don't care for his wellbeing exactly. They do have kids who play with him and I've seen them give him pigs ears and trotters etc. I'm not even sure if they realise how much he is wondering - I see him very early in the morning (6am) when they are asleep most of the time, sometimes around 8am on my way to work. I just want them to contain their dog not lose him all together. Given he is old maybe he has wondered all his life and they think he's fine doing it. I obviously don't agree as I'd never let me dogs do that but some people have wierd ways of thinking about their dogs. Maybe I'm just being too soft
-
The dog has no tags and I really don't think its even registered. He is old and would probably be more likely be put to sleep than rehomed. In my council area there is no pound but we are to take them to the rspca or awl.

We have a dog that lives on our street that continually wonders (its fence is a foot high so easily jumps over the top). Lately he is sitting at my front door in the mornings when I go to take my dogs for a walk. He then follows us for a bit before I tell him to get away. He also craps on peoples front lawns and in my front garden. He also wonders all over the road. If he sees us out on a walk he'll run straight across the road. So if there is a car coming he'd be hit very easily. But generally he's on the footpath. Yesterday morning I found him heading towards the main road so I took him back to his yard. The problem is the neighbours are not exactly the most savoury looking characters. In fact they are pretty feral!! So I don't really want to talk to them about it and I'm scared that if I report them to the council if they find out who it is then they will retaliate against my dogs. So what would you do in this situation? Would you report them? Edited to add: I'm worried about the dogs safety first and foremost. No doubt if the council were spoken to they would literally chain him up 24/7 with no walks

I'm always a bit heart in mouth watching my greyhounds especially Stan. Maddie is a lot quicker than him and in his relentless quest to beat her he does things like smacking headfirst into one of the support beams under the deck and almost knocking himself out. Cutting her off at the pass seemed a good idea at the time...he still has the scar from that one. Stan does these weird on the spot 360's which my neighbour calls "the demented donut" I'm sorry for laughing at Stan but He has got to be one of the funniest dogs I've ever read about on the internet. He sounds like such a lovable character.
