Speaking only for myself, if I were looking for a lab as a pet, I'd search out a young one who's already showed some behaviour formation. With that in mind, I checked the breeders' pages... & I'd be looking into a 7 month old little bloke who's said to be 'biddable' and had 'obedience training'. As well as a girl, born in 2013, called Caddie: http://www.dogzonline.com.au/breeds/mature/labrador-retriever.asp

Loved your post! :)

A Newfoundland that would act as a barge so I could paddle to the nearest, bigger island that was inhabited. :)

The article in North-West News Brisbane Nov 5, 2014. 'Mates Remembered'. Louie the Labrador might have a couple of extra legs and a little more hair than most other soldiers, but his work has been just as crucial both at home and overseas. Louie is one of more than two dozen bomb dogs at Gallipoli Barracks (Enoggera, Brisbane). His best mate, Sapper Jonathan Waite said that on Remembrance Day this year the public could show their support for service animals by buying a special purple poppy ... "From the last conflict we had, bomb detection dogs have saved dozen of lives... I was a high risk searcher in Afghanistan & having them in front of you when you were searching was just that added security. I see Louie as any other soldier around the base because he's doing just as much work as everyone else.' The dogs could recognise about 25,000 different combinations of explosives. But despite the long hours, life was one big game for Louie, who was rewarded with a ball and a cuddle for his hard work with his best mate. Here's the Australian War Animal Memorial Organisation's Facebook page where they mention the Purple Poppies also being available from Talkingstones: https://www.facebook.com/AustralianWarAnimalMemorialOrganisation And here's Greencross Vets describing their partnering with that Organisation to make them available: http://www.greencrossvet.com.au/News/?id=205

I saw an article in our local paper this morning... our area takes in the Gallipoli Army Base in Brisbane. A soldier with his military dog said that Purple Poppies are available to honour the animals that have served the military & they can be worn alongside the Red Poppy that honours the soldiers on Remembrance Day (which is fast approaching). He said that Purple Poppies can be bought from the Greencross Vet at Chermside in Brisbane. I phoned the national Greencross Vets & they said the Purple Poppies are available from all Greencross Vets in all States, but in limited number. I checked the Facebook page of the organisation which is producing them ... Australian War Animal Memorial Organisation. It said that a company Talking Stones has them available online. Details here: http://talkingstones.com.au/shop/purple-poppy.html Such a lovely idea & worth supporting. General info here: http://awamo.org.au/purple-poppy/

Good news! Heard back from RSPCA Toowoomba who said thanks for the heads-up about the ad. I told them that an eagle-eyed person had spotted it & was concerned, They contacted the owner & Toby/Dragan is now safely back at the shelter. And he'll be placed in a more suitable home. Seems, apart from not being puss-friendly, he's a sweet natured dog with people (well he's tibbie X cav!). He owes you a kiss, WH. :)

I get on my soapbox a bit about this issue :) I have seen this happen to sometimes elderly people who don't have the capability or knowledge to pursue and defend their rights and are bullied into parting with a beloved pet - its heartbreaking for them It's a different matter when the body corporate rules exist already... & a person is aware of any restrictions about pets before moving in. But the huge problem is when the body corporate decision allows someone to move in with a pet.... but then the rule is changed afterwards. This is what happened in the Brisbane case. The young woman was given the OK to move in with 2 dogs. There were no complaints relating to the behaviour of the dogs or her management of them. But the body corporate changed to saying only 1 dog was allowed.... citing council by-laws that don't even exist. I've notice that in some of the new unit developments, they have a blanket 'pet friendly' or 'no pets' written into a permanent basic charter for residency. That means those wanting to avoid living with pets around can be assured & those wanting to live with pets are also. It's the chopping & changing that's caused problems.

Agree, Rosetta. Trying to get that message to Toby's present owner. I was hoping that if she spoke to the RSPCA Behaviour Hotline, that would've been their advice. I've found them to be good people, at that unit, who have a dog's best interests in mind. Have spoken to RSPCA Toowoomba & they have a copy of the ad.

Yes, Toby was called Dragan at RSPCA Toowoomba... & he was mentioned on another Rescue topic. And he is a Tibbie X Cav from a group that was surrendered by a 'breeder' up that way. http://www.dolforums.com.au/topic/259573-isabella/page__st__15 RSPCA Toowoomba now aware of the ad.

Double post.

There were a bunch of Tibbie X Cavs at the RSPCA Toowoomba a few weeks ago. One of them was mentioned in the Isabella rescue thread. I think this boy, Toby, might have been one. Is there an email address with that advertisement? The RSPCA in Qld have an excellent Behaviour Hotline staffed by qualified behaviourists. My opinion is that they'd give this present owner good advice, rather than just passing him. I've got the phone no. MM, that lady used to do Tibbie Rescue but I honestly don't know if she still does.

I totally agree with you, Rosetta.

I think Be Bop has decided he's his Dad's boy! That is great how you're training the children so well how to interact with a puppy. He's a lucky boy to be with a family who love him so much & who are so doggie-wise.
-
That was exactly my thought, too. That dear little boy is not only gorgeous... but he was so clever & mature in how he responded to his lesson. I loved the general chorus of 'Good boy!'. :) Pics and updates will be very welcome!

BJ, I love how Jester will only enter the vet's if you move his legs for him. :) But I'm impressed that once inside he complies even tho' it's reluctant. Shelley figured she could wreck the system if she kept shaking ...!
-
Yes, I read that in the Courier-Mail this morning. Top marks to the person who heard the appeal against the body corporate's change of mind about owning 2 dogs. Also full marks to the young woman who owns the lovely pair of kelpie crosses. There was strong evidence presented how well she cares for & manages her dogs. The fact that she's a loving & thoroughly responsible dog owner has paid off!

On the positive side, I got an email from a friend who's owned a p/b pet Amstaff for years & was thinking of getting another. I'd sent her the Mature Dogs for adoption on the Breeders' pages. She'd looked up the application form which one breeder asked interested people to fill in. She was full of admiration at its thoroughness in checking out prospective owners.... sent me a copy! BTW her Amstaff, who's now 10 years old, has been one of the finest, most sensible, and loyal dogs I know.

Our sheltie, Shelley, was a drama queen .... but she went full on at the vet's. At the UQ clinic, the vets used to wear white coats. First sight of a white coat & Shelley went into reverse. She wouldn't walk to the examination room...she'd toboggan down on her bottom, pulled along by her lead, because the corridor was a smooth concrete slope. On the exam table, she'd shake so hard that the big heavy metal table would shake, too. The vet used to assign students the job of checking her vitals... like taking temperature. That'd take 4 students... on the floor, not the shaking table. As soon as she stepped outside the clinic, Shelley, would switch back to her high-stepping, happy self. No permanent damage. I honestly think she enjoyed the drama... & the attention.
-
I was also going to say a kelpie or a border collie.
-
I'm so relieved for you & your chi, mel. You were right to go searching for a vet who has special expertise ... as well as, of course complying with the regulations. Best recommendations are word of mouth based on experience.

Do You Love One Breed But Not Love A Similar Breed?
mita replied to Simply Grand's topic in General Dog Discussion
Yes, I am a Saluki nut but life would be weird without an Afghan in the house. They are dudes, even if they are the second best dog in the world ;-) I'm the other way around! When I was shown pics of the Salukis at the Saluki Centre in Abu Dhabi, I fell for them big time ... the pups are gorgeous! But Afghans don't grab me the same way. I just love the Saluki's elegant functional lines... & the eyes and the head with that little bit of pretty fringing. I could easily become a Saluki nut .... if the lifestyle matched. :) http://visitabudhabi.ae/en/what.to.see/culture.and.heritage/saluki.centre.aspx -
What a sweet little face... he's really saying, 'Please help me!'. Little Legs Rescue are very good people.... here's hoping someone puts their hand up for Peppe. They have a Facebook page.
