Photos Of Cavs At Melb Royal 22/09/2010
cavNrott replied to Bilbo Baggins's topic in General Dog Discussion
Oh I am so sorry BB. What a terrible thing to happen -
Judging from recent posts on here about Petfood24/7 I wouldn't deal with them. People stated they've paid for orders that haven't been delivered and they're unable to contact the company by phone. Emails to them re the whereabouts of their order are not acknowledged.

Women Injured And Animals Killed In Overnight Fires (caboolture Qld)
cavNrott replied to Boronia's topic in In The News
Yep, I think you're incredible too and so courageous. -
Thanks again for your kind thoughts. I think some of you would remember when Faith first came to me from NSW. Considering her age I was blessed to have her for 4+ years. It's never long enough. I knew when Faith had surgery last December that she had a malignancy and our time together was limited. Knowing didn't prepare me for the loss of her. She was a darling girl, so calm, placid and gentle. I was very lucky to have those 4+ years with her.

Thanks Dyz. Faith's ashes were returned to me yesterday and having her back home, albeit in a different form, is comforting. Think I'm going senile in my dotage. Faith's favourite place in the house was the couch in the family room. I felt I needed to put the quite beautiful box containing her ashes on her couch because it was her special place and I wanted her to know she was home. I've come to my senses a bit this morning and she how holds pride of place on a little table in my bedroom. Thanks for thinking of me.

How Much Protein For Large Breed Puppy?
cavNrott replied to chloeshepherd's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
Sorry to disagree but none of those are premium quality foods. I wouldn't feed any one of those brands of food to my dogs. Too many grains and fillers. Hills and Eukanuba are premium brands (supercoat isn't I realised after I posted) Have you read the ingredient list on Hills and Euk? IMO they're no better in quality than the supermarket brands. -

One of my Cavaliers reverse sneezes. Stroking his throat, blowing into his nose or putting my hand on his nose doesn't stop it and he looks quite distressed when it's happening. I now put my finger in his mouth and depress the back of his tongue, that stops it immediately. This boy has pneumonia at the moment. He's been under specialist care for 6 weeks and is just about right now. Another xray next week will hopefully show clear lungs. Strangely, since he's been on antibiotics for pneumonia he hasn't reversed sneezed even once. I can't help but wonder how he came to have fluid in his lungs. Was it from the reverse sneezing? Is it possible that he aspirated some fluid while reverse sneezing?

Thank you all very much for your kind thoughts on my loss of Faith. She was a treasure. She's very sadly missed. Anne

My darling girl Faith was gently pts yesterday. Her cancer had returned. I will miss you so much baby girl. I loved you the minute I saw you and I'll love you forever.

TKS do a search for 'grooming comb with rotating teeth'. That should bring it up for you. I think the BARF shop sells them too. I have a couple of these combs I use on the Cavaliers. If you have any problems my local pet supply place sells them so I could get one and send it to you.

Housemates Large Dog Growls At Me- Advise Needed !
cavNrott replied to bl0nd3y's topic in General Dog Discussion
I doubt this dog is a man eating monster. I suspect it's more about lack of confidence and dog handling skills of the OP. These things we learn with training and experience. We don't need to be big strong people to show good leadership and have well trained, obedient dogs. Many dogs will sense a lack of confidence and behave accordingly. I doubt this would be a free dog sitting arrangement. I would imagine the OP would have agreed to a low rental for minding the dog. I doubt she'd be foolish enough to pay full rent and look after the home owners dog for nothing. -
Housemates Large Dog Growls At Me- Advise Needed !
cavNrott replied to bl0nd3y's topic in General Dog Discussion
I agree with Diva. Surely the owner of this dog didn't just put it inside the gate and drive off. There must have been an introduction between the dog and it's new carers (the OP and her partner). As the house belongs to the owner of the dog, arrangements must have been made between him and the OP. Surely the owner would not be so negligent as to leave a dangerous dog with strangers without proper introduction, some instructions and information about the dog. Was the owner not living there with the dog for a few days before leaving for a month? He must have felt comfortable leaving his dog in your care. I don't think the dog has done anything to indicate the need for a behaviourist. The problem as I see it is that that Blondy is not confident around the dog and hasn't much dog knowledge. She thinks because she is a small person the dog will target her. Not so! I'm shorter than Blondy and of slight build. I've owned Rottweilers and taken in rescue Rotts for many years and have never felt my small stature made me look like dinner or prey to the dogs. Neither have the dogs because they've not challenged me. I've made it my business to learn to read dogs body language because they surely can read mine. It seems the OP also is not taking her 6 month old Rottweiler to obedience classes so doesn't really have an understanding of dog training. Taking a food bowl away from a dog achieves nothing apart from teaching it to resource guard. A dog needs to trust its owner/carer to treat it honestly and fairly and taking it's dinner away is not fair. I also think the dominance theory is a crock. Dogs need confident leadership rather than dominance from their owner. We need our dogs to cooperate willingly. I don't dominate my dogs but I have their respect and they obey my commands without hesitation. The dog's owner must have felt confident enough to leave his dog with the OP. Surely he would know the dog would sense if the OP was fearful and afraid of it. What about your partner Blondy? Is he afraid of the dog? I think it would probably be best if you have a discussion with the owner of the house and dog and if no suitable arrangement can be made then you find another place to live. BTW there is a Rotty owners sub forum in general discussion. We love to have new Rotty owners join us. efs -
I have 2 Cavaliers, they sleep on my bed. They'd be heart broken if I put them in the garage. These little dogs are always wherever I am. They're definitely people dogs, not outside dogs. The breeders condition on allowing me to have their pups was that they would be house dogs. I wouldn't have it any other way. Their crates are in my family room with doors always open. They eat in their crates because my Rottweilers are inside dogs and I didn't want them getting any ideas of stealing the Cavs food...not that they've ever tried it on. When I'm preparing their food the Cavs run into the crates and sit patiently awaiting their dinner. They're not barkers, they're quiet dogs who bark only to alert me me if someone is in my driveway. A sshhhh from me stops the barking immediately. Well trained dogs don't need to be threatened with a rolled up newspaper, they're obedient because they want to please you. Why do you use a rolled up newspaper? It is to hit yourself on the head when your dogs are barking to remind you to teach them the 'quiet' command?

It matters not whether you approve of what other people do with their dogs in their own home because really, it's none of your business. I doubt anyone is seeking your approval before allowing their dogs to sleep on the bed. I have 3 dogs. My small deaf dog always sleeps on my bed. My elderly large breed dog never does because she couldn't get up there anyway and the other little one sometimes does. As long as people love their dogs and take good care of them is all that's important.

Need A Good Vet In Camberwell Area, Melbourne
cavNrott replied to Stolzseinrotts's topic in General Dog Discussion
I was going to Watersons vet for a long time until a couple of things happened that I felt were not in the best interests of my animals. So I decided to look for a new vet which is how I found the vet at Blackburn Vet Centre. -

Need A Good Vet In Camberwell Area, Melbourne
cavNrott replied to Stolzseinrotts's topic in General Dog Discussion
If he's prepared to drive for a few minutes further out a really good vet for our Rotties is Blackburn Veterinary Centre. It's on the corner of Middleborough and Blackburn Roads. The adress is 296 Middleborough Rd and the phone number is 9897 4222. When I was living in Camberwell I went to this vet and I still do. It's about a 10-15 drive from Camberwell. I've been going there for about 16 years. The vet I see is Andrew, he's the senior vet there. He's great with Rotties. Another vet there who's also good with my Rotts is Matthew. I can recommend either of these vets. They're fairly pricey as vets go but worth it. -
I agree with you Daisygirl. A few years ago I had my Rottweiler insured with AFS PetMed. I had her insured with them for 4 years and when the policy was due for renewal I cancelled it because I was sick of doing battle with them. My girl had an arthroscopy which turned out to be unecessary surgery, thanks to both the vet and the specialist misdiagnosing the problem. AFS PedMed refused to reimburse the cost of the surgery because the vet in his referral said it was a possible FCP which was one of their exclusions. It was not FCP but they refused to pay out because FCP was mentioned in the vets documentation. Each year they added more exclusions and covered less illnesses but the premium kept increasing. Eventually it got to where she wouldn't be covered for any problems common to the breed. I had accident and illness cover but as they kept adding exclusions she would really only have been covered for an accident but I was still paying for accident and illness cover. Unfortunately it's a condition of most insurance policies that if your dog dies within the policy period you still have to pay the premium for the full year. I'm sorry you lost her Daisygirl.

Here, here! Me too. I love the looks of the early GSD's. Nice straight backs and strong, healthy looking dogs. How things have changed.

Where do they pick these bugs up from? My Cav has pneumonia and he's never around other dogs. He's always inside a warm house apart from a short walk 2 or 3 times a week. He's recoving from a laminectomy so only short walks if it's not freezing outside He's been on antibotics for a month and was xrayed again yesterday. He's improving but not clear so a/biotics for another month. How the hell did he get pneumonia? I hope Ollie recovers quickly and without any problems, the poor boy. Give him a gentle hug from me.

I hope it's nothing serious with the boy. Please keep us posted Jodie.

Thinking of you always and keeping candles alight. Great to hear your doing well and the dogs are being cared for so well. -
In the last 9 months the vet costs have been pricey. In comparison to just over 2 years ago when my Sophie Rottweiler had cancer and saw an oncologist every couple of weeks this last year hasn't been too bad. Sophie wasn't insured so the cost of her treatment was on me and her meds were sooo expensive. I hope we don't have a repeat performance of exy vets costs for the next couple of years, it'll send me broke. The insurance company has reimbursed me about $9000 in the last 8 months for my Cav boy. I bet they're sorry they took him on but at least my Cav girl has never had a claim. Faith Rottweiler is a rescue and has cancer so her costs are ongoing. She's about 13-14yo so her time is limited. I couldn't insure her, she was too old when she came to me. The only fees for this lovely girl will be consults and pain meds. Further surgery can't help her. I keep a credit card just for vet costs so the $$ is always available. I also go straight to the vet if I think things are not right with one of the dogs. If they're not acting normally something's wrong and the sooner we figure it out, the better. When Bronson ruptured his disk it was early in the morning. I put him straight into the car and went to the vet in my pyjamas and a light jacket....very classy
