  1. There's a natural historian & a dog behaviorist who argue that dogs laugh. They claim there's evidence MRI scanning shows that the same areas of the brain light up in laughing humans as in dogs that are happy. http://premiumblend.net/2009/05/29/dogs-have-ethics-a-nuanced-moral-system-say-natural-historian-jake-page-and-animal-behavorist-marc-bekoff/ I agree about the great joy of teasing that dogs have. Lily next door's best friend is our cat. They have great chasey games. Sometimes the puss hides herself behind a door, in the hallway Then she leaps out at Lily. Instead of looking frightened.. Lily's face lights up. Makes her so happy that her cat mate carries on like an insane spider monkey. The equivalent of a human falling about laughing.
  2. I was trying to think of a term for Billy's annual double celebration, from now on. That's perfect. :)
  3. Surely that pointed to the owner's failure to raise, socialize, manage, and contain his dog/s. That's what the authorities should be going after, not after a breed label. A straying Rottie was spotted outside our library. When people were asked to come help secure him... not too many takers. Except 4 women (including me). He could've been a problem dog. But, when called....'Come here sweetheart!' His face lit up .... response was that of a well-socialised pet, to whom people were 'friends'. He was huge,in lovely condition, with a fancy collar. Library staff took him into their office, using a piece of string for a lead. Owners were easily traced (tradesmen had let him out). He was lucky that his finders 'tested' him on his behaviour, not on a breed stereotype.
  4. That's like what the vet told us about our elderly Sheltie.... who had the same problem. She was bigger than standard, about the size of a teenage Rough Collie. The vet said it was from age-related muscle wastage. I remember wondering if swimming could help keep the muscles going a bit better. So I can understand people recommending Bowen Therapy. I wish I'd known about it then.
  5. Good advice. We had an elderly Sheltie who was greatly helped by a course of Cartrophen injections. But she was also given a medication for pain relief. Wish I could remember the name.... started with M. Interestingly, the same M-whatever pain relief med was prescribed by the vet for our young female Tibbie after her desexing. ADDED: Was it Metacam?
  6. Also check SOS Facebook. They ask for people who have offers of crates and accommodation to post them. Good to see a long list of offers already. https://www.facebook.com/sos.saveourstrays
  7. [quote name='Plan B' timestamp='1378782474' post='6295456' Trouble is, what's stopping them from having a guess this dog is a Pom x Jack Russell (or something equally bizarre)? I wouldn't necessarily guess Tibetan Spaniel. Agree, As I said , I'm often nor sure if a dog is a Tibetan Spaniel & have to ask eagle-eyed breeders. Have a look at this line-up of purebred, show-quality Tibetan Spaniels, & the variation. Add to that the fact Tibbies turning up in Pounds may be pet-quality or not strictly to standard. So different people could guess differently. (click)
  8. Wouldn't argue with that! There's been quite a few instances that I personally know of, where an owner just phoning the Pound & asking using a breed label, finished up in tears.... or nearly in tears. But, given the Renbury Pound staff's excellent reputation, I'm sure they would handle owner phone enquiries intelligently. My initial concern was based on my not knowing Renbury's new policy. And thinking that other dogs were still being labelled by breed. So this little guy would be out on a limb. Thanks to Gertrude giving information, I know that's not so. AND.... thanks to Powerlegs' update, the little guy even has rescue lined up, if not claimed. Shall let Tibbie folk know.
  9. Plan B, my ears.... long way away in Brisbane... pricked up at the name.
  10. Yes, I've only ever heard exceptionally good things about the staff at Renbury.
  11. Thanks for that info, Gertrude. I hope the Pound staff explain that to any owner who's phoning asking if a certain breed has come in. And then requiring a specific description. Trouble is, description like tan & white small dog, might fit a number of dogs. Of course, best thing is for owner to go look. I understand Renbury's position... they're trying to get dogs 'judged' for adoption by their actual behaviour & not by breed stereotype. They're right, that so many dogs have been misjudged. I hope if this little fellow goes to rescue, tho', that then the label Tibetan Spaniel can be put on him. Because there are breed traits & connections.
  12. Sure is, DD. And not just for Tibbies. There's other less common breeds that risk getting the wrong label. I wouldn't blame Pound staff. Many times I've had to run a pic past the eagle-eyed registered breeders, because I'm not sure. And microchipping by owners would prevent it. PS Thanks to Powerlegs for spotting this lad.
  13. Slghtly O/T. But it was good to see on Brisbane TV News, police doing something decent for a little StaffyX. Owner among teenage boys who crashed a car, while hooning. Ran off, but the lad carried his dog with him. Police officers found him & the dog in bushland. Handcuffed the lad to take him for questioning. But one officer looked after the dog, cradling him in his arms so it wouldn't be distressed. The little dog looked as happy as can be. :) Last comment in the news item was that 'the police will look after the dog.' Meaning that they'd keep it safe, until the lad was released from questioning... or some family member came to get it.
  14. There's a little tan & white dog recently come into Renbury 9/9/13. No 903. He's described as a small mixed breed. But he looks like a Tibetan Spaniel. Face like my p/b girl & has the typical hare-feet. An owner could be phoning the pound & asking if a Tibbie has come in. If so, there'd be no match. If there's anyone rescuing at Renbury, could you mention this to the staff? If unclaimed, he could be a nice little dog for rescue.
  15. It was Esky who first told me about Mop & Duster. :) Yes, 4Paws is fantastic .... great band of people ... with a love of seniors, too. Lot of retired people live in that Sunshine Coast area, so some come in, when elderly people go into care. Just found out the other day, the great lady who runs 4Paws, owns a Tibbie herself.... a senior. :)
  16. My goodness she looks beautiful now. With even more of the love & care she's getting, she'll be a knockout. Dogs are wonderful creatures. After all the neglect by her humans, she still has a sweet temperament. Looks it, too. Bless all who helped.

  18. I broke my rule of not looking at rescue organisations' website . What a stunning lot of dogs this organisation has. You're not wrong, DD. And an excellent rescue, in every way. They've been consistently like that ... no flash in the pan. Highly recommend it to anyone looking for a small to medium dog (tho' they do have bigger ones sometimes, too). Also to anyone who'd like to foster for them.
  19. Sneaking in a plug for a p/b Tibbie boy, named Tibby, who's for adoption from 4Paws Animal Rescue at Nambour, Qld (just north of Brisbane). His foster-carer describes him as a real honey-bear type Tibbie, same as Billy. She says she'll miss him when he goes (sound familiar?). Full description, pic, application details here (don't know if they do interstate): http://www.4pawsanimalrescue.org.au/dogs.html
  20. Brisbane's Sunday Mail newspaper this morning has bunch of pics from around voting locations. One shows a cute little white dog, on a leash, sitting behind its owner's feet, as she fills in her ballot paper.
  21. I wouldn't either. Even if there's a 'designated' dog parking area.... & even if there's someone posted to keep an eye on the dogs there. Too many risks for my dog from being out of my immediate supervision out in public. Being stolen, another dog attacking, some stupid member of the public hurting or teasing. The list goes on. If my dogs can't be in my immediate care.... all the time.... when out in public places, then they don't go.
  22. My god, he's so beautiful! What a knockout. And doesn't he know how to pose. :) RP said from the first time she got him in foster-care, that he had a gorgeous nature. You're going to win piles of new friends whenever you take him out. Valbitz, the stubborn bit is so like a Tibbie. They approach everything with the questions, 'The point of this is... what?' and 'What's in it for me?'. If you can give a Tibbie a convincing answer for both.... it'll be in like a shot, & never forget.' So different from the working breeds we used to have, who said, 'Your wish is my command!'.
  23. There's a photo on Malcolm Turnbull's Facebook page (he's a dog tragic) of the 'official' Puppy Parking Zone outside the Bondi Beach Public School markets. Click to enlarge: Bit like that at the school where we voted today. Quite a few people had dogs, but they all either left the dog outside with a 'minder', or they tied the dog up in a place away from the flow of the people.
