thanks persephone i understand what you are getting at and it's a good point i also appreciate that your dogs don't have to deal with this kind of interaction --- i'd go a long way to have some secure property just for them but from where i was at in my thinking, i was playing out what had happened; and so the first occurrence: that's once, and then it goes on to okay, that's twice and so that's it, last time --- so, i would think that, in bella's case, she'd have already corrected the pup before i'd have the chance to get myself in there to separate and distract them! jb: that's the other thing --- during that circumstance, bella's behaviour was just a wee bit stronger the 2nd time than the first so yes, consideration for your own dog's level of frustration is what drives you into action, given that the pup [in this case] was half bella's size... thanks

thank you all for your responses --- i am grateful to hear that her behaviour seemed appropriate for the circumstances as i said the owners of the pup were quite happy with bella's reaction [which gives me the impression that they've done some research into dog ownership] but as someone posted above, leaving bella to her own devices may indicate to her that she has to make her own decisions about these things and that would be a bad thing... being a first time dog owner [and now also with a 2nd dog] i have found DOL members to be invaluable with their wealth of experience and it seems that every day i learn something more --- today, reading your replies there were some other hints and remarks that i picked up in several posts and so to avoid having my dog feel she is alone and unprotected during those occasions, i now most certainly will step in and distract her and hopefully the offending [that may be a poor choice of word] dog and that too may benefit the other dog too... thank you all again

...in his owner’s trunk... some peeps should be neutured Buffalo police rescued a cat from a Cheektowaga man who apparently was planning to make a meal out of his pet because he thought it was ill-tempered, authorities said Monday. When Ferry-Fillmore District officers pulled over a car driven by Gary L. Korkuc on Sunday night during a traffic stop, they said they heard a cat crying from inside the trunk and investigated. What they found has left animal lovers at the SPCA Serving Erie County in shock. The cat, according to police, was in a cage “marinating” in a mixture of crushed red peppers, chili pepper, salt and oil. “It’s disgusting. It surprises me every day what people are capable of when it comes to violence, whether it is animals or people,” said Gina M. Browning, the SPCA’s director of public relations. “I’ve never heard of anything like this before.” Korkuc, 51, was arrested on one count of cruelty to animals by Officers Jerry Guilian and John Poisson, shortly after he was stopped on the 1100 block of Broadway at about 7:45 p. m. for allegedly passing a stop sign. Police took the 4-year-old cat to the SPCA on Ensminger Road in the Town of Tonawanda, where Korkuc had adopted it May 11. He told police the cat had been “mean” to him, authorities said. In condemning the treatment of the cat, whose name is Navarro, Browning read from an SPCA memo put together in part from information provided by the officers and shelter staff: “Do not under any circumstances adopt to this man ever again. He claims he did not want the cat because it was ‘possessive, greedy and wasteful.’ That the cat got pregnant after ‘spaying,’ even though it was a neutered male. This man is a danger to animals. . . . was soaking cat in marinade to ‘cook.’ ” Workers at the SPCA gave Navarro two baths Sunday night to clean the spices off and were letting him calm down before bathing him again, Browning said late Monday, adding that the cat is adjusting well. “We can learn lessons in resiliency. He is purring away and getting ready for his next checkup. He’s looking around like, ‘What am I doing here?’ He might be put [back] up for adoption,” Browning said. Praising Guilian and Poisson, she added, “Thank God that police heard him. Thank God those cops took the initiative. By all appearances that cat may have wound up dead.” Korkuc was also charged with passing a stop sign and failure to signal. After his arrest, he was later released on an appearance ticket. Navarro has black and white markings, weighs 12 pounds and is described as having a good disposition. Adoption hours today at the SPCA, 205 Ensminger, are 11 a.m. to 8 p.m.

k look, is that behaviour displaying the possibility of the onset of aggression!?!? there's been a few threads lately; dog parks, walking etc --- could her behaviour escalate!?? she's never, and i mean NEVER shown aggression but this episode concerns me because of the other stuff that i've read... i *feel* that yes, she was simply teaching the pup boundaries, but can that behaviour become something more sinister? srsly, we're really responsible dog owners, caring about their survival in our hands --- i would die if i did anything wrong by my flufflies

thanks jb

Vetmedin - Loss Of Appetite?
Skruffy n Flea replied to Jedi-77's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
i love reading your posts erny --- i learn a lot from you you always talk about your avatar girl :D --- i wish i'd known her... i am quite emotional tonight; please forgive the interruption -
hello my heart dog, bella, came from dubious beginnings and we've done a whole helluva lot to keep her basically trained, well behaved and certainly well socialised --- she really is a good dog, responds very well to all commands and also to some accidental training that has over time become obvious... bella turned 2 beginning of july... last weekend, as we usually do, we're at the small dog park [as opposed to a small park for dogs] and there was a 5-mo oodle [for want of a better term]. it was quite a nice lil dog and he started playing with bella, chasing her, which i know doesn't bother bella BUT bella took some kind of offence to this wee boy and she after several rounds rolled him over pinning him to the ground, using her 'gruff' play voice! i was more than a little startled but the owners of the pup didn't mind terribly and somewhere in my psyche i knew that bella was mostly behaving appropriately --- i remembered this puppy licence thing and i kept a close eye on bella as this pup continued to chase her! at some point shortly after and as part of the same circumstance, bella seemed to get jack of this pup; she didn't do anything that indicated a dangerous situation would ensue but the came together in one spot and she did this quick flicking of her open jaw, not connecting at all and most certainly not biting, to the side of this pup's head using a loud and quite a gruff vocal --- this was in open space so not up against anything... we, together with the owners were supervising and they said they were not concerned and happy that there was an older dog teaching it to behave --- i guess i felt concerned because this was certainly out of bella's character! at least i hadn't seen her act in such a way... i'm at loggerheads --- bella had no difficulty with any of the other dogs at the park that day and no other dog 'dogged' her in the same manner! i'd like to think that puppy was using his puppy licence and bella was effectively teaching him how to behave! i'm really not sure --- i became a first time dog owner in sept 08 so in your experience do you think bella was reacting to inappropriate puppy behaviour? i gratefully appreciate any input

How Often Do You Feed Sardines And Eggs?
Skruffy n Flea replied to Boxer05's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
from what i understand, once and at most, twice a week --- that may however depend on who ya talk to or the breed of dog you are feeding... personally, i would like a bible for the healthy and effective feeding of swfs just so i don't feel like i'm even close to failing them good luck -
Breeding 'allergic' Dogs
Skruffy n Flea replied to Remarkabull's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
i live with two mixed breeds and it's obvious to me from where they came my heart dog bella is bathed in luck --- i've not had one minute of concern with her health or behaviour... byron, my soul dog, is fraught with concerns, near the worst of which is his itchy *invisible condition* skin --- it pains me greatly to watch him battle to satisfy his itch and he follows a pattern like it is a rule book, written with him in mind... i have several preparations on hand, be it at 9pm or 3 am, to help him manage his routine... if i could put my hands around his breeder's neck, i would first rub their nose in his excrement --- allergy, in my view, is the most sustainable cruelty... *breaking * -
ooohhhh, i'd hate to hear that from my vet... a month or so ago, i'd taken my lil foster kitty in for desexing and about 3 hours later, i'm at the chemist, my phone rings and it's coming from the vet [they're in my phone book]!!! of course, my mind is racing --- it's like 3 hours or so since i dropped bob off and i'm not expecting to hear from them AT ALL unless there's an issue *holy crap* so i answer: hello!??! vet: oh hi, it's *name* from the *vet* me: hi, is something wrong *near panic, heart reaching my throat* vet: well, no me: *gulp* vet: it's okay but we're about to start bob's surgery and well, um, bob's a girl! me: *dead air* vet: you there? ... anyhoo, i understand...

Vetmedin - Loss Of Appetite?
Skruffy n Flea replied to Jedi-77's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
hey jedi, so sorry to hear such awful news but things seem to look bright for his future on that medication --- i did a google and found this site and the following blurb was at the bottom: Important safety information: VETMEDIN should not be given in case of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, aortic stenosis, or any other clinical condition where an augmentation of cardiac output is inappropriate for functional or anatomical reasons. The safety of VETMEDIN has not been established in dogs with asymptomatic heart disease or in heart failure caused by other etiologies other than atrioventricular valvular insufficiency or dilated cardiomyopathy. Use only in dogs with clinical evidence of heart failure. The most common side effects reported in field studies were poor appetite, lethargy, diarrhea, dyspnea, azotemia, weakness, and ataxia. If side effects should occur, pet owners should contact their veterinarian. Please refer to the Full Prescribing Information here. good luck to you and your boy -
woolies [the larger stores] prepackage turkey necks [4 to a pack] but i can't remember what i paid for 'em --- it certainly wasn't that expensive tho yeah I have got them from there for about $4.50 or so for a pack. At the moment I can get 15kg of turkey necks for about $33 so I just can't justify paying so much more. jayzuz!!! $2.20 per kg!!! man, i soooo wish i had the freezer space!!!

Very Sick Pup, How To Get It To Eat
Skruffy n Flea replied to SAAM's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
saam, i got the di-vetelact from petbarn [$20 i think it cost for a largish type tin]... as for the bbq chicken!??! big ole YUP on that score too --- there aint nuthin within sniffing distance that's gunna turn its nose up at that! -
a box of 12 [229 gms each x 12 = 2.748 kg] BARF patties costs me [at petbarn] $20.99 --- that's $1.75 per pattie and therefore about $7.64 per kg! given that all the essentials are already mixed in, i reckon that's a pretty fair deal. eta: i have 2 swfs and one box would likely last me about a month --- a box of cat turkey BARF costs about $11 and that too lasts me about a month i do of course supplement their meals; they eat BARF only at night

Very Sick Pup, How To Get It To Eat
Skruffy n Flea replied to SAAM's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
i really don't know about puppies but i had a 4-week old pound kitty that was pretty sick when she was busted out... i didn't ask for any recommendations, did my own research and came across di-vetelact, got some and during the worst of it, i sat up with her one entire night and every 10 /15 mins or so i tempted her with a small amount of it along with morsels of cat turkey barf --- she didn't take much each time but she survived and the next day she was 10 times better, out on the back patio enjoying some late summer sun she was on ABs during that time and for the next 6 or so weeks but i credit that night to her ultimate survival --- i put that down largely to the di-vetelact... good luck good luck good luck and major props to you for going the extra mile for your lil girl -
Human Antihistamines For Dogs
Skruffy n Flea replied to dee lee's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
i give my two a half Claratyne tab daily to take care of their itchies (mostly byron), which it does --- unfortunately, it doesn't do much for byron's sneezing or his watery eyes their vet recommended tho that i try several on the list they provided me until i find the one that works best; Claratyne does the job for the itchies and that was byron's biggest concern so i'm glad for that -
red lea chickens at westfield parramatta does minced breast at $11.99 per kg --- i know, it's a bit far for you to travel... i asked if they could mince up my order of chicken livers, chicken hearts and chicken giblets and they couldn't so i'm considering getting me a mincer; that might be the way to go for you too, get skinless c/breast [much cheaper] and mince it yourself, maybe...

i had a timmy or several when i was a kid growing up on the farm --- but i always called 'em lamsy
