I made a claim 13 months ago when one of my dogs had laminectomy surgery. When the policy was due for renewal not only did the premium increase by $10 per month but there is an additional clause that states they will cover only 40% of any future claim for any spinal issues. My excess is $250 for each claim.

It's now 2yrs+4 months since I lost Sophie. I still miss her every day and not an hour goes by that I don't think of her. She was my soul mate. Sometimes tears well up but time teaches us how to deal with grief. As Rozzie said, I will never stop missing her. I have a memory box containing Sophie's things and letters of condolence from her vet and oncologist. Her rosewood box sits on a small table in my bedroom. I still keep fresh flowers on her table to honour her memory. Today she has red rosebuds and one Gardenia in front of her picture. She always had her head buried in the gardenia plants when they were in flower. I'm so sorry you are going through the deep pain of grief. Jordan was a lucky boy to be so loved by you.

I'm so sorry Pers. What a sad week you've had. Rest In Peace Molly.

Mother Moocher. Unless you are sharing your life with the dog in question you are in no position to judge or accuse anyone of thinking only of themselves. How could you know when you're not involved in any way? I'm sure the sharp sting in that comment hurt a few of us. Some comments are best left unspoken. When you have very close and loving bond with your dog you do know when the time is right. They make it clear, there is no doubt. If you are lucky enough to form that special bond with a dog, communication exists. If you've never experienced that special soul mate relationship with a dog I guess you wouldn't know. Puppy Sniffer. You will know if the time is right. Don't doubt your dog, she'll tell you. You will see it in her eyes, she will ask for your help. Don't worry about anything else. Just do what you know is right for your dog. EFS.

I Almost Killed My Dog By Giving Him Fish Oil Tablets :(
cavNrott replied to Megan2010's topic in General Dog Discussion
Fish oil capsules are normally ok for dogs. I give both large and small breed Wild Salmon oil and have been giving them these for many years. I also give them natural vitamin E capsules. I alternate with Salmon oil one night and Vit E the next. They also have COQ10 capsules every night. I still give my Pancreatitis girl these oil capsules and she has no problems with them. After having my Cavalier girl on Hills i/d food, both canned and dry for the last few weeks since her Pancreatitis attack I decided I would slowly re-introduce BARF to her diet. Yesterday I bought a carton of Billinghurst BARF in the kangaroo variety because it has only a 3% fat content. Tried this out last night with one heaped teaspoon added to her meal. It was a disaster! She was uncomfortable all night and is just now starting to feel ok. I added in some Enzyplex too but it didn't help. It looks as though she has chronic Pancreatitis. I was hoping it was only one acute episode. It looks like she'll have to stay on the Hills i/d food. ARGhhh! I've found kangaroo meat doesn't agree with some dogs. I tried it with my elderly Rotty girl and she developed instestinal problems the next day that took me weeks to get rid of. It was human grade roo from the butcher. I'm reluctant to try my other Cavalier on the Roo BARF just in case it's too rich for him. He's having Rabbit BARF but usually has lamb. The Lamb seems to be always out of stock. No probs with the rabbit. If anyone feeds their dog BARF Kangaroo you are welcome to the carton I bought yesterday. Don't want any money for it but since it's frozen/fresh food it will need to be picked up from Mt. Waverley, Vic. If anyone wants it shoot me a pm. Same with the Paw Paw and mint supplement for Pancreatitis. I have a full bottle, minus 1 tablet and if someone with a Pancreatitis dog can use the tablets you are welcome to them. Pick up also please. I can't get to a post office until after Christmas. -

Where do you buy it from? Dora is starting to suffer more from her arthritis lately and I'd like to do whatever I can for her. I buy it on line usually from Pulse pharmacy. I don't think all pharmacies stock Wagner products but many do. Make sure you get the one that is MSM Joint Powder because there is another one called Joint Powder and I don't think it works as well. I bought the ordinary Joint Powder by accident once but I think they do better with the MSM ingredient. -

Before cooking pet mince please check with your butcher that he doesn't use ground up chicken frames or any other bone in the pet mince. Cooked bone is dangerous for dogs even in small pieces. It's sharp and brittle. All the pet mince I've come across contains ground up bone. I don't feed pet mince. I either make up a BARF mix myself using human grade meat or buy the Billinhurst BARF available frozen from the large pet stores. It seems the Lamb and the Kangaroo has the lowest fat content of all the Billinghurst varieties. The Roo is only 3% fat. The lamb is 11%. Rabbit is 14%. Yesterday I put one teaspoon of Kangaroo BARF in with her meal and she tolerated it with no issues. She's been on a prescription diet since the Pancreatitis attack. What percentage is the fat content of Woofbix and does it contain grains? As we've learned, fat is the enemy of a pancreatitis dog. I rarely feed dry food and my last purchase was Canidae Salmon and ?? (whatever the other fish is). It doesn't contain grains and I prefer grain free if I need to feed any dry food. High quality and low fat is the way to go with dry food as well as with fresh/raw food. I now have the NZ Colostrum powder as well as Enzyplex and my dog it having these supplements every day. One Pancreatitis attack was more than enough so hopefully all will be well now and we won't have a repeat performance. I bought a PawPaw and Mint supplement as well as Bromelain (Pineapple) supplement from the health store. Just want to be well prepared if we every have another episode. Hope all is going well with our other pancreatitis dogs in this thread. -

I've been using Wagners MSM Joint Powder for the last 3 years for the dogs. It contains glucosamine and chondrointin. There was an obvious improvement in my old rescue Rottie who had bad arthritis and really bad hips. I now give a small daily dose as a preventive to my younger dogs who have no arthritis. It's a human formula and lasts a lot longer and is a lot cheaper than Joint Guard..which I used to give the dogs. For us it worked better than Joint Guard. -
Heartworm Injections, Affordable Vet?
cavNrott replied to daina's topic in Health / Nutrition / Grooming
When I discussed the heartworm injection with my vet some years back he advised against it. -
Thanks for the info Amanda. I have just placed an order for some NZ Colostrum Powder 100%. My girl has been fine since her acute pancreatitis attack and so I need to take measures to keep her well. I will also order Enzyplex so I have her covered from all angles.

My vet must have been aware of the need for Vit E if giving fish oil to the dogs. He told me about 9 years ago to alternate. I use Wild Salmon Oil one day and the next day a natural Vit E capsule. I never use the synthetic Vit E. -
My Cav girl has recently recovered from a bout of acute pancreatitis. Vet couldn't figure out what was wrong until we did a CBC. Then we knew what the problem was because her lipase level was high. Apart from me givng her more sardines in spring water than she usually has she didn't eat anything unusual. Could the sardines have brought it on? Are they an oily fish? I took her to the vet because she looked miserable, very quiet and she threw up her breakfast. Dana never throws up and is usually hyperactive. Vet gave her a shot for nausea and Cephalexin tablets for 5 days. She looked ok the next day but the following day she looked just as miserable so back to the vet for bloods and all was revealed. There was only the one vomit and no diarrhoea so we didn't have much to go on. I asked for xrays to make sure the state of the pancreas was ok. It looked healthy. She's fed raw but the vet said to feed her only Hills I/D for a month. This week I'm reintroducing raw mixed with cooked chicken breast and rice in the hope we can get her back on a raw diet. So far, so good.

It must be very difficult to find a pet friendly rental house. My son had an agent advertise his 3BR pet friendly house for rental last weekend. The house is close to the city and has recently been nicely renovated. It was open for inspection for 1/2 an hour but so many people came through it went on for more than an hour. The agent said a lot of applications were submitted and they've leased it to a couple with a large dog, after doing the background checks. This couple said they've been looking for almost a year but owners/agents were refusing them because of the big dog. My son took his Rottie for a walk while the inspection was on and came back to find the house with people still wandering around the house. He met the couple who've been approved by the agent, they were still at the house when he returned so they had a chat about the benefits of dog ownership. He's happy the agent chose these people and they're over the moon to be able to rent a clean, escape proof dog friendly house to rent. Evidently some people were offering a higher rental. Son was happy with the advertised rental and didn't accept any higher offers but it shows how difficult it is for people with big dogs. edited because I can't spell.

Yep, my vet does the FNA during a consult. The needle is quite fine and doesn't seem to bother the dogs at all. A biopsy needs a GA so if you have him xrayed the vet can take the biopsy at the same time. If she wants to give him a GA I wouldnt even bother with a FNA, I'd go straight for a biopsy. A biopsy is far more reliable because more cells are available for pathology. He's still a young chap. Faith was much older when she had the skin tags. From memory I think Chance was about 6yo when she came here and she had some huge ones on her ribs and on the belly. I had them taken off soon after she arrived here. They were all just benign skin tags.
-
So glad to hear the vet wasn't too concerned Shek. I've been thinking of you all afternoon. It brought back memories. I agree with Nekhbet I would do the FNA before going further at this stage. I wonder why the vet didn't do it when you were there today. When you get the results from pathology you can decide whether or not you should take it further and do the xrays. How old is Daegon now? Skin tags are pretty common in older Rotts. Faith had a few benign skin tags but I understand you'd be more comfortable knowking exactly what they are.

Ryan, that sleeping puppy shot is one of the most beautiful pics I've ever seen. I would be framing it and giving it pride of place in my house. Wish I had a pic like that of my gorgeous Rottie.
-
Please God no. No more osteosarcoma in our beautiful Rotts. What an evil disease it is. Shek I'm thinking of you :D :D and sending positive vibes to Daegon that it's nothing at all serious. I'll keep checking in for an update.

I voted other. Aloveen shampoo and conditioner here.

Lisa Chimes graduated from uni in 2006 so she doesn't have much experience behind her. She's evidently done courses in TV presentation plus acting and drama classes. If only they'd taught her to quit wobbling her head every time she's on camera. Chris Brown graduated with first class honors so if he's an idiot and/or a moron he's a damn smart one. What they don't show on Bondi Vet is that he visits remote aborignal communities treating and desexing dogs who have never seen a vet. Not sure if he still does this but according to my vet he made at least a couple of trips to treat the camp dogs. Oh, the irony of the nong who classifies a particular demographic that watch the show, but said nong appears to have closely watched every episode and can rattle off even the most minute detail of any episode. I watch it if I'm home and I like Bondi Vet but I sure as hell don't pay attention to every detail. It's just not that important that I won't blink in case I miss something.
-
That Chi was a horrible little beast. Shame on the owners for allowing their dog to get away with that behaviour. If it was a big dog carrying on like that no one would be blaming the vet. I agree with you JulesP. He gets it in the neck here because of his looks. If he was as ugly as a hatful the haters wouldn't be interested.

Where To Draw The Line With Vet Bills?
cavNrott replied to ~Myschafis~'s topic in General Dog Discussion
I wish I had thought of something clever like that to say when my Sophie girl was battling cancer. When I knew her quality of life would suffer if I kept her going I had her PTS. She still had quality of life but her cancer had clearly spread and my bottom line is always 'quality of life'. As it turned out someone pm'd me to offer condolences and said she was sorry some people were bitching behind my back. I was unaware of it but it didn't surprise me. I didn't need to ask who they were, I can guess who the few are who would stoop to that level. They were bitching because I kept Sophie going which I would not have done if she was not happy, playful and pain free. So now I say to those people - you know who you are and I'm fairly sure I do too. How much did you spend on your last self indulgence? Thanks Mum to Emma, you are so right. The love of an animal is with us forever. -
Are you dealing with a yeast or bacterial infection...or a combination of both? Either way I would have the vet anaesthetise the dog and flush out the ears, then you're starting with a clean slate.
